Your Top Blind-buy Names

I'm not sure what to call this, so forgive the odd title, but with Angel ending and The West Wing plummeting, it occurred to me that I would buy any future project from Joss or Sorkin, sight unseen. So here's the question: who are your top blind-buy names? For the purposes of this question, assume that a DVD set is released with no title, no artwork, no anything other than one person's name. You have no word-of-mouth, no information of any kind other than the name. Assume it's a full season run (13-24 episodes), and assume that the cost is significant enough that you're not just going to buy anything (let's say $5 per episode). Further assume that there's no resell value. Essentially, focus on the heart of the question itself: artists who would merit blind-buy attention from you, not just "interest," but cash. It can be an actor, director, writer, whatever; and you can assume that said person will have a direct impact on the series (i.e. not just an "executive producer" or "consultant"). Also, it would help it that person is alive.

Who are the people in television that you would gladly drop hard-earned cash on their product with no information about it whatsoever other than their involvement?

Speilberg - in TV alone, Band of Brothers, Taken. I have no idea how he contributed to either but just having his name attached brings 100% credibility.

The two that come to mind for me right away you mentioned in your post, but I would add Larry David, and Dave Foley to that list. I will probably add more later, but I loved Seinfeld and CYE, and I loved News Radio and Kids In The Hall, so they would be a good start.

Also have to add Bill Lawrence for Scrubs amongst his other series, and the fact that it would probably have Christa Miller in it somewhere

He was "executive producer" for each and was gracious enough to "present" Taken, w(hatever)tf that means.

For reference, applying this approach over the last decade, you'd be the proud owner of the following series: Taken, Broken Silence, Pinky, Elmyra & the Brain, Toonsylvania, High Incident, Freakazoid!, SeaQuest DSV, and Family Dog.

I didn't think I had any, until "Quintuplets" was announced. The only reason I'm checking that show out was because of Andy Richter.

However, this only applies to tv series...his presence isn't enough to get me to see New York Minute.

Graham Yost - From the Earth to the Moon, Band of Brothers, Boomtown

Mitchell Hurwitz - Arrested Development

Matt Groening - apparently created a couple of animated shows that seem to be rather popular.

and I'd love to see if David Chase was more than a one-hit wonder.

Michael Mann

I was very tempted to say Dick Wolf, as L&O and SVU have been great shows, and I was a fan of LA Dragnet, but I can't stand L&O: CI.

Their names are escaping me right now, but the people who did Once & Again and My So-Called Life. If they had a new series announced, I'd definitely clear off some time in my TV schedule for it.

Also Joss Whedon. And if David Lynch ever did another TV series.

Joss, without question. He's had three home runs in three at-bats -- Buffy, Angel, Firefly.

Herskovitz and Zwick, these guys and Whedon would be on my definitely buy list.
