Is your VCR hooked up for playback only?

I was talking to a guy at work today and I asked him how does he have his VCR set up for recording off of Dish Network anf he told me he has it hooked up for playback only-????All of my VCR's go through a tv for recording purposes.

I have three VCRs, and they are all set up to record.

Maybe the guy has a DVR hooked up, and only uses his VCR to play old tapes or something.

The thing is I don't think he knows how to hook it up thru the box.

Mine is hooked up for both recording and playback. But I can easily see how I can connect my cable directly to my TV and bypass my VCR and just feed my VCR output lines directly to TV in for playback. But this won't happen until I get another recording device. Right now my VCR is my only recording device.

Maybe he doesn't have the VCR hooked up to the Dish reciever since it only has one tuner, and thus he would be recording what he's watching.

That's assuming he would only record shows that are on at the same time, not show's he's not home to watch.

Mine has been setup strictly for playback for a long time, but I haven't used the thing in literally 2 years.

I have mine to dump off stuff from the DirecTiVo for friends, or in some cases, sans commercials, 18 30 minute cooking shows on a tape.

I have my VCR hooked up to one of my Replay-TVs so I can bump something over if I need to.

Mine is hooked up for record/playback. I haven't used it for either in about 2 years though, and I've done some rewiring on the home theater so I don't actually know if I hooked it up correctly for recording. I know playback works because I had to use the main menu to configure it again when the lights went out a few months ago.

The vcr in our living room is hooked up for playback only - I just have the rca cables going to the receiver. But the VCR in my room is set up for record/playback because sadly I have yet to buy a tivo.

What leaps to mind for me is that you should take the output cable from your digital cable box and run it to the "in" on your VCR. Then run the "out" from your VCR to your TV. You will have to keep your TV on either Channel 2 or 3 depending on the little toggle switch on the back of your VCR in order to tape from the digital cable box.
I can't imagine that you have not tried that already though.
That is the most basic way to do it.
