Joss Whedon, Buffy and Toy Story.
 

I don't know if this is common knowledge or not, but everytime my 3 yr old watches Toy Story it cracks me up to see that Joss Whedon wrote the Screenplay.

Where is the common thread between Buffy, Angel and Woody?:)

He was one of several writers for the film.

Well, ummm, no kidding, I just said I knew he was involved in Toy Story - I was hoping for some comical banter :)

he wrote the music and lyrics for some or all of the songs.

He also wrote the line in the first X Men where Storm says "Do you know what happens to a toad that gets struck by lightening? Same as anything else."

Now, it gets villified as the worst line in the movie, and one of the worst lines ever, but I read an interview where Whedon says it was delivered wrong. Instead of the evil sorceress reading Berry gave it (Whedon referenced Desdemona which I didn't recognize), it was supposed to be delivered flat.

Try it sometime, play that scene in your head, with sound FX and all, and when you get to that point, imagine Storm saying it very bored. Very matter of fact and offhand like. It works a lot better.

Hard to believe Singer didn't catch that though.


As for Toy Story, Buffy was always about growing up and accepting responsibilty, and Toy Story was very much a film about accepting someone different from you, and learning that they may have strengths and weaknesses that complement your own.

And I enjoy Alien: Resurrection. I've probably watched it more times than any other Alien flick.

Singer apologized for that line in the commentary saying he just didn't get the joke. Such is life.

I'm more interested in knowing what Whedon was thinking with the Alien Resurrection script (sorry, it's just not my favorite film). Much to my dismay my disc 8 was damaged so I'll be waiting awhile.

Yea, well, I didn't care for it either. I mean when you estblish the fact that the heroine landed in pit of boiling, roasting hot, lava or whatever, she's pretty much toast and there ain't much lef to mess with. That one sucked to for me. I loved the first two though.

I'm not all that impressed at what Singer has done with X-men. I wish he would stop now. I'd trust Whedon more than Singer and now that I understand how the line should have been delivered, it makes more sense.

Regarding "Alien: Resurrection," I would've liked the movie much better without Ripley in it. Get rid of her and that stupid human/alien hybrid at the end, and it's a much better movie. I really sort of like the "space pirates" and the military dipshits.

And regarding that toad/lightning line from "X-Men," just imagine it being used by Buffy on an episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." It sort of works when you think of it in that context. Problem is, Berry blew it, and Singer didn't know how to use it. (Of course, being a lifelong reader of the comics, it's not really something Storm would've said in the first place...)

Maybe that toad line was delivered poorly, but it's still not funny and still a poor line. but granted the way it was done in the film was...even worse.

I've never watched Whedon's television work, but his film work has always been lacking. And the incessant complaining I hear because of the poor way his writing comes out makes me not really like him. i've heard all this stuff about how Whedon hates Alien Resurrection because they slaughtered his script. While I agree the director wasn't right for the project, I did read his script and it the movie was pretty faithful, save for dropping the line where Wal-mart took over the company. Seriously, he does a lot of complaining, but his writing for movies has never impressed. And if anything his script for Resurrection was the first and foremost problem with that movie. No matter what you did, that movie was going to suck.

I'm not bashing Whedon...his Buffy is incredibly successful and that's to his credit. I just wish I knew why some high profile projects get thrown at him when...nothing in the films he's workedo n really turned out well. (save for Toy Story, but like 50 writers worked on that one).

I want to see a movie that Joss wrote and directed. All of the Buffy, Angel and Firefly episodes that he writes and driects are always the best
