Late Show 01/31/2005
Tonight's guests:
Senior Vice President of Worldwide Pants and Former Executive Producer of The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson, Peter Lassally Former Bandleader of The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson, Doc Severinsen Should be a good one. |
I kinda figured he was doing some of Johnny's jokes at the beginning.
But, jeez, Tony Mendez must've been moving around too much when Dave was talking about Johnny... |

Well, wasn't it obvious that Dave was reading cue...oh wait, that was Jay...
sarcasm, my friend ;) Dave's show has been everything Jay's should've been but wasn't.. |
Gotcha! I'm a lil slow.
|
I thought it was a very good show. The only thing Leno had over Dave was Bob Newhart and Don Rickles on together. BUT, they were only guests of Johnny's show. Dave had his executive producer (who is also head of World Wide Pants, Dave's production company) as well as Doc. And, of course, Dave.
|
Seeing Doc Severinson and Tommy Newsome again after all these years was a treat. Doc was an underappreciated part of "The tonight Show."
|
I missed it. :( Hopefully I can catch it elsewhere.
|
The vintage Carson/Letterman moments were a treat. I had forgotten how much Dave's show had changed since he made the jump to CBS (and how much younger he was).
It was great hearing Doc leading that wonderful piece. |
What was the name of the peice? I had it, then completely forgot the name this morning...
|
I missed the first half of the show, but what I did see was great. Did they show anythign of the funniest skit involving Dave and Johnny? I'm talking about Judge Wapner from "The Peoples Court" overseeing a dispute between Johnny and Dave on the The Tonight Show. Was pretty funny.
|
didn't show that...but a show from 1986 where Johnny had Dave's piece of shit truck brought into the studio...priceless
And yes, it was shocking to see Dave being his old manic self and an amazing contrast to the guy now....not a bad thing, he's just gotten old. And if anyone should ever say the prefer Leno over Dave again, they should immediately be reminded of who Johnny was sending jokes too all these years....that speaks volumes right there. Say what you will, but Dave is a class act, and this show was a great example of that. |
I watched the first 20 minutes or so. Great stuff. The truck bit was classic.

It was a great show. They showed a bit where Johnny and Dave were talking over the phone and it went something like this:
Split screen showing Johhny and Dave talking to eachother over the phone Johnny: "Dave, im faxing you a joke, and no matter what happens over there, it left here funny." Boy i was tearing on that one :D |
That was great.
Conan did a great job tonite with a funny anecdote about the time he gave Johnny wrong directions to get out of the FOX lot when Johnny was doing his voice-over for the Simpsons. At the end, they showed the photos Conan has up on his wall. |
Not much to add, other than Letterman is a class act and it was a hilarious show.
Oh, and Jay Leno fucking sucks. Wish Conan would boot his ass tomorrow. |
Great show. Seeing those old clips makes me really want a "Best of Late Night" DVD.
|
Letterman underestimates himself when it comes to influence. Letterman has brought a lot to the table when it comes to late night. I wish Letterman could of had rickles on, he always gives him so much material for later shows with jokes that nobody gets.

I deeply agree. |

NBC owns all the Late Night with David Letterman material
(I was surprised to see some of it show up on the Carson tribute show) So NBC could put together a compilation, but it would be without the involvment of Dave or any of his people |
Uggh! I missed this too. I don't think they will repeat it either. Carson could reportedly be a little cranky, but you can't deny he was a huge influence on the talk show and comedy circuits. I can't even imagine what it was like for the comics that made it on the show and got the thumbs up or the coveted invite to the desk.
