Universal Hints Firefly Movie is a Go
Wasn't sure which forum to post this in, because it's a movie from a tv show:
Universal Hints Firefly Movie is a Go Source: Andrew Monday, February 23, 2004 The Cinescape, Fireflyfans and Fireflymovie websites all have discovered signs of life in a Firefly movie at Universal Pictures which Joss Whedon has already written the script for. The studio has quietly added 'Serenity' to the Coming Soon section on the its official website, which is the working title for the film and the name of the crew's vessel. The studio has also already registered the Serenitymovie.com domain name. The first meeting on the film apparently took place the second week of February and they are targeting a May production start for the big screen version. Thanks to 'Andrew' for the alert. http://www.comingsoon.net/news.php?id=3609 |

Here's hoping it does well enough for them to bring back the series to TV!

that's great news. just today i was wondering if it was ever going to get made.
i miss that show especially after seeing Morena Baccarin (Inara) on a deodorant commercial a couple of days ago... |
why does universal have this and not fox?
|
I never really got into the show, but damn if I wont throw down 5 matinee dollars to see Jewel Staite on the big screen.
|
Here's hoping HBO picks this up as a series. I think that with less episodes per season Joss could really make an excellent show and write more episodes himself. Maybe 16-18 eps.

kick ass.

Universal bought the rights to Firefly from Fox not too long ago after Joss pitched the movie idea to them.

A Firefly thread without a pic of The Companion  is just not acceptable.

I did see the deodorant commerical, but I think that it was shot before Firefly. It has been airing forever in Canada...

Plus commercial work isn't exactly a bad paycheck. I did a commercial a few years ago that ended up grossing me $10,000+ airing on national cable for about a year. If this commercial is airing long-term on network broadcasts in two countries?...she's doing okay. :)

Whedon's 'Serenity' greenlit
U moves forward on sci-fi spinoff Universal Pictures has greenlit "Serenity,'' the feature film based on Joss Whedon's Fox TV series "Firefly,'' which was canceled in late 2002 after just 11 episodes. Deals are in place for Whedon to direct and for the original cast of the TV show to reprise their roles. Pic, budgeted in the mid-eight figures, is skedded for a June start and should be ready for a 2005 release. After Fox pulled the plug on "Firefly," Whedon struggled to continue the project, speaking with other nets and cablers about the skein, then finally turning to studios about a feature version. U acquired the feature rights from Fox last fall. Whedon said the pic will be released under the title "Serenity" to give it some distance from the TV version. "It was important that people understand that the movie isn't the series," he said. "The movie is bigger, more epic than anything you can do in a series." To that end, he said he went out of his way while penning the "Serenity" script to make sure that it is accessible to auds who never tuned into "Firefly." "You're not going to bring people into a movie if you're explaining all the time what happened before," Whedon said. Series was a space oater set 500 years in the future, tracking the journeys of the crew aboard the Serenity. Forthcoming pic is set about six months after the TV show left off, and centers on two passengers on board the ship who attract trouble to the crew. The studio has closed a deal with Nathan Fillion to return as Capt. Malcolm Reynolds. Other original cast members Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher and Summer Glau are also in place. Barry Mendel is producing the pic. Chris Buchanan of Mutant Enemy, Whedon's shingle, and Mendel exec Alissa Tager are exec producing. Overseeing the project for U is vice chair Mary Parent. Source: Variety |

If Alan Tudyk and Ron Glass aren't signed yet that doesn't neccessarily mean they won't be in the movie. Hopefully they're still working out their contracts or the article left their names out mistakenly.
