CBS puts 'Handler' on chopping block
Future uncertain after network cuts order

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) --"The Handler" has lost its touch.

CBS cut its production order for the drama, which stars Joe Pantoliano as an FBI agent coaching a team of undercover agents, after it slipped in the ratings in its 10 p.m. EST Friday time slot.

Of the 16 episodes shot, a dozen have aired so far. CBS has scheduled one more original episode to air on January 16, followed by two repeats.

The show's future is uncertain after that. No replacement has been announced.

Pantoliano, who received an Emmy Award last year for HBO's "The Sopranos," saw his CBS drama begin strong in the fall but falter, especially after NBC moved "Third Watch" opposite it.
Bummer. I really enjoyed this show. If CBS pulls it, I no longer have a reason to tune into their channel except for the occassional Price is Right...

Red Dog 01-13-04 11:55 AM

Yeah - we already discussed this a little in The Lyon's Den thread. It wasn't great but I thought it was a decent show. I probably won't miss it very much, but was nice to have in that slot.

Of course you know what will most likely replace it? CSI & CSI:Miami reruns.

Since you like FBI shows, Morf, you should watch Without a Trace. Granted, it is a narrower focus, but I feel it to be a superior show.

rkndkn 01-13-04 12:16 PM

Too bad. I enjoy the show. When CBS earlier gave it a full-season order, I thought it was safe. :(

Jadzia 01-13-04 01:08 PM

I really enjoy this show. Although, I currently have 3 unwatched episodes sitting in the Tivo, so I'm not sure what that says.

I guess it's a show I enjoy, but I also wouldn't be heart-broken if they cancelled it (sort of like American Dreams). Didn't I hear that NBC also cut short the American Dreams order?

Yes and that one really pissed me off. That is one of my top-5 favorite shows.

I'm fuming. I really like this show mainly because I think the actors are very good and have given us some great characters. Crap like Simple Life stays on and good shows like this go down the toilet.

My thoughts exactly. I enjoy(ed?) the show and the cast is excellent. Anna Belknap is totally cute. :)

movieking 01-13-04 04:02 PM

I like the show but don't love it. I also have unwatched episodes kicking around. Not a must see show, but when I get a chance, I like to watch it.

elektra 01-13-04 04:19 PM

Hmm, I guess I'm the only one hanging out here that really enjoyed it.

Patman 01-13-04 04:29 PM

I liked it at the start, but I now have 3 unwatched episodes on my ReplayTV, and don't have any urgency to watch them in the near future. I guess the premise was promising, but I always had that deja vu feeling when I watched later episodes.

This sucks. liked the show alot, especially Anna. :)

CBS Dumps 'Handler' During Sweeps
By Brian Ford Sullivan

CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- The future of CBS' "The Handler" continued to get murkier today as the network has announced it will pre-empt both previously scheduled airings of the series during February sweeps.

The two installments, the show's 15th and 16th episodes this season, constitute the last of its production order. Repeats of CBS' various dramas are expected to fill the Friday, 10:00/9:00c hour after tonight's broadcast, beginning with a repeat of "Cold Case" next week.

It's not clear if and when "The Handler" will return to the Eye's schedule. For those interested, here's the official descriptions of the final two installments, taken from CBS' original press releases:

Spoiler:
LILY’S UNDERCOVER MISSION TO INFILTRATE A MOB FAMILY LEADS TO A MARRIAGE PROPOSAL, ON "THE HANDLER," FRIDAY, FEB. 6

"The Wedding Party" -- Lily’s undercover mission to infiltrate a mob family leads to a marriage proposal from the boss’s son, on THE HANDLER, Friday, Feb. 6 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Rob Bailey directed the episode written by Jim Kouf and Alan DiFiore.

Joe assigns Lily to an undercover mission in which she must get close to the mob boss’s son. She succeeds at gaining his trust and the son quickly falls in love with her and proposes marriage. With Joe posing as the father of the bride and Marcy in place as the wedding planner, it’s looking like Lily might actually have to go through with the wedding in order for Joe to nail the mob boss and his cronies.

JOE AND HIS CREW INFILTRATE A DATING SERVICE IN ORDER TO CATCH A WOMAN SUSPECTED OF KILLING HER DATES, ON "THE HANDLER," FRIDAY, FEB. 13

Annabella Sciorra ("The Sopranos") Guest Stars

"The Big Fall" -- Joe and his agents infiltrate a dating service in order to catch a woman who is suspected of killing several of her past dates, on THE HANDLER, Friday, Feb. 13 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Leon Ichaso directed the episode written by Jim Kouf and Alan DiFiore.

Annabella Sciorra ("The Sopranos") guest stars as lethal temptress Caroline Glenwood, suspected of murdering more than one of the wealthy men she has met through dating services. Joe, posing as a potential suitor, puts his crew in place posing as dating service employees in order to stop Glenwood before she kills again.

Red Dog 01-30-04 04:37 PM

Damn - I would loved to see Annabella Sciorra as a guest star.

Patman 01-30-04 07:21 PM

Holy crap, a Gloria-Ralphie reunion? Haha!

movieking 01-30-04 08:04 PM

Tonights episode is new though, isn't it?

Patman 01-30-04 08:26 PM

That's what my ReplayTV says.

mookiemeister 01-30-04 09:04 PM

Tonight's episode is new so how come my local CBS station preempted it for some superbowl countdown show?

Supreme Sean 01-31-04 08:35 AM

Damn, this show is the only thing I watch on Fridays. It's a good show, not a great show, that is helped out by a talented cast. I really wanted to see that episode Leon Ichaso directed, too. I like his work from Miami Vice episodes and Sugar Hill.

And I agree that Anna is really cute.

movieking 01-31-04 08:37 AM

Didn't another series run a similar episode within the last year or two? A show that dealt with insurance fraud and horses? I think that it was Law & Order or CSI...

mrpayroll 03-22-04 01:19 PM

Well it looks like it is official

Joey Pants Close to Donning Scrubs for CBS Pilot
(Monday, March 22 09:31 AM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Emmy winner Joe Pantoliano's drama "The Handler" failed to get a handle on viewers, but CBS remains convinced that Joey Pants can be a network television star. The veteran character actor is close to signing on to co-star in the CBS pilot "Dr. Vegas."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pantoliano is in final negotiations to join Rob Lowe in the drama, which focuses on an in-house physician at a Vegas casino.

Pantoliano moved to "The Handler" after picking up a supporting actor Emmy for his work as Ralph Cifaretto on HBO's "The Handler." The hard-working actor's credits include "Risky Business," "The Matrix," "Memento" and the late, lamented series "EZ Streets."

The writer of this story needs to get his/her facts straight, though.

I really thought The Handler was going to make it, just because it was a well written show. :(

Chris

Morf 03-22-04 01:21 PM

Well, it is now official: I have no reason to watch CBS.

Joan of Arcadia!

Jadzia 03-22-04 01:33 PM

Hmm, I wonder if I should bother watching the 2 or 3 episodes I still have sitting in my Tivo or not.

Patman 03-22-04 05:16 PM

I have 4 episodes of the Handler just sitting on my ReplayTV as well...
