William Hung on Today show...I am traumatized

I flipped on one of our store TVs this morning and it had the Today Show on with William Hung performing "She Bang." I had only heard of this guy in name and frome reading newstories, I did not really think he was as bad as some people claimed. Then I heard him this morning, and I am still recovering.
WHY would someone give him a record contract? He is beyond bad, he's horrid, he sounds like an instrument of torture. His singing sounded like a distress signal of some sort with a few gasps of air every now and then.

What has happened to this world?

Shit, he's eons past that.

They gave him a record contract because they believed that there were enough people who would buy the album out of morbid curiosity or as a gag gift or goof.

Slowpc 04-09-04 08:32 AM

^
And that happened. On the billboard digital tracks chart he has 4 songs on there... the most of anyone else. I don't know the placement on the chart of his new cd, but it is prob. not that high up.. well i hope not anyway.

It is smart that they tried to capitalize right away. IF any more time had passed, no one would have cared...

Gil Jawetz 04-09-04 09:32 AM

His album is number 3 on amazon.

Does anyone really still care? Ugh - his IS way past his 15 min.

Wonder if he'll ever do a cover of "Brandy" or maybe "Staying Alive?"

I notice no one has tried to get him to sing the national anthem yet.

hahn 04-09-04 02:44 PM

 Only in the U.S. Well, I say kudos to him for being able to get rich for singing and dancing badly. VERY badly.

indianajdp 04-09-04 03:00 PM

I, too, am sjhocked by this whole thing.
But I say  to William!

Mopower 04-09-04 03:37 PM

He was also on Leno last night. Performing none other than "She Bang!"

DRG 04-09-04 03:48 PM

Sound samples on Amazon... his version of Bailamos actually sounds pretty close to the Enrique Iglesias version. (Says a lot about Enrique)

Robert 04-09-04 03:55 PM

The fact that he is one the most grotesque-looking creatures on earth is one of the reasons the media loves him.

Click on Tom Arico. Listen... and believe.

My thoughts drift to the vocal recording sessions where engineers, friends and musicians must have conspired to tell Tom "Yeah man, it sounds great! Keep on singing..."

 Good grief! we have a new winner!

Trigger 04-09-04 08:42 PM

royalties only go to the song writer. (remakes are borrowing the writer's melody and lyrics, not a performer'sperformance)

did ricky write it?

As stated in an earlier thread, he's probably up to his head in poontang by now. I bet in another few months there will be an E! true hollywood story of him broke out on the street having spent all his money on hookers and booze.

Patman 04-10-04 02:19 AM

I saw the Tonight Show segment. He's quite the milker of those 900 seconds of fame. Did you know his mom is, well, his mom?

Tiny Tim, eat your heart out!

Could be partly the reason he's so "hot". If he were an ugly white kid who couldn't sing nor dance, would he still be so popular?

I don't think it is race related. Last year there was that ugly white kid who sang Madonna's Like a Virgin horrifically. That was all they played on the best of the worst shows last year. He didn't acheive the level of success (if you want to call it that :)) of William Hung, but he wasn't as likeable as Hung is either. The Like a Virgin kid was kind of freaky with his "dancing" and his singing was well below that of Hung's.

If you look at the actual competition you can see that america as a whole likes to root for underdogs and those who take a chance and act a bit goofy. The only reason John Peter Lewis is still in the competition is because of his akward flailing dancing in the perliminary round that earned him america's vote into the final 10. He can't sing that well either (although he is leagues above Hung), but he keeps advancing in the competition.

Come on folks, William Hung is a novelty act.

There is a long history of novelty acts in American popular music, some of which (like the aformentioned Tiny Tim) have done suprisingly well.

that article got to be too long, but it just goes to show that some people will buy whatever crap they play on the radio or decide to sell... and also that they don't have to just keep putting out cookie cutter acts like Brittney, Simpson, Aguilera that are all the same. I mean, is it racism that the talentless and ugly Flava Flav or Juvenile sold heaps of records - enough for them to afford to buy all of that bling?

Kind of funny since Emil Guillermo makes a huge deal about his being Filipino American. He's constantly harping about it.

That clown could find something wrong with someone ordering vanilla ice cream or preferring their milk un-homogenized. I've had the unfortunate opportunity of watching and listening to him for quite some time.
