Can someone catch me up on Lost

I dont watch a lot of shows. Now I really like this one. I just started watching last week. I may go get the DVDs of the 1st season. Can anyone tell me anything I should know about the place the Australian guy was staying or the others? Can I jump in at this point and get the feel for the whole island story? I'm not real interested in the back stories of the characters. I like the show though. Thanks

You'll miss a lot of details that may or may not be worked with and would personally recommend you go pick up the DVD set.

While you could jump in at any point and pretty much figure out whats going on, it isn't nearly as cohesive as it should be. And if that doesn't work, at least try to track down the Lost: The Journey 1 hour recap episode.

2 guys found the hatch last season and were trying to open it, but were unsuccessful. At the end of last season (final episode) they opened it. Not sure where you started, but there are also numbers on the hatch that may have significance. Hurley (big guy) won the lottery playing those numbers after he heard some guy repeating them in a psyche ward... then he was struck with bad luck. I actually forget, but I think there was something about the French lady knowing about them too (she is a woman who has been trapped on the island for 16 years).

Other than that, nothing really has been revealed about the hatch... without speculating.

or the others?
Not a lot is known. Some on the island didn't believe they existed. Last season, a pregnant girl (claire) and the hobbit were kidnapped by some guy named Ethan. Some thought he was an "Other", and others thought he was just someone not accounted for on the flight (he wasn't on the flight manifest).

They escaped/were rescued and Ethan was shot dead by the hobbit. So no one could find out where he came from.

The French woman kept mentioning the Others, but he came off as crazy.

The "pirates" that kidnapped Walt (the boy) are assumed to be Others.

Tonights episode is the first real exposure to them (note, I haven't seen tonights episode yet).

I think it would be best. There is a lot of information. You're going to miss a lot of the "wow" factor not having seen a lot of the past episodes... The rest of us will be going "ohhhh.. that's it" and you won't have the same experience.

You'd best start with season 1 and then catch Season 2 in reruns over next summer.

Why not make arrangements to record Season 2? They're surely not going to air it all over the summer.

Obviously there will be a lot of web sites that are devoted to LOST that you can look at for information.

The current issue of CINEFANTASTIQUE has a Season One episode guide. I was looking at it at Borders last night

The back story of the characters is half of the show. Without that, you'd literally be 'Lost' on half the plot. Finding out all their bits of backstory every week, is one of the things that keeps the show interesting and unique.
