I love Snoopy's booooooo. "Man's Best Friend?!" And Sally's,"All I want is what's coming to me. All I want is my fair share."

I adore this special but I've always thought it ironic the anticommercialism message from Charles Shultz. Was there ever a bigger commercial whore than "Sparky" Shultz? Only Ziggy and Garfield come close. What did Peanuts ever have to do with Insurance?

I'm still trying to figure out what "Real In" is supposed to mean.
Like, man. You have to realize that this cartoon was made in 1965, so be a hipster and get with the "beat" generation.

Copasetic.

I'm surprised some groups out there haven't demanded they remove the "Linus speech" from the cartoon...I mean, heaven forbid a cartoon about a Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus actually mentions Jesus! The horror!
I always got the sense that Charles Schulz was a "good" Christian, someone who had a deep spiritual understanding of his religion that is sorely lacking in today's Christian scene that seeks only to bully and control people, and not uplift them.

As opposed to jackasses like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell that pass for Christian leaders today.

I've always kinda figured that Lucy really meant her Doctor sign to read .......

THE DOCTOR IS: REAL / IN. .....

Indicating to passing potential patrons that the "Doctor" (Lucy) was both "Real" and "In" (available for immediate consultation). :)

She simply left out the "slash" mark.

Sound reasonable?? :)

I kinda figure you must be under 30? "Real in" was indeed "real in" in the 60s.

That reminded me of a story I read about Schulz a long time ago. Somebody asked him what his favorite bible verse was, and Schulz really didn't have a favorite, so he just said one he liked (I think it was a Psalm or a Proverb). And the guy said "ah, verse so and so of book so and so. " Schultz was a little put off by this because he felt that the person had just memorized the bible without really reading it.

I read Schulz's bio several years ago. If I remember he didn't care for all the commercialism such as can be found in Garfield but he felt had to give in a little with pressure from his bosses.

Nope.....I'm far from being "under 30".

"Real in" is a 1960's term?? What does it mean? Haven't a clue. Never heard it before.

Could it equate to the ever-popular nonsensical "Word Up" of today?

Oh my gosh, people...I'm only in my 30's and I know what "Real In" means...it basically means the same thing as "hip" or "cool". As in "Man, that cat was 'real in'!"

Just for the record, "cat" doesn't mean a four-legged furball, either!

I really believe that a lot of the olderPeanuts comic strips were written by Shulz as 'sermons'. If you're interested in this subject, there is a facinating book called The Parables of Peanuts you should be able to track down in a good used bookstore.

Don't get me wrong, I adore Peanuts. I even love the last 10 years output (Rerun and Sally kill me. Rerun never gets his due as one of his best creations) but I always did find it ironic the anticommercialism message inbetween the commercials for Dolly Madison and Met Life and the zillions of other product endorsements. It's what makes me really respect Bill Waterson of Calvin and Hobbes. He never gave into the pressure and sold out.

Well, that PigPen said that I needed more security for my family.

"Hello, is this MetLife?"
"Hwaa hwaa hwaa. Hwaa hwaa hwaaaa."

Besides the aforementioned goodness, i'm surprised no one has mentioned another thing that contributes to its status as a CLASSIC:

the score by Vince Guaraldi Trio.

Brilliant!

I was going to. If you don't have the CD of the soundtrack, you should buy it. It really puts you in the Christmas mood and it reminds me of the show.

That is in my holiday music collection! :)

I really love this special.

It always gets me in the Christmas mood and I reserve it for after Thanksgiving.

I like it on the DVD because you don't have to deal with annoying commercials.

The music is so sentimental to me. Very nostalgic warm and timeless.

Special airs again Saturday, Dec 13 on ABC.

Tommy Ceez 12-08-03 11:06 AM

Hey, whats up with ABC playing promos for something called "I want a Dog for Christmas"? (The announcer says "Destined to be a new holiday classic") Is this IN ADDITION to the traditional Christmas show or are they finally kicking Jesus completly out of the holidays?

necros 12-08-03 11:23 AM

I've been hearing that there's a new charlie brown christmas movie being worked on? Something that Shultz saved and didn't want released till after he died or something like that. Is that true?

Eric F 12-08-03 11:52 AM

Well, there's always the Simpsons episode where Homer becomes a missionary.

"Save me Jeebus!"
