Soprano's question: Season 4

I've started watching Season 4 on HBO. I quit watching a little through season 3 and the only thing I'm not sure of is who this Gloria woman was who
Spoiler:
killed herself
.

What signafiance does she play and is there anything I need to know up to this point? FWIW the name of the episode I just watched was "Everybody Hurts"

Spoilers:

She was toney's guma (however you spell that) at the end of season three. He met her in Melfi's office. She got in a fight with Toney at her house, one night and threw a London Broil at him as he was leaving. This really pissed off Toney when he found out, and he beat the shit out of her, while she was begging him to kill her. And later made contact with Carmella, (because she works at their mercedes dealership). Toney got really pissed when he found out, and went down to the dealership, told her to stay out of his life and she threatened to kill herself.

She is in his dreams throughout season 4 and 5.

Thanks MrBob

I remember that episode where he beat the hell out of her I think. Was it behind a restaurant or behind some buildings? I sort of remember the steak throwing scene.

MrBob 07-11-05 05:28 PM

Crap I screwed up on that, he beat the hell out of her after the london broil and actually went down to the dealership and dumped her there after finding out about her and carmella.

There I edited the first post.

I thought he had one of his boys take a test drive and break up with her, while letting her know what exactly would occur if she made any further contact with any of the Sopranos.

That was Tracy, who was killed outside of the Bada Bing by Ralph Cifaretto. This enraged Tony, who likened Tracy to his own daughter.

Spoiler:
Of course, it took Pie-O-My's death resulting from Ralph's negligence for Tony to kill him, in Ralph's own kitchen no less.

Spoiler:
While we're on the subject, did Ralph offer to make Tony eggs before the fatal fight? It seems like whenever someone offers to make eggs, conflict or tragedy of some kind is near.

I believe it might have been Bobby Parisi (Philly Parisi's twin brother) who took her out for a drive.

I thought it was more than negligence. Didn't Ralph start the fire?

From what I remember, wasn't it 'implied' but not definitively answered? I thought they way they played it out was to leave you wondering if Ralph actually did it, or if he was just using it to ride Tony, since Tony was obviously so sensitive about it. It's been awhile, so I could easily be wrong.

Spoiler:
I must have remembered the chronology of Season Four incorrectly, as I forgot about the fire.

Anyway, I don't think the show would ever explicitly answer the question of whether the fire was an accident or not. It is similar to Season One, where we second-guess whether Livia was obliquely guiding Junior to killing his nephew [very fine work by Marchand in that episode that left Junior "holding the bag"]. We know, but we don't know at the same time.

I saw the episode last night with the aftermath of the fire.

Yes eggs were offered before the fight. As far as whether or not Ralph caused it. It was implied but never actually answered.

I always thought that it was an accident. But I think Tony's love of animals, hatred of Ralph, and most importantly...Tony's perception of Ralph's guilt due to Ralph's "It's just a horse and I've got more impotant things on my mind" attitude in the face of his son's recent injury is what led to the events in the episode.

I've noticed that sometimes people die in this show for reasons other than why they were supposed to. i.e. Richie Aprile

I noticed that Tony loved that horse. Does he have a love of animals in this series? I've never really paid attention and it's been awhile since I started watching the series again.

Well, remember the ducks in the pool in his backyard? He had a container with food for them next to his shed. I think that was either season 1 or 2.

Whether Ralphie did or did not burn down the stable was never established. But I've heard Joey Pants say that while he was playing the scene, he was playing it as if he did NOT do it.

Tony also
Spoiler:
gets pissed at Chris when he finds out that Chris sat on his girl's little dog while he was high on drugs

SFranke 08-02-05 12:06 PM

Spoiler:
In the Fifth Season, it is revealed Tony had a dog which his father had killed. Also, it is because of the "threat" of the bear that Tony returns to the house and thus begins to repair his marriage.
