The Contender 5/1/05

Just a friendly reminder that this is on again tonight. From the previews it looks like it's Joey vs. Manfredo.

astrochimp 05-01-05 07:33 PM

Yep Joey vs Peter,go Peter :D

Dabaomb 05-01-05 07:38 PM

Jesse dominated that competition. He was in first place pretty much every time except that time that Joey tackled him.

Dabaomb 05-01-05 07:44 PM

Manfredo completely outboxed Gilbert that round.

astrochimp 05-01-05 07:44 PM

Great 1st round for Manfredo :)

astrochimp 05-01-05 07:45 PM

2 rounds to 0 for Manfredo.

Dabaomb 05-01-05 07:46 PM

Manfredo is completely dominating Joey.

astrochimp 05-01-05 07:47 PM

round 3 to Joey.

Dabaomb 05-01-05 07:47 PM

Joey took it to Manfredo that round.

astrochimp 05-01-05 07:49 PM

Looks like its all even with 1 to go.

Dabaomb 05-01-05 07:49 PM

this is like the Ishe-Sergio fight when Ishe dominated the beginning of the fight and Sergio came back to take the fight.

Joey's sisters are hilarious...they're so into the fight

Dabaomb 05-01-05 07:52 PM

That's one nasty cut on Joey's face....it's the entire length of his eyebrow. Even if he won that fight, there's no way that he would've been able to continue.

Manfredo was winning round 5 anyway.

Despite losing, Joey showed a lot of heart in this fight.

astrochimp 05-01-05 07:55 PM

Joey dont look too good after that head butt. Was a close fight though :)

thelwig14 05-01-05 08:37 PM

Best show on televsion. Period.

Looks like that damn spoiler I received is going to be true. Bastards.

Patman 05-01-05 09:20 PM

It looked like Manfredo took a couple of rounds off, but luckily the headbutt didn't cost him the decision.

Josh H 05-01-05 09:39 PM

That was a brutal fight. Hated to see the headbutt, would have loved to have seen how the last 30 seconds or so of the final round would have played out.

Joey showed a lot of heart, coming back after those first two rounds and the rib injury.

devilshalo 05-01-05 11:10 PM

That was too bad about the headbutt. What a great fight, Manfredo almost giving it away towards the end. Dunno if he was tired from throwing all those punches in the first 2 rounds. I thought he'd key in on Gilbert's ribs going jab jab then inside, but he almost boxed like it was an amateur fight and eased up with the 2 round lead. How could he not go to the ribs when Gilbert was clearly favoring them? -ohbfrank-

Joeboo835 05-02-05 06:36 AM

It's too bad this next fight is completely irrelevant, since the winner has no chance vs. the 3 guys remaining. I think Tony would give a good effort, but he's injured, so I'm not sure how much he can actually do. Either way, neither of them have a chance.

Can't wait till the fight between Alfonso and Sergio, Alfonso and Peter or Peter and Sergio. Whichever 2 fight, that'll be a great match.

tbird2340 05-02-05 06:54 AM

Man do I love this show! This is the show I look forward to the most (except for Lost but the 5 week siesta's it takes makes it hard to look forward to a re-run).

Man did Joey show a TON of heart.. This fight with the ribs and the last fight with the leg. This kid really seems like a good guy. I was pulling for him. If he only had confidence in himself I think he would do A LOT better.

Oh well. I liked Manfredo too.

Man did the previews look good or what! I hope Jesse takes that clown down (altho I think he packs one HECKOFA punch!).

Timber 05-02-05 09:17 AM

I wasn't a fan of Manfredo when he got the gift re-entry but now he along with Sergio are the only 2 people that I'm pulling for. I can't stand either of the 2 that are fighting next week so I don't know who to root for.

No change to win against the three fights who made it into the final four ?? I wouldn't say that. Jesse beat Jonathan who was regarded as a really tough journeyman fighter. And Anthony has the only KO of the series thus far, when he gave Brent a royal ass -wompin. I wouldn't say either has NO SHOT against the others at all.

Next week they are making out like Jesse is winning and Anothony gets a huge late fight spurt. But they advertised something similar with Ahmed vs. Alfonso. My guess is that next week is a wash with Jesse getting an easy win.

Love this series though.

I'm in the same situation, but I think I'll root for #1 Daddy over Scholarly Jesse so I don't have to listen to him educate me on how "the lion from Wizard of Oz needs a heart" or how Ishe Smith is also a coward for backing down on his fight with Ahmed when he does the same exact same thing to Ishe in the second round. At least Joey admitted that he was playing the game.

Fok 05-02-05 02:39 PM

Awesome fight last night, its just going to keep getting better and better.

DRG 05-02-05 03:22 PM

I f'ing hate Jesse. He's just such an annoying shithead. I hate that he made such a huge deal about Ishe, Anthony, and now Joey sticking to their word, but he himself bailed on his word when it came to fighting Ishe and let Sergio take care of it. Plus blowing dirt in Joey's eye was cheap bullshit. I hope Anthony or whoever just knocks the bastard out cold.

