The Reagans (Showtime)
Well, I taped and sat through "The Reagans" and was mostly entertained.
The film last about 2 hours, 53 minutes (complete with Showtime's president giving a little speech beforehand.) It showed Nancy Reagan (Judy Davis) as being controlling of Ron especially because he could "never say no" to anyone's face. They kept the pace up and moved quickly showing the year on the screen as they were moving along. Ronald Reagan (James Brolin) looked great as far as the makeup and everything. He was slow but charismatic. They did flip through the Cold War victory very quickly but what are they gonna do. They focused on the selling arms to Iran quite a bit. It was intersting to say the least. Too bad CBS was too chicken-sh** to air it so that more people could form their own opinion. But that's the country we live in right now. |
Yeah, CBS was afraid to air the show, yet none of the networks have a problem airing movies about JFK's liaisons, etc. What a bunch of hypocrites.

The show certainly wasn't worth all the controversy...but it wasn't very good, either. I watched about 20 minutes before turning it off...Brolin's portrayal of Reagan was more a caricature than an attempt to portray the real man - it was like watching someone on Saturday Night Live trying to do an impersonation.

I heard a snippet from Leslie Moonves (president of CBS) saying that he knew the public wouldn't stand for a false characterization of Reagan and he didn't want CBS to be associated with it. For example, the people chosen to represent Barry Goldwater and Oliver North couldn't have been further from the real men. Anyway, maybe that's a discussion for 'Other' as there was a thread devoted to this. |
Censorship is a terrible thing. The movie may have stunk, but to give people like Bill O'reilly and his right wing cronies so much power is kind of scary. Show the movies, let the audience decide what is proper and not let some ANGLO WHITE CONSERVATIVES decide for you.
