80's ironic horror anthology show appreciation (Tales From the...)
I'm referring to:
Tales From the Crypt Tales From the Darkside The Twilight Zone (80's version) Friday the 13th (no Jason, just people collecting cursed artifacts) What else am I forgetting? You can count stuff like Spielberg's Amazing Stories. I'm sure a bunch of us grew up on these, I used to watch them as a kid since my family always left me alone at home, and I'd often end up terrified. I think the Sci Fi Channel has the rights to all of these, anyone know if they're shown somewhat regularly? |
Alfred Hitchcock Presents (the 80's version)
I used to love watching that, and the 80's Twilight Zone. Rob |
Short lived, but I recall that Darkroom had a good segment or two.
|
My two favorites were Alfred Hitchcock presents and Tales From the Crypt.
I have seen AH Presents in years, fairly recently have seen Tales From the Crypt on late at night on Sci-Fi. |
Don't forget "Freddy's Nightmares" hosted by the gloved one himself. :)
|
I loved "Tales from the Darkside" but I had to mute the opening credits because that guys voice creeped me out.
"Man lives in the sunlit world of what he believes to be reality. But... there is, unseen by most, an underworld, a place that is just as real, but not as brightly lit... a Darkside." |
Monsters, anyone?

Now I wanna go watch Waxwork - tivoed it a week or so ago. :D |
I loved all the ones already named, plus The Hitchhiker, which used to air on the USA network. I'm sure I first saw it in reruns, in the late 80s early 90s (when i was around 8 or 9), along with old eps of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. I think it's pretty funny that I first knew of Hitchcock as "that fat guy with the creepy voice" who introduced episodes of his show and kinda scared me. Then my dad informed me that he was one of the greatest directors ever. Now I've seen and really love a ton of his films, so seeing the show again (is it on dvd?) would be a fun time warp for me.
Does anyone remember Ray Bradbury Theatre? It's another anthology show that I have no clue when it originally aired or in what country it was made, but I first saw it sometime in the late 80s. I remember a lot of great episodes. I haven't seen it on tv in years. Another great forgotten show. There are too many unfunny sitcoms out there. One of them should be replaced with a new horror/suspense anthology series. The Twilight Zone was brought back recently for what, the third time?, and unfortunately it didn't last long. |
Tales from the Darkside was great! How about "Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected"
|
The Hitchhiker
|
I haven't thought of these shows in forever, but my boyfriend (now hubby) and I used to stay up and watch Friday the 13th and Monsters back to back on Saturday nights. I really liked those shows.
I don't know when this one started, but how about "Are You Afraid of the Dark" on Nick. A younger target audience, but very well done IMHO. |
Wow, did this bring back memories. One of my earliest memories was of the 1984 Tales from the Darkside episode A Case of the Stubborns. I was 4 at the time, and my mom would watch this show. *shudder*
Any plans for this series to come out on DVD? |
I wouldn't mind getting this one:
