Gastineau Girls-who will admit they watch the show?
 

I admit to watching the show. It's so bad it's almost good to see how these pampered, spoiled women live the high life in NYC.

Two women who know how to campaign for women's lib errrr, know how to use men to get what they want. Jewelry, cash, etc.

Mother/daughter combo-they are very good looking. Boy is the daughter clueless. She had better hope to find a man with money to get her through life. I'm sure she will.

E! Gets Personal with 'Gastineau Girls'

Like mother, like daughter ... or pretty much in the case of Lisa and Brittny Gastineau.

The socialite ex-wife and novice fashion-model daughter of former New York Jets football star Mark Gastineau are looking for love. They do so in many of the same places in "Gastineau Girls," an unscripted E! Entertainment Television series airing Tuesdays.

As with other reality-show families such as the Osbournes and the Gottis, it's not all sweetness and light as Brittny tries to step out of the shadow of her colorful mom, who strives to be understanding while remaining her own person.

Already deemed by some to be a merger of "Gilmore Girls" and "Sex and the City," "Gastineau Girls" gives the New York-based women equal time.
Zap2it: Did you find it took a while for the male crew members to adjust to so much candid "girl talk"?

Lisa: There are so many issues they have to deal with, other than things they might have been used to on previous shows. With two female subjects, it's like a henhouse. We can get PMS at the same time, and when that happens, I'm sure they just want to clear the area and go somewhere else.

To us, it's like they're not even there. It's amazing. We have these hunky guys, and somehow you learn to believe they're not even around. You pay no mind to them and just continue your life.

Brittny: We have, like, the best crew. They just hide, and we just live our everyday life. We don't even realize the cameras are there. It's really funny that we talk about all these girl things and the crew has gotten so used to it.

Zap2it: Did any other reality shows give you an idea of what you might be in for?

Lisa: The only one I'd ever seen was "The Osbournes," and I fell in love with the family. This one is also about a family, a mother-daughter relationship like no other. It's a special, unbreakable bond that is tested time and time again. As much as people might see us traveling or shopping together, that's not what it's about.

Of course, we love all those things ... but if it came down to that or just being able to be with each other, and sharing the love we feel for each other and for my parents, there's nothing else that touches that.

Brittny: Sometimes I'll watch "Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica" or "The Osbournes," but I really don't watch very much TV.

Zap2it: Do you have trepidation about having your arguments televised?

Lisa: Yeah. You have to really love someone not to murder them. What you see in the show is only a little piece of it. At one point, Brittny had borrowed my car to go downtown to the meatpacking district and pick up a dress from a designer to go to a red-carpet event. When she came out of the designer's, my car was missing.

She didn't want to come home that night and tell me, but she figured she'd come in and out, and I wouldn't catch on to what was going on until the next day -- but she dropped the news on me. The car was towed because there were some unpaid parking tickets I was completely unaware of, and we spent the whole next day bailing it out. Brittny figured if you threw away the ticket, it counted as not having gotten one.

Brittny: I don't think it's hit me yet.

Zap2it: Do you worry that some of what happens to you is so unbelievable, viewers may think it must be scripted?

Lisa: This is our life. We actually look at the footage and say to each other, "People will think this isn't so." Anyone who knows us can't believe the day-to-day drama we have. I long for the day when we have some peace and tranquility, and we're working toward that. I think that's kind of what the show is about, Brittny becoming her own person and not needing complete mothering ... and me being able to give up on mothering so much. It's about two strong personalities with two definite visions.

Brittny: It's all real. When I have a problem with her, I have no problem saying it, and it's the same with her. The show captures all our real moments.

Zap2it: Any concern about what Mark Gastineau might think of the show?

Lisa: That was so "last year," plus, plus, plus. I only wish him well, but he's not a part of my life. I couldn't imagine him being a part of it now.

Brittny: He has never been a part of my life.

Zap2it: What is your ultimate aim for the show?

Lisa: Hopefully, people will come away with an understanding of who the Gastineau girls are. We're a loving mother and daughter with a bond that is so atypical ... it's not hugging and kissing all the time.

Brittny: People have an image of how mothers and daughters should act. My mom is my best friend, but when I get out of line, she steps into that mother role. I just hope viewers can see, and appreciate, that a mom can be cool and a mom at the same time.

E! Entertainment Television hypes its newest pseudo-celeb reality docudrama as ``Gilmore Girls'' meets ``Sex and the City.''

Don't get your hopes up.

The ``Gastineau Girls'' arrives tonight (at 10on E!) without the witty banter and sexual situations that marked the show's supposed predecessors, although mother and daughter Gastineau attempt to make up for that oversight with lots and lots of cleavage.

The advance copy of the premiere did not have an audio feed. That might not be a bad way to watch the show.



Instead, see daughter Brittny (Did she loan her ``e'' to E!?) put through rigorous workouts in her bid to take the modeling world by storm. See Brittny and mom Lisa get melodramatic in the car. See them get melodramatic in their glamorous New York City apartment. See Lisa carry the requisite celebrity chihuahua. See Lisa and Brittny pose nude. See them shop for jewelry. See them pose nude again.

Brittny is gorgeous. She lovingly describes her mom as ``a MILF'' (trust us, an unsuitable-for-publication acronym).

But who are they, and why are we supposed to care enough to watch them weekly?Lisa is the ex-wife of former New York Jets star Mark Gastineau, and Brittny is their 22-year-old daughter. They both hope to further their modeling careers. What better way to do that than to sign up for their own reality show?

After all, it almost runs in the family.

To wit:

After Lisa and Mark separated, Lisa was involved with the late John Gotti, whose daughter and grandsons star in the A & E show ``Growing Up Gotti.''

