AFI:George Lucas

Not going to comment on the show, just wanted to say HOLY CRAP, Peter Jackson lost about 100 lbs, easy. The guys Lindsey Lohan thing (ok maybe not that bad). Can't believe thats him.

Anyone else see him?

Wallet Boy 06-20-05 09:10 PM

I know - that along with no glasses and he's reinvented his entire image. My wife said "oh look, Peter Jackson is talking" and I looked at her like she was blind. With no sound on and no voice to go by, there is no way I would have even believed that was him.

tommyp007 06-20-05 09:23 PM

Anyone else think Harrison Ford was drunk? I know he was hamming it up, but he still looked and sounded kinda sloshed.

Shilex 06-20-05 09:40 PM

He was probably dancing with Mary Jane ;) (as he's been known to do)

Terrell 06-20-05 10:24 PM

What I laughed at the most was Lucas saying that he is one ahead of Terrence Malick in getting the most praise for the least amount of work.

johnbook 06-20-05 10:36 PM

Of course not a word about "howard the duck" dammit george when will i get that damn dvd...

Terrell 06-20-05 10:46 PM

I know you're probably joking, but Lucas is not responsible for Howard the Duck. He didn't direct it, write it, or even produce it. He doesn't own it either. :)

You started a thread about a TV show about a different director that could have been covered HERE?????

Search. It's your friend.

He was the executive producer. Check IMDB for verification.

They forgot to mention Radioland Murders and Captain EO. I was really surpised they didn't mention Tucker: A Man and His Dream. I thought they showed a clip of it at the beginning.

Yes, I know. But he really wasnt' involved in the film. He's listed as Exec Producer for the reason I talked about.

Or Willow, aside from the morphing pic, or his companies. I assumed the AFI award was for everything in someone's career, not just directing. But they only concentrated on the films he directed, except for Indy.

Shit. Damn cold medicine. I missed this. :grumble:

Orbi-Wan Techno 06-22-05 08:53 AM

I DVR'd it. The William Shatner opening was pretty funny ("Star Wars? I can do Star Wars!"), but the Carrie Fisher rant was priceless. I haven't seen past hour one yet.

Actually...they mentioned it at the beginning and a widescreen clip of it was shown.

I recorded it on my DVD recorder...but it will also be shown again next weekend.

Wish USA were at least in stereo though. :(

Terrell 06-22-05 10:28 AM

Not one prequel actor was even there. Ford at one point genuinely seemed choked up when thanking Lucas for his career, and told him he loved him.

Fisher's rant was very funny, especially when she said "I hope it was you I slept with for the part, because if not, then who the hell was that guy."

I also thought Lucas's self-depracating humor at the end was pretty funny, when he remarked that he is now one ahead of Terrence Malick for receiving the most praise for the least amount of work.

Shatner also told Lucas to live long, you've prospered enough.

RichardW 06-22-05 11:29 AM

Shatner and Fisher were awesome. I haven't laughed that hard in awhile.

I have no idea if Peter Mahew was in the Chewie costume or if that was some other actor. I'm assuming C3-PO was just an actor and not Anthony Daniels.

Kal-El 06-22-05 12:36 PM

I actually think 3PO and R2 were just animatronics, like the one in Star Tours. My favorite part of the night was Fisher and Ford digging on the prequels. Carrie about how Amidala had a different costume everytime she walked thru a door, and which probably had a bra whereas she was told there were no underwears in space. And Ford going "during the earlier, funnier parts of the saga".

Terrell 06-22-05 01:15 PM

Jimmy Smits was in the house.
You are correct! I forgot about him. But I was surprised that he was the only one that was there.

RyoHazuki 06-22-05 02:39 PM

I like how Lucas said, when thanking Francis Ford Coppola, that he went from not being able to write a single word, to being the king of wooden dialouge.

RichardW 06-22-05 04:26 PM

I'm surprised they didn't do a short history of his other contributions, like ILM, THX and the fact that ILM created the technology that went on to become Pixar.

i was invited to attend the ceremony at the kodak theatre with a friend/co-worker of mine -- who is a big star wars nerd with "connections in cloud city". we sat at billy dee williams' table. his daughter is married to my friend. thus, the tickets. they covered a bit more than what was cut together for broadcast, including ILM, THX, Skywalker Sound, LucasArts, Avid, the Pixar spin-off, and Disney theme park attractions (which was news to me). at the reception afterwards, there was all kinds of talk about why ewan, natalie and hayden weren't there. it all sounded like typical hollywood gossip to me so i won't repeat the supposed reason. shook hands with harrison ford. hung out with billy dee most of the night. if anyone is wondering, he doesn't use the cane because he is a pimp, he recently had back surgery.
