Unscripted

Anyone else catch the first two episodes of this show last night?

I thought it was pretty good. It definitely had the mini-DV, improv, Soderbergh feel to it that K Street had.

I Thought it showed pretty interesting aspects about the world of acting.

I'll definitely continue watching.

Yep. I think I liked it. IMHO, it was far superior to the train wreck that was K Street but it did have that vibe. I'll check it out again.

BTW, didn't it seem like all the "real actors" (Noah Wyle, etc.) that the characters met were jerks.

Red Dog 01-10-05 03:26 PM

I missed it - I'll have to catch a rerun on on VOD. I hope it is not like K-Street. Yuck.

Deezer D was funny as a total asshole. George Lopez didn't seem to be a jerk though.

I really enjoyed the show. As has been mentioned, it was very much in the same vibe as K Street, but I thought this was much better. I didn't realize that the show was actually 30 minutes. So as I was watching the show after recording it, I was very confused when halfway through the "Unscripted" title came up. It took me a couple seconds to adjust. I like when HBO shows their 30-minute shows back to back.

This must have been filming for the past 18 months or not longer. I was wondering when we'd see Brian's turn on One Tree Hill last season (playing "Jake" ironically enough), and then his character got the boot this season.

Some of the stuff makes you wonder how thin that line is between their real lives or recreations of other actor's experiences with rejection, and audition sniping, etc.

Plus, the whole cliche subplot with Krista doing the acting coach, Langella, does make you raise an eyebrow.

das Monkey 01-22-05 08:18 PM

While I've enjoyed the show, it's too obviously fake in so many parts. I know the point is to mix the two, but seeing well-known actors playing characters mixed with well-known actors playing themselves just gets annoying. In the first episode, I really thought Frank Langella was running the class ... then you find out he's some guy named Goddard. Hank Azaria's Hank Azaria, but Ann Magnuson is some other lady. It just gets kind of annoying after a while.

That said, it's funny and entertaining and far better than K-Street.

The subplot of Krista Allen trying to get away from her softcore porn roots seems painful at times for Krista, and it's a little uncomfortable to watch.

Patman 01-28-05 06:52 PM

I finally watched episode 5 of this show. I never thought I'd ever hear Krista Allen rap about her Emmanuelle past, but there it was.

Does anyone know anything about the ABC show that Brian was locked into, which was used to explain why he had to depart from One Tree Hill in season 1? I guess that year has passed since he's back on the show now.

It makes you wonder how much of this show is real, and how much is scripted, where is that line?

Bobby Shalom 01-29-05 11:34 AM

I was kind of wondering the same thing too Patman.

Regardless, I'm finding this to be very entertaining, and one of the best new shows.

It was because of his appearance on the Bonnie Hunt show, which they showed on the first or second episode of Unscripted.

Patman 01-30-05 09:53 AM

That's f'd up unless he signed up to be a recurring character on the Bonnie Hunt show. I guess it's water under the bridge now, but during that time, you wonder if crap like that wouldn't make you suicidal.

I just bought this as a blind buy during the last ddd sale and through 5 episodes I have been thoroughly entertained. Clooney has been impressive even though he seems to have garnered all his knowledge from Soderbergh(who I think is great). Was this just a 10 episode and done series? And in reference to das monkey's post, I think Ann Magnuson did play herself. And yikes, what an uncomfortable scene that was!

Giving this the bump that I'm suprised it didn't get with the Heslov Clooney love surrounding Goodnight and Goodluck.
Just picked this up on DVD. I had seen the entire series on HBO and just didn't think it'd be worth watching again, but I'm really loving it, even though most of the entertainment is from how painful some of these actors experiences are. Sort of like the Office.
It's unfortunate that Jennifer Hall hasn't broken out a little more since this. She just seems like one of those quirky cute actresses that would develop a small cult following.

Patman 03-18-06 08:04 PM

If you've recently seen the DVD release of "Prime", then here' a bump to let people know that they incorporated Brian being cast in "Prime" into his storyline in "Unscripted".
