It's not.

It's about the life of a guy who happens to be the head of a mob.

In that life, just like any life, there's work drama and there's family drama. There's crazy times and there's quiet times.

The show is called The Sopranos--not The Whackings

Agreed! I've enjoyed every episode this season so far...

Did you guys see where Adriana is going to be Joey's sister on the friends spinoff?

David Strathairn.

Here's a few movies I recall him being in:

The River Wild
L.A. Confidential
The Firm
He's also a regular John Sayles character, so he's in lots of his movies.

I think he played Eddie Cicotte in Eight Men Out as well.

I thought this episode was the best of the year.

The Feech conclusion was brilliant. Tony couldn't whack Feech! After all, Tony even shed a tear when he knew he had to be taken care of. The card game where everyone is laughing at Tony's jokes and then the last flashback where they zoom on Feech's scowling face. AWESOME!

The whack-hungry got their fill in the beginning with Lorraine. I'm sure NY will turn into massive whackings for all the naysayers.

The car heist was excellent. "They left all the American cars." "And you laughed at me when I said to keep the Regal." or whatever the line was....

As far as AJ, I can't stand him and his scenes but last night was hysterical. The party scenes and then the two kids left behind. Very funny. They NEED to show what happens to AJ because the divorce will only drive AJ to the family business.

kvrdave 03-29-04 11:16 AM

I loved it. Those that think it was slow...I understand your pain. I just started watching this year, but watched all the seasons on DVD leading up to this. I would watch 4-6 episodes a night. They are all about this slow, but if you watch a bunch in a row, you watch now and hunger for more becuase there is still so much left to see. I can handle that.

Also, I think the whack hungry probably are looking for something that is less truthful. This is probably closer to the truth than anything else about the "business" Whackings are probably avoided at all costs.

Patman 03-29-04 11:24 AM

AJ's a wuss. Remember his scream when he saw the bear in the opening episode?

Mourn 03-29-04 11:35 AM

Good episode... made me uncomfortable, but then that is sort of the point of the show, isnt it?

Shannon Nutt 03-29-04 11:35 AM

You know you've been out of high school a long time when...

AJ scores a 975 (or something close to that) on his SATs and that's considered dismal? When I was in high school (in the 80's) this would be in the top 20 percent or so of all students. Only the gifted kids and honor roll students managed to get up over 1000.

If someone scored a 1200 or better, they'd be the talk of the town...now it seems like that's a starting point for college enrollment.

BlackCapTen 03-29-04 12:11 PM

Hilarious episode. Whenever they showed AJ's naked face w/out eyebrows it made me laugh hysterically.

Wow! When were you in school? ;) Actually, I think they rolled up the scoring system for the SAT 5 or so years so the average score became 100 pts higher.

The end scene. Its faded very fast. I thought it was Carmella opening the doors to a gutted house but my wife said not. Was it gutted or what?

I thought it tied in with Tony's "no more Mr. Nice Guy" line at the end...

It seemed like the house was normal, to me.

wahoojeff 03-29-04 01:06 PM

What about the previews for next week's episode? Who do you think it was on their knees at the end getting offed?

PeMo 03-29-04 01:32 PM

Great episode. Two great one's in a row... this show is rolling right now. Sad to see Feech go so soon, though.

We'll probably find out in season 6. ;)

David Straithairn was also the blind guy in Sneakers - great performance.

Normal, but she's suffering major empty nest syndrome now. She'll be banging David Strathairn soon.
That's the kind of whacking I want to see. http://charliegoose.homestead.com/files/poundit.gif

i don't know what to think of the Sopranos this year, things are happening and enough is happening to keep me intrested. The episode was alright, nothing earth shaking, im my opinion. It seem like they are building up for something big this year but if nothing happens i won't be shocked

It was her going into an "empty nest" (i.e. no kids, no husband, just her). The flashback to AJ driving the tricycle down the road should have been a clue as to the allusion that Carm is about to realize she has no one now. The place wasn't gutted, it was just "empty" from the mental side of things.

As for someone saying the people that weren't in last night's show. Adrianna was in it, she came in and asked if the guys wanted a drink and told Tony he should have a sandwich or soemthing because he didn't look so good. Granted, it was short, but she was in the episode.

I thought I heard the score being in the 500's. It could be my hearing, but that's what I remember and I'm sticking with it! :)

He had 500 something in one section and 400 something in the other section. You had to add them together.

