FOX's 'Luis' First to Get the Axe
By Brian Ford Sullivan

CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- FOX has made the first official cancellation of the 2003-04 season, as the network has given a pink slip to its freshman comedy "Luis" after four airings.

FOX plans to fill the show's Friday, 8:30/7:30c time slot with extra episodes of "Wanda at Large" this week and next, after which previously announced theatricals "The Animal" (November 14), "Dude, Where's My Car?" (November 21) and "Big Daddy" (November 28) will take over the night.

A total of 10 episodes have been produced of the comedy, leaving six installments on the shelf. Production was shut down yesterday on the 20th Century Fox Television-produced series when work was set to begin on its 11th episode.

The death of "Luis" didn't come as much of a surprise. The show's 3.6 million viewer average ranked well below the numbers of last year's Friday entries "Firefly" (5.2 million) and "John Doe" (7.5 million) after four broadcasts.

While "Luis" is the first new show to formally be canceled, fellow freshmen "The Brotherhood of Poland, N.H." on CBS, "The Mullets" on UPN and "Coupling" on NBC were all placed on hiatus in the past week or so and technically remain alive for the time being.

Can't say I'm surprised. I watched it once (as a Luis Guzman fan) and thought it was horrible.

The Asian guy speaking Spanish was just too unsettling for me... :D

does that mean Boston Public is preempted for sweeps?

Luis is a funny guy, I can't think of a movie I didn't like him in. The show sucked bananas though. Not very funny at all. The writers should be shot.

Good - now maybe he can go back to acting in good movies. (Never watched the show - sorry, it just didn't look right to me.)

I thought The Brotherhood of Poland N.H. was the first cancelled show?

Officialy, "Brotherhood" is on hiatus and has not been cancelled yet. Meaning it *could* come back. It's highly doubtful though. Same with Boomtown, Coupling, and the Mullets.

We should probably know more of what they are doing with the "hiatus" shows after sweeps.

There was a Luis?

I blinked, because I honestly don't even remember ads for the show, let alone the show itself.

I saw the ads but I didn't even know that the show began already.

4 episodes too? Crap.

Now if they are doing movies on Friday nights does that mean another DEK production just got the boot?

I made it through ten minutes then realized all of my brain cells had temporarily shut down. Luckily someone had changed the channel and thus saved my loved ones from a nasty court battle concerning my artificial life.
