I have to agree with the Utahn, I think that APN read a little too much into the 'I'm American' line.

Actually it was Jesus who got 70,000 more votes than his brother.

Call it what you want. I played back the clip three times on the Replay after first seeing it to make sure I didn't hear it wrong. I don't consider myself over-sensitive to mostly anything. I was just shocked at he blatant nature of the delivery when seeing it. I was amazed the producers even showed it.

There was no tone of sarcasm or humor in his delivery...he said it straight and serious. If it was a joke, it just didn't play that way.

As for how it played to the voters, you're probably right. But at the same time, most of them probably didn't even pay attention to it. They were more interested in hearing the auditions and the judges comments. The pre-interview stuff was likely largely ignored by most viewers as filler. At least that is what I've found when discussing this with people I work with.

Does that make me ultimately right? Maybe not. But I'm willing to bet that it would rub a lot more people the wrong way if they were to see it highlighted now and if shown in the context of the high percentage of non-white Americans who auditioned in LA.

I started a new thread/poll in Other to discuss the "I'm an American" thing:

I agree.

Personally, I wouldn't call him a bigot seeing as the comment he made completely went past me without me noticing. If anything he may be ignorant but I wouldn't say a bigot.

As American Idol proves...Americas can handle a chunky girl (Kelly Clarkson), but NO ONE likes a frump (Lisa Loobner)

ChefWinduAZ 02-19-04 11:11 AM

I have to say the fact that Lisa got screwed over makes me wonder if it was a case of America hating Tuesday's episode so much that they refused to vote or that people really thought he was better than her, which completely boggles the mind.

DaveNinja 02-19-04 11:29 AM

Who would want an American Idol winner who was over weight? It would never happen...

Patman 02-19-04 11:37 AM

Well, if 70,000 voted for a Roman brother, you have to wonder what gets into the people who call to vote, don't you?

beecee24 02-19-04 03:14 PM

Are you kidding? What quality does Matt have that sets him apart from Camile? He might have sang a little better than her during this round, but that doesn't make up for one thing, looks. This is American Idol folks, if you are that ugly, you better have a voice like Ruben or Clay.

If anyone shouldn't have advanced it was Camile. She has a weak voice and bad stage presense. Matt and Lisa should have been the top two from this group.

I don't think Matt is a bigot. I believe he just meant that he was an "Idol" short of qualifying. He was halfway there being an "American".

I'm not following you. Everytime Camile sings it looks like she smelled a fart. Very attractive...not!!

As for his looks, he's grunters type I'm sure and he can sing. Overall he was better than any of the other singers that night.

MJKTool 02-19-04 04:38 PM

Camile does have a nice singing voice, but it just seems very, very weak. Its like she has no power in her vocals at all. Very strange. I was cringing at some of her parts, not that they sounded horrible, but rather seemed very forced...if that makes sense.

I never said they recorded it first. They re-recorded it and did a great job. I like both their version and the original. Go West made it a little jazzy and soulful.

I see Lisa making it in as a Wildcard. As soon as I heard her sing a few notes, I thought she was a contender.

I guess its a racial thing then.

TheBang 02-19-04 05:58 PM

There's 12 finalists, right? So only 8 are chosen from the current round of performances. How do the remaining 4 get selected? Are some of them Judge's choices and some Wild Card choices? How does America decide on the Wild Cards or who to vote for in the Wild Card selection? Is there a performance for the Wild Card selection?

TheBang 02-19-04 07:12 PM

nm. I found the answer in one of the earlier AI threads.

The final number is 12, that is correct. However, the four wildcards are a bit different than you described it. Here is how it worked last year:

Each of the judges chose 4 wildcards from any phase of the show. Most of them came from the final 32, but at least one (Carmen, who went on to the final 12) was eliminated earlier.

The 12 wild cards perform, and America votes. The winner of the votes makes the final 12. Additionally, each judge gets to pick 1 wildcard to also go to the final round. Last year, America's "wild card" pic was Clay Aiken.

beecee24 02-19-04 07:49 PM

Hey, if both singers aren't that great(I think everyone can agree on that), I rather look at a cute chick, than a fat balding guy with a so so singing voice.

ps. I don't think either have a chance on winning the thing.