I'm loving this season so far. Its just been a mellow season in terms of action, but honestly, you're not supposed to tune in for whackings.

costanza187 03-29-04 06:42 PM

I thought it was a very good episode...for me it is hard to watch this stuff one week at a time.. seems like 1 hour isnt enough, I want to watch it like 3 eps at a time.

Do you people honestly believe some of us think this season (sofar) and last season of Sopranos have been crap because there are hardly any people getting killed? I keep reading people say "this show is not about whackings blah blah blah" I find that funny since there has been at least ONE KILLING in every episode sofar. How about the preview for next week? Another killing! This season has been dull because nothing interesting is happening. Its the same shit over and over. The show is getting too damn repetitive . There is only so much bitching you can listen to from Carmela and Tony before you're telling them to shut up already.

I think it's great. It adds a new dimension to Tony's character since he is not used to being told what to do. I am interested to see what happens between Carmela and A.J.'s counselor, too. Tony's reaction should be good after he finds out. He did make the gay comments when the ranger was at the house checking for the bear and staring at Carmela. Great season so far.

forgot about that...could've been a coincedence that she said that, but then last week, it was Uncle Junior and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Clever, these Sopranos writers -wink-

Chew 03-30-04 06:17 AM

I'm certainly enjoying this season more than last and don't consider it repetitive at all. The Soprano family dynamic is continuing it's evolvement this season and it's fun to watch.

Shuki 03-30-04 08:10 AM

I liked last weeks ep better than this one. However this was still a solid episode and all in all much better than last season imo. I'm still laughing at Paulies "he jumped out of the tree and came at me with a chainsaw, I gotta protect myself" comment rofl. But honestly, I went back this week and started watching season one again too. I'm up to like 105 and damn! that was some real sopranos! So much better than anything last year and even this year really. Maybe it was just the fact of the kids realizing who their dad was? Meadow and Tony talking in college or the way A.J. looked at his dad in new light at the funeral of Jackie only to see his DAD smile and wink at him. Not a mob boss necessarily but just his dad to him...

I think Tony's being "naive" about A.J. is pretty spot on. He knows he's a teenage kid and is going to push the limits and be into trouble. He'll one day take his spot in the family business I'm sure.

At any rate I'll no doubt continue to watch with enthusiasm but I doubt we'll get to "see" a lot of the action on the NY side but rather "hear" about it.

And feech ain't no dummy. he's got to know that he was set up...

Hurry up and get here 4/4 :)

Charlie Goose 03-30-04 08:24 AM

As someone who didn't really care for a lot of Season 4, I think this year has been very good so far.
Even though "The Sopranos" is a great show, there have been some clunkers in every season. Remember the Massive G plot from S1, and Chris' foray into filmmaking from S2?

With Feech gone, does this mean the gardener gets his territory back? :)

das Monkey 03-30-04 08:43 AM

I'm a little shocked at some of the people complaining about the show...this is the tone they've set for four years now - why would you expect differently?

We go through this every season it seems. I don't know what people expect.

Rypro 525 03-30-04 09:04 AM

yeah, every season starts out slow right?

Rypro 525 03-30-04 09:06 AM

there are a lot of internet and radio rumors going around that
Spoiler:
Adriana is the one who gets whacked next week, and the thing on hbo's website with her not having trouble with the schedule and Joey is bull shit

HistoryProf 03-30-04 10:03 AM

can someone tell me who the guy is playing the character in charge during the Lorraine scenes this week and last? Obviously he's a veteran of mafia roles, but I'm having a hard time placing him exactly. He's had that same square gray hair-do for 15 years I think ;)

dek 03-30-04 10:56 AM

Spoiler:
My take on the previews.

Christopher drives up, gets out of the car, and unloads on Adrianna. He was clearly upset when he was shooting. Somehow he finds out she's the informant. Then at the end, Tony has to whack Christopher.

Rypro 525 03-30-04 11:17 AM

dek, i'd leave the "my take on the prieviews" unspoiled so people wouldn't think you have seen the episode.

Are you talking about Phil Leotardo? He's played by Frank Vincent, who's been bouncing around the movie industry for a couple of decades.

He probably will figure it out, but he was dumb enough to get set up in the first place. Unfortunately for him, Christopher and the other guy played him like a fiddle...

Rewatched it last night. Hilarious exchange:
Carmella: "And to think those two boys will proabably grow up never knowing their father's sperm was smuggled out of prison for Nancy to conceive..."
Tony: "It was the least I could do."
GREAT stuff...
