When will U.S. TV be 100% WS?

I only dream of that day that every show is broadcasted in 16:9..
I can't wait to be honest.

I hear that it's either going to be this year or 2006..hopefully ASAP.

There is no deadline that everything has to be in 16:9 format or in HD for that matter.

Why?

What is the difference with Wheel of Fortune in 4:3 or 16:9? Network News?

Format has little to do with quality of the content.

I can see 100% of "prime time only" being 16x9 widescreen in a year of so and on some level it's almost there now. Errr maybe 75-80% now of prime time is widescreen? Just a guess on my part being most if not all the show I watch are in HDtv 16x9.

At least for the main shows, to the point I'm almost shocked when some shows like say scrubs etc is not in HD yet..I mean come on, everything else, even CRAPPY shows are in HD now.

but I can't see all of US tv going to widescreen format any time soon being the bulk of tv, outside of prime time, has always been older syndication shows or junky cheap stuff.. As in all the day time talk shows, people court, game shows, soaps etc etc etc.. I can't see them all going to widescreen anytime soon. I don't know if we really need tripe like "Jerry!! Jerry!! Jerry!!!" in HD anyways. Wow look at the mullet in HD! Errr no.. Plus many older shows in syndication are not in widescreen anyways and there is no way to make them widescreen really..

We don't go 100% wide screen til all the shows on the air NOW in ws fall to syndication.. 5+ years from now maybe? Even then odds are it will be more like 70% WS I would guess..

I don't care, according to the local tv affiliates they have no plans to ever start broadcasting in HD. As of today our CBS and NBC affiliates aren't even showed here on Cox Cable because they are in a fight about whether or not the affiliates should get paid by Cox to be on their lineup. Sucks having an HDTV and some HD channels but I can't get all the network stuff in HD(now I can't get some of it at all for now). My beloved Horns in the Rose Bowl..had to watch them in fuzzy SD, to see any of it in HD I had to wait for the Sportscenter highlights..

Don't they keep pushing the deadline back every year? I'm not holding my breath. I've had a HD tuner for nearly 2 1/2 years now and I still only get about 10 channels with Time Warner.

When you can get one of the tvs for under $200 at Wal-Mart, it'll be 5 years after that. And even then it'll really be only 90% at best, considering there are people out there who use 25 year old tvs. There are still people out there using b&w tvs, for crying out loud.

That switch to color may well show us that shows that television will never be 100% widescreen just like, even today, it's not 100% color.

There is NO deadline for the switch to HD or 16:9. The only deadline is the switch from analog to digital. Stations are not required to broadcast in HD or 16:9.

I'm not so sure about that. Last I heard the "deadline" has been bumped back from 2006 to 2008.

No, he's right - there is a deadline but it's not about 16:9 or HD, just that the stations make the switch to digital.

According to the HDTV.net FAQ:

Will TV stations stop broadcasting regular signals immediately when they switch to digital?

No. TV stations are required to continue broadcasting regular TV signals along side the digital until 2006. Cable TV and satellite TV are not affected by this FCC ruling. Cable operators are compelled to a "must carry" rule for HDTV, and pass thru it’s local transmission, just as they do with local analog television today

Should I wait before I buy a new TV?

Conventional NTSC analog broadcasting will continue for some time up until 2006 when analog broadcast will cease. Any NTSC TV bought today will be able to work well beyond the digital deadline of 2006 with use of a set-top box, giving you the best sound and picture performance it has to offer. The cost of set top boxes and complete digital televisions are likely to come down over the next several years.

Who is going to broadcast the new digital TV programs?

The FCC has authorized and mandated all U.S. TV stations currently broadcasting analog television to set up and operate second channels for digital television. This means that your local analog channel 4, for example, also will provide digital programming on another channel. You'll still be able to watch channel 4, but the same station will have digital programs for HDTV on its other channel. Every station will be able to operate two channels until 2006 when, the FCC will phase out our current analog TV broadcasting.

How about never. I expect there to be M*A*S*H reruns, always 4:3, on television until I am old and grey.
