Rank these HBO shows

I was hoping people who have seen the shows could do a rank for me, in terms of which of these has the most bad language. I have not seen all, so please let me know.

Please rank the shows in order from 1(Most language of the HBO shows) to 5(the least of the shows)

1). Deadwood
2) Carnivale
3) Sex and the City
4) The Sopranos
5) Six Feet Under
6) The Wire

Thanks!!!

Dr_Evil 02-19-05 06:27 PM

I haven't seen complete seasons of Deadwood or Six Feet Under, but base on what I saw I would rank them as:
1) Deadwood
2) The Sopranos
3) Sex and the City
4) Six Feet Under
5) Carnivale

I would say there is a pretty big line from the top 3 and the bottom 2. The first 3, bad language flows fairly often, you don't go more than a couple of minutes without hearing at least one or two curse words. The bottom two, the swearing seems to be less frequent, and because of this I notice it more in those shows.

Decker 02-19-05 07:07 PM

1 :Sopranos
2: Six Feet Under
3: Sex And The City
4: Deadwood

----------
5: Carnivale

.. And don't forget about The Wire, either.

Smidget 02-19-05 07:44 PM

1. Sopranos
2. Six Feet Under
3. Deadwood
4. Carnivale

I tried to watch Sex and the City...and I just couldn't do it. Bought season 1 and everything...and just couldn't, wasn't for me so I'm not ranking it.

nazz 02-19-05 07:45 PM

1) The Sopranos
2) Deadwood
3) Six Feet Under
4) Sex and the City
5) Carnivale

Ttiberius 02-19-05 07:57 PM

1) Deadwood *****

2) The Sopranos****
3) Carnivale ***
4) Six Feet Under ***
5) Sex and the City **

Bill Needle 02-19-05 08:28 PM

As for quality:

Love it:
1) The Sopranos

Probably would love it, but haven't been able to watch enough to bump up:
2) Deadwood

Didn't care:
3) Carnivale
4) Six Feet Under

Ninth circle of hell:
5) Sex in the City

As for language? It's HBO. Expect the worst.

Shannon Nutt 02-19-05 08:58 PM

The Sopranos
Deadwood (Could surpass Sopranos if the quality stays the same in future seasons)
Carnivale
Six Feet Under
Sex and the City

Josh-da-man 02-20-05 11:13 AM

1) CARNIVALE - rules them all. Best thing HBO has ever done.

2) DEADWOOD - harder for me to get into than Carnivale. Still pretty good.

3) SOPRANOS - crawled up its own ass after the second season. Pretty much coasting along on its own fumes for the past three seasons.

4) SEX AND THE CITY - Annoying water cooler show, though occasionally funny and dirty. But often it's more about who's wearing what designer clothes and shoes.

5) SIX FEET UNDER - No opinion, other than a dark, sardonic dramedy about a gay undertaker doesn't have much appeal for me.

Dalvin 02-20-05 11:36 AM

Thanks Josh, now can you rank them according to what the original post said?

The cops language is actually worse then the drug dealers in S1. There's a great scene in S1 with McNulty and Bunk at a murder scene that is really bad in terms of language, but hilarious.

tasha99 02-20-05 03:19 PM

The numbers are for a ranking of language, the stars are for how much I liked them:

1. Deadwood *****
2. Sopranos ***
3. Sex and the City ***
4. Six Feet Under ****
5. Carnivale *****

Also, Josh--I think you should give 6 Feet Under another chance. Your comment about it being about a gay undertaker makes me think you might not have watched it since he's one of many family members. Maybe it's more of an ensemble show now, but I always considered Nate (Peter Krause) to be the main character.

WOW!!!!!! Deadwood has more language than Sopranos....that just is shocking to me. Every other word out of Tony's mouth was Fuck. How can they beat that?
I definetly want to pick up Carnivale. I think it will be my next Box Set to get.
"Sex and the City" didn't bother me, because it was all in fun. The language was humerous, and not mean spirited for the most part.
Does "The Wire" have as much bad language as "The Shield" or worse?

flashburn 02-20-05 06:40 PM

Only Dalvin could create a thread that he wants people to rate tv shows not on quality, but on language. Amazing.

Well I havent seen enough Sopranos to truly compare the two but ever other word out of Al's mouth on Deadwood was C0CKSUCKER!. He really turned it into an artform.

Sir, this is called threadcrapping. If you don't want to intellectually participate in the discussion at hand, than I suggest you find another topic to post in. Thank You!

The Wire drops some f-bombs.

The Shield is on network TV.

Someone steals DVDs from your father or something....

It's kind of a hard thing to actually quantify.

Deadwood and The Sopranos probably have the highest amount of swearwords because they're tossed around a lot in casual conversation. Deadwood probably edges out Sopranos in that regard.

Sex and the City, from what I recall, had a fair amount of swearing, but also a lot of sexual discussion that could get pretty coarse.

Carnivale probably has the least amount of profanity of the four series I'm familiar with, but it definitely has its moments, and the context that some of the discussions take can be rather eye-opening.

Osiris 02-20-05 11:25 PM

Sopranos
Six Feet Under
Sex In the City
Carnivale
Deadwood
The Wire

That's an understatement. During the first season there was an entire scene where the only word spoken was "Fuck". "Fuck, Fuckin'-A, Fuckity fuck" for about 5 minutes. I wish I had a transcript.

The rest of the episodes were a bit less profane.

Meteu185 02-21-05 02:09 PM

Ahhhh, Deadwood - I can't wait till March 6th:

Ellsworth: I may have fucked up my life flatter'n hammered shit, but I stand here before you today beholden to no human ********er, and holdin' a workin' fuckin' gold claim, and not the U.S. government tellin' me I'm trespassin', or the savage fuckin' red man or any of these other limber-dick ********ers passin' themselves off as prospectors had better try and stop me.
----------------------------------------
Ellsworth: Well'm, I've got myself a working gold claim.
Joanie Stubbs: Well, sir, is that a damn fact?
Ellsworth: A hell of a working gold claim, and if we knew each other better I'd throw "fucking" in there somewhere.
Joanie Stubbs: If you did I'd try to catch it.
Ellsworth: A working fucking gold claim, Joanie, and thank you for allowing me my full range of expression.

No kidding, anyone who doesn't put Deadwood on the top of this list either hasn't seen the show or watches it on mute.

Tommy Ceez 02-21-05 11:28 PM

1). Deadwood
2) The Wire
3) Carnivale
4) Six Feet Under
5) The Sopranos
6) Sex and the City

Based upon current quality

OH CRAP...based on language?

Then put Deadwood on a scrap of paper taped to the railing of an observation post on the rim of the Grand Canyon...

then write the Sopranos on a piece of paper placed at the deepest point of the canyon...

...only then can you visiualize how much profanity spewes out of Deadwood (hands down the best show on TV)
