When people mention Quantum Leap, I sincerely hope they are referring to the original, gentle version, and not the horrible 'marching band' style version used in later seasons.

Great one.
I've always liked the Charmed theme: Love Spit Love's cover of "How Soon is Now" originally performed/written by The Smiths.

I must be a freak because I never FF through any of the opening credits. I like the theme songs from Sopranos, Quantum Leap, Smallville, and Roswell just to name a few. It really disturbs me when a show changes its theme song all of a sudden, such as Dead Zone

Homicide's original opening is probably the most influential. The film Seven must have been inspired by it and, in turn, practically every show since (including the much lamer second version of the Homicide credits)
Rescue Me falls into that camp, and it's damn great.

Will try to throw some history into this thread. Many themes were memorable when I was growing up.
Hill Street Blues - just perfect for that show, sad and melancholy, like life on the hill.
St. Elsewhere - still see Dr Morrison running through the hallway when I think of this.
Perry Mason
Dragnet
Hawaii 5-O
Mission Impossible
Wild, Wild West
Star Trek - original - whooosh
NYPD Blue
I generally prefer themes without lyrics as you can tell.

Davis Rules (1991) only lasted 29 episodes (I barely remember the show) but I do remember it had a great theme by Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO fame.
A good runner up was the theme from the original Bill Cosby Show (1969-71) "Hikky Burr" written by Quincy Jones and Bill Cosby.

Ah come on people. Ya'll know One Day at a Time's lyrics and melody ruled!!! I'm startin' to dance just posting this.
ONE DAY AT A TIME!!!
This is it. This is it.
This is life, the one you get
So go and have a ball.
This is it. This is it
Straight ahead and rest assured
You can’t be sure at all.
So while you’re here enjoy the view
Keep on doing what you do
So hold on tight we'll muddle through
One day at a time, One day at a time.
So up on your feet. Up on your feet
Somewhere there’s music playing.
Don’t you worry none
We’ll just take it like it comes.
One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.
One day at a time, one day at a time.

My favorite Western Theme is "RAWHIDE".
Have Gun, Will Travel song is also good but is played during the closing credits.

The way I watch with DVDs is I'll sit through the theme for the first and last episode of the season, but that's generally it. The only one I sit the whole way through every single time is Firefly.
Other really great ones off the top of my head are Six Feet Under and Dilbert (even if it is the "Forbidden Zone").
