24 Season 2/Season 3 question

Just watched 24 Season 2 and have a quick follow-up about Season 3.

Based on what I had heard about what certain characters are doing in Season 3 (particularly Kim), I had been under the impression that Season 3 takes place some time after Season 2. Based on the way Season 2 ended, though, it seems like Season 3 would pick up right where Season 2 left off. So how much time passes between Season 2 and Season 3?

Accroding to TVTome (they're usually right), season (day) 3 occurs THREE YEARS after season 2. Seasons 1 and 2 are 18 months apart.

Since Palmer is running for re-election (that's not really a spoiler), 3 years seems about right.

Interesting. Because the way Season 2 ended, it looked like the bad guys weren't going to give Bauer and Palmer a five-minute break, let alone a three year break. Of course, given the condition Bauer was in by the end of Season 2, I'm not sure he could have handled another 24 minutes, let alone 24 hours.

"My name is Jack Bauer. I need to lie down."

Am I correct in assuming Season 3 explains what happened to President Palmer at the end of Season 2?

Well... not really. You see that he still has scars on his hand from the virus or whatever, and he is being treated by a doctor for it. But beyond that it doesn't really explain what happened.

That kind of sucks. I knew the threat during Season 3 was
Spoiler:
a biological threat

so I just assumed that was what was being set up at the end of Season 2. Are the bad guys in Season 3 the same guys who were behind Season 2?

Season 3 has relatively nothing to do with Season 2. There are a few minor things like who works for whom and stuff, but that's really it. If you've watched 2 full seasons now, you know they're not overly diligent at wrapping up plot points. Season 3 is no exception.
