Rome - "An Owl in a Thornbush" - 9/11

Spoiler:
Scouting for Caesar some 30 miles from Rome, Pullo, Vorenus and some Ubian soldiers meet minimal resistance from a green group of Pompey recruits. Alarmed at the speed with which Caesar's army has advanced, and with a less-than-full complement of soldiers at his disposal, Pompey makes an unusual tactical decision: abandon Rome to Caesar, at least temporarily. The order forces patrician families to choose sides - while Servilia, Caesar's longtime lover, decides to stay in Rome, her son, Marcus Junius Brutus, flees the city with others faithful to Pompey. After seeing her family's fortunes fall and rise in the course of a few hours, Atia enlists her mercenary, Timon, to ensure her family's security. As Vorenus marvels that Rome has been left undefended, Pullo sees his uncanny good fortune continue after his unit intercepts a cargo wagon on the city's outskirts.

Saw it in advance with On Demand. A solid ep. that ends early stories and seems to set up the series for its official start next week.

the woman on the right...seems to have a little "Julie Cooper-Nichol" look to her in her eyes.

I hope so. The first two episodes have mostly been yawners (reminding me of Carnivale). I'll give it two or three more and if it is not better by then...I'm out.

Yup, I've heard that episode 4 is when it things really start happening. However, I've enjoyed episodes 1 & 2 quite a bit and am looking forward to tonight's.

Loved the first two episodes. There was enough intrigue to keep me coming back.

I'm glad to see things are picking up; I felt like I was watching "Days of our Lives" with togas the first 2 episodes.

I enjoyed the first two episodes so if it only picks up from here I should really enjoy this show. I wonder what Lucius will do when he finds out about his wife. Titus just cracks me up all the time. "Find the button."

I'm still trying to decide if Atia is hot or not. Sometimes I look at her and think she really is then other times, um, no.

Anyway, good solid episode. So Pullo is taking off by himself with the cute little wench girl and all the gold?

And when Vorenus nailed that statement on the door of the senate, why did the area look all seedy like it had been abandoned for 200 years? They were only gone for like a day.

A good episode, but it seemed like it ended too quickly.

most of the reviews have said that episode 4 is where it really kicks it up and gets moving. They shut down production after episode 3 to fix some problems and then come back from all accounts. I enjoyed last nights episode though - not as much as the previous 2 but it was good.

Why did the forum look all abandoned and rough - well it had been. The entire ruling class had left the city along with any control. What do you think would happen in a city today if all the government and infrustructure left? Plus I think they are going for a lived in look not a pretty prestine version of history like a lot of movies/shows put forth. I mean I can't stand watching gladiator and everyone has their perfect teeth and clean everything. I mean they didn't even have soap to wash with. To me Rome is showing it more how it would have actually looked.

I thought the exact same thing. Seemed really odd.

Oh, I don't know if anyone had mentioned this in the previous threads, but the making of that's aired on HBO a few times shows scenes from episodes that haven't aired yet. I was none too happy when I had it on last night.

Titus and Lucius are definitely the best parts of the show. I was laughing my ass off as Titus schooled Lucius on how to treat a woman.

I liked this episode too. It's a good show so far. That Niobe woman is unbelivably cute, I hope Lucius doesn't kill her when/if she reveals the true parentage of the baby.

The unintentionally funniest part of the episode is when Cato, the old man with the weak eye, croaks woefully, "You have lost ROME!"

My favorite unintentionally funny moment may have only been noticeable in HD. Brutus had a very obvious watch tanline on his arm. You could see it in his first scene. Maybe he had his wrist-sundial on while he was out in the sun earlier.

One of the previous articles I read said this show was suppose to be a 12 episode maxi-series. Guess that wasn't the case after all:

HBO has renewed its epic drama series ROME for a second season, it was announced today by Carolyn Strauss, president, HBO Entertainment. Production of the 12-episode second season will begin next March, with the debut set for 2007.

And a Sopranos-like wait between seasons too.

The huge gap between seasons will give the kid who plays Octavian time to grow a bit more.

to the renewal

Good news on the renewal, but I'm hoping this doesn't turn into another Soprano's with seasons appearing every couple years. It's too bad they can't stick to a normal yearly schedule.
