American Idol - 3/30/04 - "Motown Night"
It's Motown Night! This would seem to favor folks like George and Fantasia. Jasmine will need to reinvent herself before she can do well here, but she'll always get more votes than Camile, who, hopefully, has finished passing her stone.
Any song predictions? I'd like to see Pen Salesman do Aretha Franklin's Respect. I'd also like to see LaToya go beyond the "A" page of the song choice list before selecting one.
Who do you think will do well? Who will flail wildly on the stage, well, besides JPL? Who will have their automated auto-dialers ready to go?
The Finalists
Amy Adams - 24 (Bakersfield, CA)
Previous songs: "Power of Love", "You Make Me Feel Brand New", "Sin Wagon" (Country Night)

I'm gonna get shit for saying this, but I do find it awfully shitty that 2 of the first three weeks have included genre's that are notoriously african-american dominated (soul & motown). It'd be nice to have the first few rounds be more neutral genres.
Does anybody honestly believe that LaToya, Jennifer, George, or Fantasia will be in the bottom three after motown night?
Bottom 3 predictions, without even hearing a song:
John Stevens
Diana DeGarmo
Camile Velasco
with Camile finally getting the boot.

Bottom 3:
Jennifer Hudson (Diana fans will respond to her recent Bottom 3)
John Stevens
Camile Velasco
Bye, Camile
And I agree, Motown two weeks after "Soul" is really cheap.

I would love a "Monster Ballad" week.
"And here's John Stevens with 'Sister Christian.'"
Motorin', scooby-dooby-doo, what's your scooby-doo?
Something something Mr. Right...

One other comment:
Is it just me or has Randy Jackson become even *more* annoying on American Idol 3 than in the past? It's like there's a race between him and Sportscenter's Stuart Scott to see who can sound the most incoherently urban on national TV.

I love "King of the Road" and thought his version was a disaster. It was a good pick for his "style," but that's about it.
There was a crooner dude last year who was a lot better, but he didn't even make the top 32. Maybe it was because he looked like a chipmunk?

Still - The Commodores?
Ben - Michael Jackson?
Isn't She Lovely?
Maybe "Signed, Sealed, Deli....." Oh, wait. That's "Soul".
Heck, John Fogerty could do "Heard it through the Grapevine"

Didn't the crooner guy from last year look like he just got done auditioning for "American Heavy Metal Idol"?
I, too, love "King of the Road" (probably one of my top 10 country songs of all time) and didn't think he butchered it at all. It wasn't "holy shit, this guy's awesome" but it was just respectable to me. A 6 out of 10 or so.
I just hope that Amy keeps going onward. I think she's one of the 2-3 people currently in the running who can pull off any genre.

Sometimes the categories/themes are dictated by the schedule of the guest judge(s), so that's probably why Motown night is coming so close to Soul night 2 weeks ago.

And I, for one, would love to see one round be "hard rock/heavy metal". I think people underestimate how difficult that genre is to do well. Certainly just as valid a category as country or soul. Heck, you should just do a "Heavy Metal American Idol".

Agreed on how difficult other genres are to do well. I have a decent voice and could sing pop tunes (in my range) all day long with relative ease, but what many metal artists do I find to be terribly difficult.

I would love to see a punk night...
They could sing "Holiday in Cambodia", "London Calling", "TV Party", "In My Eyes", "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker", etc.
Man that would be sweet.
