Syndies 'Hollywood Squares,' 'Pyramid' Get the Boot
By Brian Ford Sullivan
CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- Two more syndicated series were added to the 2003-04 season casualty list this week as stations that carry Sony Pictures Television's "Pyramid" and King World Productions' "Hollywood Squares" were informed both series will not return next season.
The duo join "The John Walsh Show," "Crossing Over With John Edward" and "The Wayne Brady Show," all of whom were canceled in recent weeks. It's not clear when exactly production will halt on new episodes of either series.
The news is particularly surprising for "Pyramid" which was up 6% in year-to-year comparisons for the first week of January (1.9 household rating). Coincidentally, NBC announced earlier this week "Pyramid" would be featured on the February 5 episode of
Nevertheless it's widely believed the sophomore series is being shuffled away for newer offerings as Sony will be pitching "Life & Style" and "Pat Croce: Moving In" this weekend at the 41st annual NATPE convention.
On the flip side the news wasn't much of a surprise for "Squares," which has been languishing since the exit of executive producer Whoopi Goldberg after its fourth season.

I would endure a decade of suck, if it meant the end of reality shows..
I am truly that sick of 'em and the pseudo-"celebrities" that they churn out.
Hell, I would even start watching the Sci-Fi Channel again..

Thank goodness pyramid is done. I heard it did poorly in our ratings, but we couldn't just drop it because we're bound by contract, so we shoved it to 1:30-2am. It won't be missed. And we air hollywood squares too, I am not a fan, but it is 1,000,000,000,000 times better than reality crap, imho. But my opinion is unimportant, I just air the stuff. A lot of senior citizens will miss hollywood squares though.

Wow, I didn't know about any of these shows listed getting axed. I kinda liked the Wayne Brady show & John Walsh show, but didn't like any of the other ones. I too am suprised that Family Feud is still on the air. Can't stand it since Al took over...
