LOTR: FOTR to be shown in High Definition (HDTV)

I hadn't seen anyone post this, but I noticed a commercial for it last night:

Don't miss The Network Television premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in High Definition, November 7 [on The WB].

Highly doubtful, given that it would be a 5 hour block of time with commercials. It would be sweet if I were wrong.

And what a surprise it's on broadcast TV this early! I guess it just makes solid promo sense for the ROTK: EE in December.

I thought they were one of the first in LA to broadcast in HDTV?

Perhaps this is my ignorance, but if the film on dvd is 480p, then how can they be showing it in HD?

Is WB part of the AOL TW empire? If yes, then they own the movie anyway

They must be going back to the original HD master. The DVD is not the only version available to them. I seriously doubt they are upconverting it. Now, what aspect ratio will it be?

Geez, don't spread misinformation and suggest that they're upconverting it. Movies air in HD all the time. This is the first time LOTR is airing in HD on network TV, but it's previously appeared on ExpressVu in Canada and Starz' HD channel.

BTW, The Two Towers is going to air in Fall 2005 on the WB, and Return of the King will follow in 2006. They have the rights to show all three movies in 2006-2007, and plans are for high-definition broadcasts of each of those as well.

Not sure if I'm gonna want to watch this. I've seen a few movies now in HD, and I'll never be able to watch the LOTR DVD ever again if I see it in HD.

I'd rather see it without commercials (my DVD) than in HD

I saw ROTK in HD on D* PPV. It looked amazing! Cropped, but still amazing.

You may have a very short memory, but just a few years ago a blockbuster of this size wouldn't get shown on network TV, much less in Hi-Def, for 5 years or more after its original release.

I guess that's "progress."

It's almost certainly not upconverted.

@GuessWho: That is why you need an HDPVR!

Well, not sure what you mean by a "few years ago", but Jurassic Park opened in theaters in June 1993 and aired on NBC less than two years later in May 1995. That might have been an exception though.

3 years has been the standard for over 20 years now.

Did anyone get to see this in HD? How did it look? Was it the Theatrical or Extended editions?

I believe it was theatrical (but not 100% sure). Anyway, it really looked amazing in HD. I was truly impressed.

It was the theatrical version. And only the first half of the movie too (It ended at the same place the layer change is on the theatrical dvd, which is the same place the EE ends the first disc: Right after the line "Great. Where are we going?")

The second half airs tonight from 8-10.

It wasn't the full 2.35:1 frame either, it was cropped to 1.77:1
