Line of Fire to return on may 30 as a tv movie!

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - ABC will resurrect its short-lived drama "Line of Fire" as a movie a few days after May sweeps ends.
The movie will fold together two of the show's remaining four episodes into a two-hour "premiere event," the network says. It's scheduled to air Sunday, May 30, four days after the official end of the 2003-04 season.

The show follows a group of FBI agents in Richmond, Va., as they work to bring down a crime syndicate headed by a ruthless and social-climbing mobster, Jonah Malloy (David Paymer). It earned some decent reviews when it premiered in December, but failed to generate much of an audience during its tryout in the "NYPD Blue" spot.

"Line of Fire" averaged about 7.2 million viewers over its nine weeks, well below the 10 million "Blue" draws in a typical week. ABC originally ordered 13 episodes of the series; a network spokesperson couldn't be reached for comment on the fate of the remaining two episodes.
The movie opens with
Spoiler:
the daughter of FBI Agent Jennifer Sampson (Julie Ann Emery) being critically wounded in a botched hit attempt on her mother. The shooting sets off a manhunt for the gunman while Sampson deals with the personal tragedy. Meanwhile, Malloy seeks revenge after his wife (Kristen Shaw) is raped -- by a cousin of one of his own men.

Leslie Bibb ("Popular"), Leslie Hope ("24"), Anson Mount ("Crossroads") and Jeffrey D. Sams ("CSI," "Cupid") also star.

So....out of the FOUR remaining shows, they're only going to show us two..?

:hscratch:

what monkeys are in charge of the networks nowadays?

This RIGHT HERE is why the networks are ****ed up.

It's a new show, with unknown characters, that premiered in the middle of a season, and well more than HALF the people who watched the show that's been around for years watched the new one...and that's disappointing for them.

Whatever, jackasses.

B.A. 05-10-04 11:13 PM

Why can't they show all four episodes? :hscratch: They are all asshats.

Patman 05-10-04 11:15 PM

Yay, I guess, but I can't even remember the characters' names, for the most part...

I do remember the latino dude being gay, though.

Wasn't that Amiel? And that is the only name I can remember - I see everyone's face, but not their names.

They have a whole summer, including a no-compete period vs NBC during the Olympics and they are only showing 2 episodes? :hscratch:

movieking 05-11-04 10:27 AM

I loved this series, and am glad to be seeing any episodes on the air again.

ENDContra 05-24-04 02:48 AM

Not only are they only showing 2 episodes, but according to tvtome.com, these are actually episodes 12 and 13, with 10 and 11 still on the shelf.

Buck Turgidson 05-24-04 03:03 AM

I would happily watch this how and The D.A. if they were on the Fall schedule.

Special Agent Sampson

^bump^

Just a reminder this is airing tonight

B.A. 05-30-04 10:49 AM

I've missed S.A. Sampson.

Patman 05-30-04 11:44 AM

Will this be in HDTV?

movieking 05-30-04 07:20 PM

Starting in about 45 minutes from now. I, for one, cannot wait, although I will mourn it when it is over, as another quality TV show is gone before its time (yet this is the same network that airs According To Jim and The Bachelor, so I guess quality is not a big prerequisite for being on the air).

ABC's web-site lists it as being HD, so that had better be the case. All set to record the HD feed, so here's hoping that the last taste of this excellent show for quite some time will be HD.

Patman 05-30-04 08:55 PM

And so it is in glorious HDTV!

And Tom Cruise's cousin plays a mean horny bastiche, doesn't he?

Patman 05-30-04 10:04 PM

Well, at least they didn't leave the loyal viewers with a cliffhanger, and had Paige save the day. Paige has come a long ways from her initial introduction as a green, gung-ho agent into Lisa's go-to-gal.

Emil just doesn't cut it as the tough guy shaking down the girl with the tie with the bad guy.

Jonah, Jonah, Jonah, what were you thinking, talking to your wife like that after what she had been through. He deserves the rain of caca that's about to be dumped on him and his organization. (Too bad we don't get to see it).

