Talk Soup ended a good year before the show McHale hosts launched as "The 'What The...? Awards". A few weeks after it launched, it changed names and very slightly changed formats (McHale wore a tux the first bit). It's not the same show. That's history.

  1. When E! launched The "What the?" Awards, it was a direct rip-off of VH1's Best Week Ever with the award and panel segments. However, as internet history would show, there were already comparisons abound to Talk Soup due to:
    • Most of Talk Soup's behind-the-scenes crew still in tact.
    • The show's "snarky" nature.
How funny that years later, VH1 would rip off The Soup when they retooled Best Week Ever.
  2. When E! retooled the show into The Soup is when it became a spiritual successor to Talk Soup. Segments like Chat Stew reappeared and McHale grew more into his role as the host.
  3. Once The Soup was in its prime, McHale hosted a retrospective documentary on Talk Soup rather than doing the show for a week. I can't find any clips of it online, but at that point, everyone acknowledged that this was the second coming of Talk Soup.
  4. Like the clip I posted above, even pasts hosts have acknowledged this is the same show that was aired once before.
I'm sure you'll say next that Talk Soup was at it's prime with Kinnear as host, right? Get the fuck outta here. Everyone and their mother gets that The Soup has way more in common with Talk Soup than just the network it airs on.

... and you know what? It's the better show too.

I liked it when the original soup boy was the host.

I will fight you all for you wrongness! Any fool can see both we're inspired by the 1930 film Soup to Nuts and its gastro porn parody if the same name.

In all seriousness, this was very well done. I can adopt this as definitive. Internet spat halted!

ETA: I didn't get E! when Kinnear hosted. My first Talk Soup host was Henson. Those were the days. I do think McHale does it best of all, though.

I prefer Kinnear/Sparks over the Henson/Tyler eras. I didn't find Henson and Tyler funny on Talk Soup and still continue not to find them funny.

A The Soup spin-off is being developed by E!, could this mean Community will not be picked up?

Joel can handle a "spin off" that will take him a few hours a week.

It means nothing in regards to Community. He does movies at the same time as The Soup AND Community.

I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. I wonder if McHale will try to do something similar on another network.

I'm a little unclear the way the article is phrased. Is it ending because Joel McHale doesn't want to do it anymore so they network decided it isn't worth finding a new host? Or did the network make the decision?

Been running on fu. Especially for awhile. There's nothing but bad reality TV on here now. It's all the same every. Week.

Whatever happened to The Grace Helbig Show? It seemed to be their attempt to replace Chelsea Handler but it seems to have gotten no reaction from the public whatsoever. It was pretty terrible if you ask me. I can't find any official cancellation announcement for it though, but I can't imagine they're planning on bringing it back.

Every show they try to launch after The Soup fails. This brand of humor is not their audience. Chelsea did well because she had a trashy "drunk chick" brand of humor that the Kardashian crowd eat up. Thankfully, she got tired of being apart of the E! network and is moving on to better things.

So I guess E! will focus on everything Kardashian and ?? Just pull the plug on this network entirely, please.

Someone on another board said they were at a taping and Joel said the ratings got a slight bump when they went "Live", which implies that they might have been in some trouble.

I've been watching "E!" since it was "Movie Time" back in the early days of cable. I've watched every incarnation of "Soup". "The Soup" is the only show on the network I currently watch.

Weird how E cancelled it, especially since their contract with McHale went until the end of 2016. Hopefully he has a pay or play deal in place since the show's ending a year early.

I haven't watched the show in years, but I guess I'll have to tune in now for McHale's final swan song. Maybe they can go back to the What The...? Awards on the final episode.

E, here's what I think about you:

Re: The Soup (E!) - Series Thread

After a four-year break, The Soup is coming back. E! announced tonight during its telecast of the People’s Choice Awards that its signatures franchise will return with actress-comedian Jade Catta-Preta as host. (watch the Flashdance-influenced promo below)

Premiering in early 2020, the “reimagined” and “supercharged” new version of The Soup will continue to skewering pop culture.

“We’re excited to bring this beloved franchise back to the network, with a new take on an old favorite,” said Rod Aissa, EVP, Production and Development, Oxygen & Production, E!. “Jade’s quick wit and keen observations will provide a much-needed voice in today’s pop culture landscape delivered in a way that only The Soup can.”

E! most recently canceled The Soup at the end of 2015, ending the franchise’s 22-year run after a total of 3329 episodes.

The show premiered in 1991 as Talk Soup and famously launched the career of original host Greg Kinnear, who hosted until 1995. He was followed by John Henson (1995-99), Hal Sparks (1999-2000) and Aisha Tyler (2001-02).

It was re-launched as The Soup in 2004 with Joel McHale who remained as host until the series’ 2015 cancellation. The show earned a 2014 Emmy nom for Outstanding Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program’

Catta-Preta is a Brazilian-born comic and actress performs at comedy clubs both in English and Portuguese. Her credits include MTV’s Girl Code and Punk’d, Comedy Central’s @Midnight and guest roles on Modern Family and The Jim Gaffigan Show.

The Soup is produced by Mission Control with Sue Murphy, Dwight D. Smith and Michael Agbabian serving as executive producers.
