wow. just wow. I have seen every episode and never once did it cross my mind that it is intended to be a documentary. The examples mentioned, I just figured were throwaway gags.

I don't think the show is meant to be a documentary, those are just little fourth wall gags, IMO.

I disagree. There have been too many "cameraman" jokes (like the "no cameras in the courtroom" bit.)

I agree. I don't think this is like The Office, despite the similar camera style. There aren't any one-on-one interviews, and while there may be an occasional humorous look into the camera, no one really seems to talk to the camera or anything.

Groucho 04-11-05 10:39 AM

The show is meant to be a documentary (don't believe me? just listen to the dvd commentary), but they don't take it as far as something like The Office in terms of realism.

one of the best episodes of anything I've ever seen.... I was laughing my ass off the entire time. And it is supposed to be a documentary about the bluth family, but not a traditional doc...basically, when it's convenient for comedy they use the presence of the crew (like tonight) and other times, they bend the rules to show us stuff that couldn't have possibly been gotten by a doc crew...but you know what? WHO CARES! The show is hysterical, and for my money, I don't care if they mess with the form to make something this funny and original.

I had no idea. I haven't sprung for the DVD set yet.

Outstanding episode in every regard. Absolutely hilarious.

Draven 04-11-05 11:21 AM

Maybe someone mentioned this and I didn't see it but was this the first time we found out Buster's real name is Byron?

I think so. I did a double take when they showed his pill bottle for hand pain (phantom).

I listened to the audio commentaries last week, I'm pretty sure they said they wanted it to be in the style of a documentary, but not meant to be an actual documentary.

Ahh, I thought it said 1 week ago, not 1 year ago...

Thanks for clarification. I was thinking maybe it was an intentional goof or something.

Yeah, I've read several Hurwitz interviews, etc. It's shot documentary style, and it's supposed to be as if there's a documentary crew there, but the characters never acknowledge it. Someone posted how the cast will look at the camera every once in a while, and that doesn't happen, actually. Hurwitz made it a point for them to never acknowledge that they're being filmed.

Fielding Mellish 04-11-05 12:51 PM

So... what the pluck was the whole "viewer advisory" thing about, then?
-confused-

Seemed like a pretty tame ep to me.

in the Pilot he's introduced as Byron "Buster" Bluth - Graduate Student.

I think they were playing a joke on us. the ep was only rated TV-14 DLS.

It actually had the hand in quotations.

Great episode. Especially drunken Buster singing the same "Mama" song that Lucille sang when she had the apartment all to herself.

Whew. Glad I'm not losing it. Just thinking about all the episodes, it just doesn't seem like a documentary at all. I'm chalking the bits with the camera up to cheap gags for an easy laugh.

Well, on page one I said and stand by:

At 8 p.m., CBS stayed in first with the 10.2/16 for "Cold Case." ABC moved up to second with the 7.7/12 for "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." NBC's "The Contender" was third with a 3.8/6, narrowly beating FOX's "The Simpsons" and "Arrested Development." The WB's new "Charmed" had a 2.5/4 for fifth.

majorjoe23 04-11-05 02:30 PM

"Narrowly beating," that's the kind of beating I can take!

uteotw 04-11-05 02:55 PM

The look Buster gave the auto-vacuum before he said "Have a great trip!" was priceless...

Geofferson 04-11-05 03:13 PM

At least it wasn't an ass-whooping. Narrowly beat by The Contender isn't too bad.

Deftones 04-11-05 03:46 PM

So much good stuff. Buster feeding cheetos to the roomba because it needed something to do was hilarious.
