Anything good on BBC America?

I was checking out the free On Demand stuff from my cable company and they had 4 episodes of coupling, and a few (6?) of Flying Circus. So I decided to check out the channel, looking at the guide all the way up until it said to be anounced there wasn't anything that caught my eye. Do they Coupling or The Office or anything else I should check out?

BDB 03-27-05 03:16 PM

I like manchild, its like sex and the city except with 40 year old guys

TheMadMonk 03-27-05 03:19 PM

Is Manchild even on BBCA anymore? I haven't seen it in ages. Just checked my Tivo guide; no upcoming episodes found.

Daniel-A 03-27-05 03:32 PM

Ah, just checked the website for the channel, looks like they only air the "new" episodes of coupling and the office.

GroundForce is good.

I don't know about their daytime schedule, but I know they rotate series in and out of their prime-time schedule - The Prisoner was on Fridays for a while until they finished the series and swapped in The Persuaders, and The Young Ones and The Thin Blue Line were on Thursdays for a while but seem to have been swapped out for Benny Hill and more Monty Python.

brookzy 03-27-05 04:20 PM

trailer park boys is pretty hilarious in my opinion

tasha99 03-27-05 04:21 PM

The only show I record off BBCA is Black Books.

They also often play eps of The Black Adder, The Thin Blue Line, and Coupling which are worth watching but I don't tape since I've seen them (not sure how often they play, but they show up now and then on my Tivo suggestions).

Daniel-A 03-27-05 04:28 PM

Yeah I was hoping it would be all good stuff in the day time, but it appears like the more popular shows get the primetime treatment, and the daytime is full of weakest link, some money finding show, random things that dont get watched.

Jadzia 03-27-05 04:31 PM

I really like Location, Location, Location, which is a British house-hunting show (much better than HGTV's House Hunters). I also really enjoy House Doctor, which is an American real estate expert who stages British homes for sale.

BDB 03-27-05 05:58 PM

oh the alan partridge is coming to BBCA in a few weeks...

I love this show.

Lampei 03-27-05 09:20 PM

I'm a big fan of Wire in the Blood. It reminds me a little of the older British drama, Cracker. It's a murder/mystery using a clinical psychologist. Not many episodes, but they're about 2 hours each, so it's like watching a movie each week. Not sure if it's on BBCAOD, but check it out if it is (or isn't :))

Super X 03-27-05 09:29 PM

I enjoy "At Home With the Braithwaites", when I can keep track of when they're showing it, that is.

Daniel-A 03-27-05 09:32 PM

I was looking at the DVD Sets for Coupling and The Office and noticed they were really cheap, so I look at the number of episodes and they are like 6-10 each. Are their seasons completely different from ours? We normally see 20+ from a show in a season. What's going on?

Lampei 03-27-05 10:10 PM

Yeah, most British TV seasons are very short (typically great for quality, but painful to have to wait so long for new episodes :D) Not sure of the complete reason for this, but this is what you'll generally find.

i tivo'd the office season 1, and I watched the first episode and really didnt think it was that funny. To be honest with you i laughed more while watching the american version then I did the british version. Maybe its because at parts i had trouble understanding what they were saying? Anyone else on the same page as me. Im going to give the rest of the episodes a whirl but man its not looking good.

One thing nice about "The Office" on DVD is that it included inserts that did some translating for you. So don't be a minge and pick up the DVD.

I was going to suggest Look Around You until I checked out their site and saw it's not scheduled at the moment. Give it a look next time they repeat it -- it's a short show (10 minutes per episode) parodying youth science shows of the late '70s/early '80s. Very laid-back humor (it's the type of show that will gladly spend a full minute or two setting up a joke) but if you don't like it you've only wasted ten minutes of your life. So you don't have much to lose. As for shows that are currently scheduled, I like Father Ted and Goodness Gracious Me. I also second BadlyDrawnBoy's recommendation of the Alan Partridge show (Knowing Me, Knowing You) -- there was a sitcom spinoff with the same character (I'm Alan Partridge) that I believe BBC America has shown in the past, but it's not nearly as good IMO.

Patman 03-28-05 07:45 AM

The pilot episode for the BBC's The Office isn't all that great, but the subsequent episodes are very good, so stick with it.

*Nothing* beats that Training Day episode.
To the poster who preferred the American pilot....I thouroughly disagree.
I watched the first BBC ep again this weekend and the understated performances were *In my opinion* much, much better than what we from Steve Carrell and company. I'm goign to stick with it, but it's not looking good on this end.

The second episode was much much better then the pilot. Im going to stick with it. I will look into the DVD if i enjoy the next few episodes. Season 2 is on this weekend =)

I try to catch the Thursday night comedy lineup when I can. It changes, but it's usually a pretty good night. Such shows as Python, The Young Ones, Trailer Park Boys, The Office, Manchild, and some others that I can't remember.

marty888 03-28-05 10:04 AM

Just finished watching the 4-part series <i>The Long Firm</i> last evening - excellent all the way. My big problem with BBCAmerica is the absurd number of commerical interruption, which are usually done in the most annoying way possible: simply a hard edit from show to commerical.

On April 2 they are doing an <i>Office</i> marathon for the 2nd season episodes.

You can always check their schedules on their website:

Unless I'm wrong, it doesn't look like BBC America shows any of the music specials or programmes that the BBC is famous for

notably: Top of the Pops

question: did BBC America show any of the BBC's 2004 coverage of the annual Glastonbury Music Festival?
