Who's Line is it Anyway? (real improv or ???)

I got into a discussion w/ some recently about this and we were trying to figure out whether or not it really was improv, clever editing or scripted. Anyone know for certain one way or the other? I'm mainly thinking about the original but if anyone knows about Drew's version that's fine too.

Also anyone know if these (either series) are coming to DVD?

I was always under the assumption that they both were improv.

Improv and clever editting, since they shoot hours and hours of tape and pick out the best skits for air.

It's not scripted, but they do shoot lots of extras from what I've heard.

I saw Colin, Chip and Brad at my college and that was definately all improv and VERY funny, so they do have talent without the editing.

It's all improv and there really isn't any difference between the British and American versions other than the host. Most of the players did both shows at some point.

Actually, I think there's quite a few people from the British version who've never done the American one. I know I've never seen Tony Slattery or the big guy with the mole on his head in the American one, and they were on the British one pretty frequently.

I remember at least one American show where they had at 2 or 3 regulars from the British show as special guests. I don't remember their names because I haven't seen it in so long. Is the big guy that did all the songs Mike McShane? I'm pretty sure I saw him on Drew's show once.

Even if I'm wrong about that, I know just almost all the regulars on Drew's show have done the British one.

I wish Josie would do the American version.. or has she? I can't recall. She was one of my favorites on the British version.
The best British episodes were always Ryan, Josie, Colin and Gregg.

Josie's been on maybe one or two episodes of the American show. I seem to remember her not being all that funny in those episodes, though.

The British version seemed more off the cuff, and thus much better.

I thought the host on the UK show was better as well.

How do you guys know the US one is improv? Don't get me wrong, I love watching that show, but many of the skits seem like they are a little prepared beforehand. Not necessarily completely scripted out, but "Okay, today we're going to do a hoe down about fat people."
