I think this was brought up one time and they said there'd be no way they'd do it...frostbite is apparantly much more dangerous than hot weather for long-term health.

Also, I believe they said that they will always have Survivor on an island setting from now on, because they found that that worked the best.

Jadzia 05-14-04 10:49 AM

I thought it would have been funny if Jeff Probst announced the winner was...Jasmine Trias.

Fok 05-14-04 11:53 AM

I'm glad Rupet won as well. Kinda no surprise there.

Or better yet: Johnny Fairplay!!!

Regarding doing Survivor in a cold climate : the food factor is also an issue. Not much coconuts and fish in winter and even if it was in some woodsy area in the fall, they can't live on bark and berries alone. They would have to be given rice or some basic grub.

I don't know if this is legit, but all you have to do is is fill out an application.
My dog is an ordained minister now.

I wonder if the Survivor people came up with this second million just to take care of Rupert?

From the moment it was announced we knew who would win and I think they did too!

Rupert has helped that show out so much in getting people interested in it again. I bet they did this to take care of him! ;)

From reading the DVDTalk Interview with Jeff Probst, he mentioned some interesting stuff about getting some of the All-Stars to come:

[There was a little roller coaster to it. Early on when we said we're doing it, five or six survivors started popping off about "Well I'll need this, and I'll need that." I was at a charity event and People magazine asked me what I thought about it and I said, "Well they can stay the ***** home." That message got out to them really clearly and CBS wanted that out there that "we don't need you, and let's not forget who's driving this ship, it's us." There was a battle, that no one will ever admit to, a battle of ego between the people who thought they were the superstars and the network saying, "You've got be kidding me, you've got to me kidding me making demands." And then it all passed, everybody took a deep breath and said, "Come on, we're doing this show with or without you - you want to be a part of it or not?"]

I wonder who the five or six survivors were that thought they were superstars.

I'm gonna guess Jerri was one of them, and though I like Colby, I can see him being one.

Who do you guys think were making demands?

Maxflier 05-14-04 02:01 PM

I bet Johnny Fairplay was one. That would explain why he wasn't on All Stars, because i would have expected him to be a shoe-in for the All Star edition.

He and Jeff both implied on the finale show that he wasn't "asked" to do it.

I heard Mike Skupin got "dis-invited" at the last second. Maybe he was making demands? I know he has a lot of speaking engagements and business deals now from his Survivor stint.

Big Boy Laroux 05-14-04 02:14 PM

skupin has speaking engagements?

"How not to sit next to a fire" by Michael Skupin

Jeremy517 05-14-04 02:16 PM

The rumor I've heard is that Mike Skupin was uninvited when Rupert became popular and got invited.

Probably "NO SURVIVORS CAN HAVE FIRE!!!"

I think if Survivor doesn't start mixing it up its locale, its going to end really soon. I mean, how many times can you watch 10 pathetic people gathering around two sticks trying to start a fire? And it was better when everyone was starving instead of having plentiful food supply. And keep the family members out of it for god sake. The only time people should cry is when they get booted out.

Random ponderings:
It would be interesting if there were no 'teams' only individuals where they didn't sleep in the same camp and didn't share work, etc. I guess it would be boring though with no group dynamic.

Patman 05-14-04 02:18 PM

Or

"Mmmm...fire bad..."

Big Boy Laroux 05-14-04 02:36 PM

oh wait, skupin was the guy that made the spear to kill the "wild" pig, right?

burnett has a soft spot for psychos...

icondude 05-14-04 02:53 PM

I think they did do this special show, just so Rupert could get $1M. I'm also sure that the ratings of that one show justified the expense.

Given his recent air time and most people short term memory, I am not suprized. Rudy Boesch would have been a better choice, but he was only in the first survivir and got voted off All-Star too quickly to be in peoples minds. Same for Rob C.

I agree 100% on this one!

Patman 05-14-04 03:53 PM

If Rupert really did pull in 85% of the vote, then 4th place couldn't have pulled in more than 5% of the rest of the vote. Not an overwhelming show of support for any of the other in the top 4.

yecul 05-14-04 04:07 PM

They gave away the $1M because people love to be part of it. Giving the money to Rupert was not the intention. Getting 8,000,000 to their website to vote and subsequently to watch the wrap-up show was their motivation. Rupert was the clear winning, but who gives a shit if the ratings are good?

The 30-second commercial revenue that they generated during that episode also probably exceeded $1 million so that was a no-brainer for Viacom. They also probably got lots of revenue from Cingular for being the Cell Phone provider that took in text-messages for the voting. The budget was also low since they didn't have to pay the Survivors anything to be on that show. The only real expense was the $1 million check and probably Jeff Probst's salary.

DAC 05-14-04 05:38 PM

Don't the survivors get paid a little more for each day they make it? I thought I heard they got like $750 a day they "survived". I am probably way off, but it seems like I remeber hearing something like that back when this first started. Besides, how do these people pay their bills while they are gone? I know if I didn't get a paycheck for 6 weeks I would have creditors and my mortgage company after me.

DAC 05-14-04 05:41 PM

Ahh yes, there it is.... Although it doesn't say how much they receive.