For his part, Mark was engaged to and had a son with Brigitte Nielsen, who starred this past year in two VH1 shows, ``The Surreal Life'' and ``Strange Love.''

One of Nielsen's other flames, ex-husband Sylvester Stallone, will return to TV March 7 with his NBC boxing competition, ``The Contender.''

E! apparently bought into this lineage.

Or perhaps the entertainment network remembered MTV's short-lived ``Rich Girls,'' a look at the daughter of Tommy Hilfiger and her friend,and thought, ``Hey, why don't we find our own rich girls, only make sure they're older, sexier and more glamorous?''

E! calls the Gastineaus ``celebutantes.''

Mom and daughter play into this worldview with quotes such as these from the network promos:

``I don't think I need to be rich, but I think it makes life a whole lot easier,'' says Brittny.

``Everything with me is drama,'' says Lisa.

In the end, the Gastineaus likely will get more drama and stardom than they ever had before, exactly as they had wished.

Tonight at 10 on E!

CALL it "Six Degrees of Blonde Reality TV."

But the latest train wreck of a reality show, "Gastineau Girls," which premieres tonight on E!, is, oddly enough, connected to all the other train-wreck reality shows featuring blond women who also have a lotta dough and boring lives.

Right outta the box, the announcer (a fake doorman named Lou, who is actually actor Lou Martini — don't ask) says that the glamorous Lisa Gastineau, ex-wife of Mark Gastineau, has been hooked up with men like "Sylvester Stallone and John Gotti."

Meantime, Mark Gastineau and Sylvester Stallone were also "hooked up" to big, blond reality-star No. 1, Brigitte Nielsen. And John Gotti was the father of blond reality-star No. 2, Victoria Gotti.

Small world.



Now comes "Gastineau Girls" — a horrifyingly riveting show about Lisa Gastineau and daughter Brittny (no "a").

I always wonder what the producers of shows like these are looking for: The glamour of life in New York? The open-mouthed pleasure of seeing how the inexplicably lucky live? Shopping advice?


No matter, Lou the doorman is there to remind us constantly that what we're seeing is all very exciting — and that Lisa is young! And beautiful!

As the show opens, Brittny is just back from college, which she has quit so she can model.

She begins by posing for one of those laddie mags that used to be called girlie mags.

Brittny explains that Mom got rich by making "wise investments."

If she got so rich that she has a personal jeweler and horrifying balloon drapes, but never had a job, the woman's the King Solomon of selling short.

Lisa says the family fortune is actually a combination of wise investing and — wink, wink — a few "Sir Lancelots."

I suspect more for the cameras than for the sake of family finances, Lisa heads off in the first episode to see a headhunter. She tells him she's never worked, although her bio does mention she worked "as an on-air personality for Fox's 'Good Day New York.' " (It doesn't mention that it was in 1988.)

In between job-hunting scenes, they keep showing us a photo session with Mom sitting behind Brittny and straddling her with her legs. And they both look nude. Yikes! Yuck!

But hey, it happens. I've personally sat with my own daughter like that many times. Of course we were on Space Mountain at Disney World, and we were both fully dressed. But still . . .

LG confesses that she felt so guilty when she divorced Mark Gastineau that she over-indulged Brittny because she "didn't have a father." (Has anyone bothered to tell Mark Gastineau that he's dead? )

Apparently that over-indulgence didn't include living together because the narrator tells us that Brittny went to live with her grandparents after the divorce. Lou the fake doorman says, "They're living together for the first time!"

Excuse me? Brittny's 22 years old! Now I get what this is all about — "The Gilmore Girls" without the witty dialogue.

As far as I can tell, Lisa and Brittny shop for a living and go to lunch with women who look like rich, scary victims of plastic surgery.

If you like the other blonde reality shows, you'll love this one — even if there's no Flava Flav to save them from themselves.

I was about to post about this show, I saw the first episode. The daughter is smokin', she's really good looking. I don't think the mom is that good looking, she has that typical, clinging to her youth look to her, but the daughter is hot. I'm curious how her tenure at the Univeristy of Alabama was, she seems very suited to the city life. Oh...and she's hot. That's pretty much all I have to say about the show.

Mark Gastineau has a 22-year old daughter? Now I feel old. She is a hottie.

The latest show they visited Palm Beach and Miami Beach. They manage to find a young guy with money that has clothes and party connections. They outfit the ladies for free and party on. He's not their type but they appreciate his help.

Seriously though, I don't watch the show and wouldn't have a problem with admitting if I did. I do, however, enjoy reading the thrashing it's been getting in the NY newspapers.

I am petitioning all DVDTAlk members to equate NYers with Tom from Survivor and NOT these girls....

I saw the show advertised and I thought to myself, "What, are they related to Mark Gastineau or something? Nah, who'd want to watch something like that...?"

I guess I overestimated people yet again. -ohbfrank-

I don't know if I hate the girls on My Super Sweet 16 or the Gastineau girls more. Rich, spoiled, self centered, bubble living, whiny, plastic ****s. Sorry for the c word. It should come out for special people like the Gastineau girls.

My fiancee watches just about any reality show, so I've seen several episodes of this show.

As reality shows go, it's not too bad. I prefer it to a significantly number of other shows my fiancee likes to watch. But it is further proof that, not only do I not understand pop culture, but also that reality television hates women.

This year they are incorporating quite a bit of the behind the scenes parts-showing camera/sound people and the bits where the "girls" ask the crew questions.


Plus the bit in Miami where they interview the producer after the Mom got pissed and went off on her. "I knew that eventually my time would come for a blowup from her" or something like that. Then later the director quits the show after the Mom asks for some time without cameras rolling at a dinner. Of course she gets him back.

They got rid of the doorman/narrator, too, right? Or have I just tuned him out?

I think the mom is 1 or 2 surgeries away from looking like Tabitha Stevens.
