How is the Showtime show "Soul Food?"

Anyone watch it or have watched it? I know it's on DVD and am considering renting it, but wanted to know what others thought of it?

The other night this came on after "The L Word" and I had never seen it before. For some reason I started watching it and I got really interested in it, just from the one episode I saw. I liked it so much I was considering also getting the first season at some point (although right now I have too many unwatched TV DVDs.)

I had a real difficult time getting into it, largely because it lacks the heart of the film IMO. But it's certainly a good show and worth checking out, but definitely a "rent before you buy" kind of thing.

Thanks guys. Das, do you think you couldn't get into it because you didn't see it from the very start? Or did you actually see it from episode 1?

Also, how many eps did you watch in total?

Started at episode 1, watched most of the first season, and lost track of it after that, just catching an episode here and there. Keeping track of Showtime series is hard enough for shows that I love, let alone those that I'm only mildly interested in. I've always figured I'd give it another chance sometime in the future, but I never got around to it.

The target audience for this show is those who are frustrated with the lack of realistic black families on television. While not really a spectacular show, Soul Food does achieve this mission pretty well. For a lot of people, that's enough, and there's certainly nothing wrong with the series; for me, though, I just didn't care for the characters as much as I did in the film (which admittedly isn't spectacular either), and I didn't find the stories particularly compelling, so I just lost interest. You may feel differently. Hell, I may feel differently if I watch it again.

Give it a shot. You may like it. It shouldn't be too hard to catch an ep on Showtime to see if it's your thing.

I watched the first few seasons in their entirety, but lost interest after the car-wreck cliffhanger. I actually thought that one of the main characters would have been killed off, but instead, everything just went back to how it used to be which made it less intriguing.

I still give a current episode a look or two. Mostly because of Nicole Ari Parker. Good actress and mighty beautiful.

This is the last season from what I heard right?

Yeah, that's what their ads have been saying.