Yet another amazing show bites the dust. After those last two hours, it's painfully clear this was one of the highest quality crime shows to debut in the last couple of years. What's even crazier is the fact that it actually performed well in ratings. So often people seem to avoid the quality programming, but it wasn't the case here.

Whatever... At least we got a decent ending. It was predictable that Lisa's son wasn't going to get killed, but even so, seeing Paige put the pedal to the metal and ram a guy head on at 90mph? Doesn't get better than that.

And Jonah's wife turning... It's about time, he was written as one of the most compassionless main characters that I've seen. Even people like Tony Soprano, you still see them as human. Jonah, who makes this big speech about how wrong cruelty is, then goes and tell his wife she was raped because she dressed like a whore... The ending was perfect, and as Patman said, it's just a damn shame we don't get to see him get what's coming to him.

All I can say is this: Good luck finding a replacement for NYPD Blue, ABC. You had the perfect show with decent ratings. I hope fans of Line of Fire will make sure to remind ABC of said fact when NYPD is gone and they are lucky to get 3-4 million viewers at 10pm Tuesdays.

MrX 05-30-04 10:27 PM

Larry will go down as one of the dumbest character's in TV history.

"I should have taken it out on the black bitch"

I wasn't a big fan of the show when it was on but thought tonight's 2 hours were very good.

movielib 05-31-04 12:37 AM

Excellent two hour finale to this far above average show.

While it hadn't occurred to me that Jonah would talk that way to his wife, it wasn't at all out of character and I could believe it. Glad to see his wife see the light and take a courageous stand for the future we will never know. I hope Carmella was watching.

Blake 05-31-04 01:01 AM

What an amazing show that the monkeys at ABC screwed up with. I still don't know why it was pulled (like ratings can get any worse for that network).

A great two hour finale of a show I'm going to miss...god damn monkeys...

If I'm good, I'll go to heaven when I die.

And when I do, God won't have a buncha virgins waiting for me, or beautiful green fields filled with flowers. No, he'll have two ABC execs, sitting side by side - one that canned SportsNight, and one that canned Line of Fire.

And I'll get to beat the living hell out of them.

That was seven of the most compelling minutes of television to end that show. And that we'll never get to see Jonah's wife go G on him...it pisses me off to think about it.

OK, dammit. Lay off the monkeys. It's time for you all to face reality ... humans did this. That's right ... your beloved humans. Stop blaming the monkeys. I suspect we'd do a better job anyway.

As to the show, I'm just now sitting down to watch it, but I can't help but laugh at how they've promoted this thing: it's a WORLD PREMIERE MOVIE EVENT!!! rotfl

Pretty good way to end everything, and I really liked the final scenes with Van Doren, who evolved from a pretty annoying character to something tolerable by the end (although reminding me about her lame 9/11 speech before the episode began wasn't the best of ideas). Still, I could barely tolerate the heavy-handed drama, constantly cueing the "heroic theme," Jonah's speech was laughable, and it wouldn't be Line of Fire without yet another voice-over montage. That's fine every once in a while, but not in every hour. I really wanted to like this show, and I will miss it, as I was willing to give it a chance to find its footing and grow into itself; but watching this WORLD PREMIERE MOVIE EVENT, I recall all of its flaws and where it fell so short of superior shows like The Shield or The Sopranos.

I missed the early part of the first show due to weather bulletins, but everything I saw seemed good. I actually fast-forwarded through the parts about SA Sampson's kid about until the tactical team found the dead gun runner because I wasn't interested, but that could be because I missed the shooting itself.

I thought it was odd that Malloy made this big speech about family, and then was so uncompassionate towards his wife at their very first meeting after she had been raped. Maybe it was to show more clearly that his real family is his mob family, and the wife is just around for his pleasure.

Feels like the show was cut down right as it could've reached a big turning point, with Mrs. Malloy turning against her husband. (I didn't want to compare it to Sports Night, but it almost feels the same way... "What, Dana and Casey aren't going to be together right now? Well, now what's going to happen?!") I wish they would've given it at least one more season to gain more of a viewership.