To be fair, Joey was cheap and tackling him, holding him, etc. on the race preceeding that one. So he was just getting him back.

What goes around comes around.

I'm pulling for Jesse cuz I can't stand #1 Daddy. Jesse provides funny commentary plus he's the only one that acts like a jackass cuz he gets drunk all the time. So if nothing else, he provides comic relief.

Anthony "#1 Daddy" Bonsante on the other hand is complete scum to me. As I posted in the thread during his fight with Brent, I can't stand the guy. I wouldn't mind him backing out of the Jimmy Lange fight and fighting Brent if he didn't lie about it so much. He kept talking all this ish about how he was gonna pound Jimmy when he had absolutely no intention of fighting him. He lied to everyone there and he says that he's a role model for his kids. Yeah, lie to get ahead....great role model -rolleyes-

Although I agree with Jesse on everything you said, i think the challenge thing wasn't a big deal. They were both doing things like that. Hell, it was encouraged. No big deal.

But he has been complaining about other people the entire show. They have every right to do what they did. No one broke any rules.

Jesse has a better shot than Anthony.

#1 Daddy KO'd Brent but honestly Brent didn't deserve to be on the show. He was the biggest tomato can of the bunch. Almost any fighter there would've knocked him out.

Anthony fought Manfredo his last fight pre-Contender and got his butt wooped by him so if they fight again, I'm sure that the same thing would happen.

That is an awesome site. You could literally waste hours looking up fighters. On a side note, it is truly depressing seeing the duration of some of the fighters careers. Even though they get out of the limelight or HBO, they continue to fight in crappy places for little purses and continued brain damage.

yeah, thanks for posting that site in one of the earlier Contender threads

It really is sad looking at fighters never give up until it's too late. Most fighters retire with several losses in their last few fights (case in point, Evander Holyfield who still won't retire already).

thelwig14 05-02-05 11:13 PM

No problem. It is an excellent site to trump almost anyone in a boxing argument when they do not know what they are talking about. It is by far the most comprehensive boxing site. Also, check it out when you decide not to buy a pay per view because a non homer will give you immediate round by round coverage of fights. It has saved me a lot of money over the years for borderline quality fights.

TheGodfather 05-03-05 02:30 PM

Another great fight. I thought Joey was gonna lay down like a sucker and it looked that way after the 1st 2 rounds but something woke Joey up.

Interesting to see Jesse in Joey's corner. Jesse's got his tongue planted firmly in Peter's rectum I was surprised he wasn't in his corner. Did anyone notice who was in Peter's corner? Besides his "little league" father..."Don't give him no water!!!!"

I was really rooting for Joey to win the challenge and make Peter and Jesse fight. It seemed that Joey/Anthony was a more fair fight than Joey/Peter anyway. And it would've mirrored Jesse matching Sergio/Ishe.

Jesse makes me sick talking about trying to face a real fighter. No one planned and manipulated more than Jesse did. He plays the cocky, no fear role to the limit, but I think his facade is pretty transparent. He got tough with Ishe when there were plenty of guys around to step between them and make sure no one did anything stupid. Then he ducked him when he could have fought him. No one else feels like he's doing his best to duck Peter? I didn't like Jesse at the start, but for a minute he had me fooled. Now I just see him as a punk.

Josh H 05-03-05 08:20 PM

Jesse did call out Jonathon read though, who was one of the favorites going in, so he faced a real fighter his first fight.

I can't blame him for ducking Manfredo. The goal is too win. At least he didn't lie about it like Anthony did with Joey earlier.

TheGodfather 05-04-05 02:37 AM

It's not the ducking I blame him for. It's the posing. He has that "Holier than thou" thing going and he's as conniving as the rest of them, that's all I'm saying.

Original Desmond 05-04-05 05:49 PM

Great episode

Can Antony injured really beat Jesse ?

Post a spoiler i don't mind :)

Original Desmond 05-04-05 05:54 PM

Ok i've found the spoilers from another site

HERE we go, RESULT of Jesse v Antony

Spoiler:
Jesse Knocks Antony out cold!

mytzplyx 05-04-05 09:39 PM

Yah, i used to like Jesse until he punked out on Ishe. Ishe needed a few more seconds, maybe an extra round and Sergio would have been toast.

ANyways, how can anyone not like ALfonso. He's done nothing wrong but get beat up and win. Also, Peter Manfredo seems like a really cool guy. Sergio is Ok, but he seems to a be a little bit too cocky for my liking. #1 Daddy needs to be beat down. Jesse needs to be beat down too.

BassDude 05-05-05 03:38 PM

Finally got around to watching this off the DVR last night with my kids. Obviously our most anticipated show. (hard ta wait til our Wednesday Nites) Sad ta see Joey go, he was our favorite. We are guessing it'll be a Manfredo/Alfonso rematch in the final fight.

Previews made next week look good.. And I am pulling for Bosante. Jesse just lost me with the Ishe thing, and as mentioned above, his "hollier than thou" attitude.

Great stuff! Wish I coulda got tickets!
