Poll: current Smallville season better than Angel Season 5?

Which is a better show, angel or smallville? I'm biased - I think Angel was way way better.

phr33k 03-03-05 02:06 AM

Fuck no.

That's not bias. I'm pretty sure it's a scientifically provable fact.

I like "Smallville" and never miss an episode, but it's nowhere near the level of quality of "Angel."

Jackskeleton 03-03-05 04:26 AM

Apples and Oranges.

Count Dooku 03-03-05 04:40 AM

Apples are way way better than shitty ass oranges.

Chew 03-03-05 05:58 AM

The current season of Smallville isn't even as good as the worst Buffy one.

B.A. 03-03-05 07:07 AM

I only watched the last year and a half of Angel, so I don't know how good the earlier seasons were, but the last season of Angel was pretty good. Compared to this season of Smallville, it was great.

Jeraden 03-03-05 07:55 AM

Yeah, this season of Smallville is pretty weak. The whole Lana subplot is so stupid and really detracts from the show. Getting rid of that and making her have some relevance to the rest of the show would help out tremendously.

das Monkey 03-03-05 08:00 AM

Wow. Why would anyone compare these two? I've been pretty critical of the flaws in <i>Angel</i>'s 5th season, but it's still not even close.

das

Red Dog 03-03-05 08:42 AM

I've only seen Angel S1, and I think I can safely say that Angel S5 has to be better. ;)

Amel 03-03-05 09:40 AM

I enjoy watching Smallville most of the time. It's been tough this season to watch them all. They're just not that good. So I skip some and only watch parts of others. I only missed one episode of Angel ever. And that's because my local tv station showed it at a different time than what they advertised. The worse season of Angel is still miles above any season of Smallville.

Timber 03-03-05 10:03 AM

I just saw the last 2 episodes of Angel (since they originaly aired) on TNT last week and damn were they good. I need to go open the set and watch the whole season. I remember it feeling uneven when it was on but the worst seson 5 episode of Angel is better then any Smallville episode that has been on this season.

mookiemeister 03-03-05 10:06 AM

I haven't missed an episode of Smallville this season. That's something I couldn't say about Angel season 5.

Rogue588 03-03-05 02:17 PM

Interesting that the three that voted for Smallville just think it was "better" than Angel and not "way way better". I think that says something about Smallville.

Not that i'm trashing it, since I think this season's MUCH better than last. Not that that's saying a lot.

Still...NEITHER of these seasons have anything on Golden Girls' 7th season. Betta RECOGNIZE, bitches.

My thoughts exactly. Not easily compared because they are so different, but if forced to choose there is no debate for me - Angel is far superior imo.

Angel is above and beyond anything else on the WB.

I'm not even a fan of Angel (and I'm a fan of Smallville) and even I know Angel was the better show. Comparing Season 5 of Angel to the current season of Smallville is even more lopsided, since this is easily the worse season of Smallville.

Doughboy 03-04-05 12:53 PM

Well in fairness, Season 4 of Smallville has 6 more episodes to go. But something major better go down in those remaining shows to even have a snowball's chance in hell of topping Angel Season 5.

And I didn't even like Angel Season 5 that much.

Jadzia 03-04-05 01:08 PM

I finally pulled the plug on this season of Smallville, and cancelled my season pass. I think it was the dog episode. I just realized that I could have 42 minutes of my life back every week if I just stopped watching this drivel.

I never gave up on Angel Season 5, I even enjoyed most of it.

This thread begs some serious questions:

Why not compare season 4 of Smallville to season 4 of Angel, which was just complete Shite? Is "evil" Lana any worse than "evil" Cordy? Could Jasmine have been any more retarded? Could Conner have been any more obnoxious?

Sure, Angel season 5 was better, but I assume Lex will finally go completely bad in Smallville season 5, and then all bets are off.

I re-read that line a few times and i'm still not sure what you're getting at there. What does that say about Smallville?

As for me, i never got into Angel so i voted Smallville as better.

Ok, let's compare the respective Season 4's. Angel Season 4 had a major storyarc that encompassed nearly every episode. Whether or not you liked that arc is another matter, but at least there was one. Smallville Season 4 is about 3/4 of the way through and the only arc I can detect is Lana's which is universally hated by the viewers.

Angel Season 4 actually dealt with the massive cliffhanger ending to Season 3. Cordy's "ascension" caused her to return possessed and eventually led to her death. Again, you may have hated that storyline, but at least there were consequences from those events. As far as I can tell, Smallville Season 4 pretty much rebooted every major cliffhanger from the end of Season 3. Which is par for the course for this show.

Angel Season 4 had kickass fight sequences in almost all the episodes. Smallville Season 4.....well, if you enjoy seeing Lana flying around a room suspended by invisible wires, more power to ya.

With the exception of Lorne, every cast member in Angel Season 4 had a purpose in the overall arc. Angel becoming Angelus and then trying to save his son, Cordy being possessed, Connor being manipulated by Cordy/Jasmine, Wesley and Lilah, Fred with her tumultous relationship with Gunn and then being the only person in L.A. who knows the truth about Jasmine, even Faith's mini-arc got closure(which is more than I can say about her return to Sunnydale).

Smallville's cast this season? Have the Kents had any purpose thus far? What's Chloe doing aside from taunting Clark with the knowledge of his secret? Lois is a welcome addition to the cast, but she's being wasted. Lex seemed to be going dark before the last couple of episodes when the writers reset his character back to Season 1 form. Lionel isn't even around half the time, and when he is, he's doing nothing. Hell, his liver disease storyline which could've been a great redemption arc was killed. Clark....well, he's Clark. He's always gonna be the bland boy scout, so that's fine. Lana and Jason? Please God, put me out of my misery.

Sorry, but there is no comparison between Smallville Season 4 and any season of Angel. This show either needs to start going somewhere or end already. Seriously, look back at the nearly 4 years of episodes in this series and tell me what major developments have taken place plotwise or characterwise. Anything substantial either had no lasting effect or was reset as if it never happened.

chess 03-04-05 05:07 PM

I found none of the arcs you mention in Angel S4 even remotely appealing. Faith and Wes were probably the only redeeming things in the whole season. It's just a good thing they traded Conner in for Spike in the final season or it would have been a complete loss.

Similarly, Smallville S4 has been worthless...for the reasons you describe and others. Lex needs to go bad, in a big way, and soon...because if that dude's mom is the big bad this season, I may just tune out completely.

The only thing we disagree about here is the relative worth of Angel S4, which I loathed...along with most of S3.

Wow. I thought Angel season 3 was a masterpiece. I also like Angel S4, even if it might be the worst Angel season. As for Smallville, i loved the show during Seasons 1 and 2. I still watch it but this season has been dreadful. As far as im concerned, decent FOTW episodes are a 100 times better than a horrible arc.

riley_dude 03-04-05 06:14 PM

Smallville is a mess this season. Angel season 5 started out bad but picked itself up, started a story arc and took off!!
