Nyah, it's not that bad - it's actually better when you can marathon them on dvd. I personally kinda lost interest after a few episodes while watching the 3rd season week to week (also, after missing 1-2 eps, I gave up on trying to catch up), but it was fine when I went through season 3 again on dvd.

Also, if the fifth season does get better, you might as well have the background to it all - stuff does happen during the 2 seasons.

That's what I'd say... there's a HUGE drop in quality of writing starting with Season 3.

Season 1 is very, very tight... each episode feels like a piece of a puzzle that fits just perfectly. Season 2 isn't quite as tight -- they played around with the premise a bit to shake things up -- but it is still excellent. And it ends with possibly the best cliffhanger I've ever seen in my life.

Then you get to Season 3 and there is an immediate sense that something isn't quite right. The characters don't feel right. The stories/motivations are sloppy. Things are introduced and then dropped. The whole thing went off the tracks from the start, and -- two years later -- it still hasn't recovered.

It isn't terrible television, but it's very disappointing when you consider how entertaining the first two years were.

I'd easily recommend S1-2 as a blind buy. I'd say rent S3-4 and make up your own mind, but I wouldn't bother dropping any $$$ on them.
