Who has it and is it worth it? I have some friends that live out of town and are looking into getting it. I don't know squat about it so I thought I'd ask here.

Ok I saw that link but I still see commercials here.

I advised against it since they can get HD service through Cox where they live. They don't watch a ton of TV but like the HD feature.

I've had voom for a year and can't speak highly enough about them. It is a shame they are going under. The service is great. The only downside, IMO is the per room fee. Something like $15 each. ouch.

I've done some reading and research on other boards and people are still signing up in hopes they abandon all of their equipment when they finally decide to shut it down. Meaning a free OTA tuner and antenna. :up:

As for the service, the HD channels are crystal clear and, IMO is well worth it for the price. You get way more bang for your buck vs. the cable co. or other dish companies.

I've also read on other forums users that (have too much money/time on their hands) have more than one HD service with Voom, just for comparison's sake. They all swear up and down their is a night and day difference between the voom signal and the HD signal from the cable company. I can see that, since pre-existing cable lines have a bandwidth limit a lot lower than a satellite does. They also claim it is sharper than both Dish and DirecTV.

I'm soooo tempted after seeing their list of HD channels.

I guess what I'd be losing is Comcast Sportsnet which means losing the local sports. What a quandry.

I'm thinking about it but only because my cable company can't supply the area I live in with HD yet. If my cable company could supply it to me, there would be NO QUESTION I'd stick with cable. Their lineup of HD channels is very good and for a nominal fee.

Cable is so much more convenient if you ask me. For one, you don' have issues about your signal going out when it rains or snows. Second, I have the cable enter my house the basement and then I have a direct run from each room to a massive splitter. If I went with satellite, I'd have to ditch this whole setup. With my current setup, I can plug a TV into any jack in my house and watch TV.

If I were to get Voom, it would be to supplement cable. Since DirecTV only has like 5 HD channels, thats out.

I would love to switch to VOOM, but they require a phone line, which I no longer have, since I only have a cell phone now. :(

this is a HUGE factor for me. My cable company offers the HD version of Comcast Sportsnet.

YOU DO NOT NEED A PHONE LINE. The customer rep is wrong. I didn't have one to get mine working. The installer simply called and set it up that way.

They just dropped the per room fee to $5 vs. the $14.50 they were charging. This should help bolster some sales.

The owner of voom is using his own pocketbook to keep Voom afloat. How long that lasts is anyone's guess, but he is determined to make it work.

Hop on board people. The best and the cheapest all in one.

well, maybe your installer didn't know it was required? Based on what VOOM told me, you may be missing out on some future features. But I think the "security" reason is the main reason they want you to have a phone line:

VOOM requires you to connect your VOOM equipment to an active traditional home phone. The home phone line connection allows for impulse pay-per-view usage (when it becomes available), as well as future interactive features. In addition, the phone line provides security for us so we know each receiver is at the location on the account.

Well obviously it isn't required otherwise I wouldn't have service. Simple as that. They prefer you to have one, but it is not necessary. I've had my service for a year and not once has it been hooked to a phone line... until yesterday when...

I read that you can pick up caller id on the tv screen when connected to the phone line though.

So I thought I would hook it up and try it out.

Michael is correct, it is not required. If you don't have a hard line at your house just give them your cell phone #. That is what I did. They don't care. They only want your phone line if you plan to use pay-per-view.

As Michael mentioned about the caller I.D. feature, this is the only other thing that the phone could be used for. They do not update your satellite box thru the phone, that is done thru the satellite directly.

Go ahead and order Voom. If you have an HDTV, there is no reason to wait. I have had Voom since August of last year and have loved every minute of it. I don't see why HD lovers are staying with Direct and their Cable services when Voom is head shoulders over EVERYONE out there in regards to HD. Over 35 HD channels! Where else can you get that. My only major complain with Voom is the local channels problems. In my opinions they should just air the locals like Direct or Dish does. Dealing with the antenna can be a big pain in the ass for your locals. Everytime I talk to them they said that they are working on the locals problems but can never give me a date. If they would just give an HD/Standard feed from a large market NBC, FOX, ABC, CBS, etc. I would have not one complaint.

Voom has always had an uncertain future; right now, in fact, the CEO of Cablevision is trying to save Voom by investing 400mm of his own money into the company, endangering Cablevision in order to do that (it's started a family fued between Dolan and his son).

I'll never understand it either. I have read reviews on other forums as well, people that have pocketbooks big enough to have mutiple services and it is regarded that cable and the other two dish companies don't have the bandwidth capable of the quality image Voom provides(for now anyway). Not sure about the dish companies, but I can see that with the cable company. They(that have compared multiple services at the same time) swear up and down that Voom provides a better image plain and simple.

I haven't had a lick of trouble with my antenna for locals. But have have zero trees in my line of sight from the dish/antenna.

I say give it a shot over the summer months when most programming is in reruns, that way if you are disappointed you aren't missing much and can switch back come fall(at least I think, I didn't have a commitment when I signed up).

Well, that was a good experiment that didn't last long. I just wish DirecTV would get that new bird up in the air and start providing us with enough national HD channels to make it worth my $12 extra every month.

Does this mean they could have some customers who signed up and will only end up with a single months bill? :lol:

Well here's hoping they don't come a knocking for equipment since the Antenna for locals should work.
