NBC May Pull Struggling Shows for Sweeps

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Though NBC Entertainment President Jeff Zucker insists that it's still too early to speculate on which of his network's sagging freshman series will hit the shelf during November sweeps, industry reports suggest he may have lots of choices. "Coupling," "Whoopi" and "Happy Family" may all take a little vacation next month.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, while those new shows are the most obvious stragglers, more ambiguous performers like "Las Vegas," "Miss Match" and "Lyon's Den" may also lose time in November.

The most obvious victim could be the American version of the popular British comedy "Coupling." With ratings falling each weak, unimpressive viewer retention from lead-in "Will & Grace" and the always intriguing possibility of super-sized Thursdays hits, "Coupling" may cease to be Must-See as of Oct. 30, the first day of the sweep.
Isn't that pretty much their entire new show lineup for fallrotfl

I can't see why they're pulling Las Vegas or Lyon's Den. Those two have been doing farely well.

How many Law & Order reruns or supersized Friends can they show in a week?

Red Dog 10-13-03 06:18 PM

Law & Order 24-7.

Inverse 10-13-03 06:26 PM

I anxiously await the inevitable announcement of Law and Order: Special Janitorial Unit.

chowderhead 10-13-03 06:29 PM

I think they would put the L&O franchise on every night if they could. It is already on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays (repeats).
I look for Whoppi, Happy Family, Coupling and maybe Scrubs to be benched. supersized/repeats of Friends and W&G everwhere.
I look for Friday to be declared a disaster and L&O SVU repeats to stay through sweeps.
Ed is shaky and American Dream is faltering.
I think some of their shows should be a huge concern for NBC.
NBC may be where ABC was a few years ago.

Deftones 10-13-03 06:38 PM

why wouldn't they? they can't make up their ****ing mind about Boomtown.

das Monkey 10-13-03 06:51 PM

Why didn't I think of this before? The answer is so simple: Super-sized ... Law & Order.

I think there needs to be more show after the credits. You know, like witty remarks by Brisco on how they closed the case.

"Guess he forgot to look both ways."
"He should have packed a spare."
"Don't leave home without it."

I guess I won't have to worry about missing any good shows on NBC this Nov. then.

HistoryProf 10-13-03 10:32 PM

What is seriously depressing about this is that because it's sweeps, we're in for some "Very Special Episodes of Dateline" covering god know's what salacious bit of news (sic) that week....Bennifer....slip and slides can kill you....killer bees.....SARS.....whatever....

immortal_zeus 10-14-03 06:04 AM

I'll be seriously pissed if Las Vegas gets pulled.

That would suck. I only watch three shows on Monday and this is one of them.

NBC has not been as bad as CBS and Fox about pulling great shows, but w/ the resent hiatus of Boomtown, nothing will surprise me anymore when it comes to any of the networks.

Tom Campbell 10-14-03 07:06 AM

Mark my words, with the failure of the current batch of new NBC shows, it can't be that long until we get the announcement of yet another Law and Order series.

Or maybe they'll offer individual series to some of the other Friends cast.

lisadoris 10-14-03 07:11 AM

I don't know why people are surprised, NBC is already pulling shows out of the lineup (Boomtown anyone). I really dislike the whole idea of sweeps and wish it would just go away. The way things are going, NBC is going to have any new shows left on the schedule.

JJE-187 10-14-03 08:15 AM

I am pissed aout them pulling Coupling, but I was kinda expecting it. I don't see it lasting past this season (if that long)

Didn't Good Morning, Miami get renewed? That clearly shows that nothing is impossible. ;)

Don't pull Scrubs into this. Yes, it loses people from the Friends lead-in, but if you look at Will and Grace's ratings, there is barely a drop-off after Scrubs. Scrubs can stay in the Thursday lineup and should...it's really the only non-Friends/Will and Grace show to deserve the Thursday slot IMO.

Roto 10-14-03 01:12 PM

They pulled Scrubs during sweeps last year. According to last week's ratings Scrubs was at #13, but Will and Grace was #15, so maye they should put W&G on hiatus :P

Why are these idiots changing the channel? To watch the last half of Survivor?

 So they should keep their TV sets on NBC until after 8 p.m.? It may be hard to believe, but some folks probably watch Friends and then turn off their TV and go do something else. Plus the second half hour of Survivor is usually better than the first.

People were given so much drivel and cr*p in the post Friends slot : Cursed, Jesse, Union Square, Inside Schwartz ... plus Scrubs is not a typical comedy so some people may not enjoy it.

Ancier acknowledged that the Thursday night position following "Friends" has historically been a "walk the dog time slot," but Ancier seemed bullish about "The Steven Weber Show" (working title). Weber is good, but ex "Caroline in the City" sidekick Amy Pietz was especially good as a can't-stop-talking blind date who is sure to recur in future episodes.

from a few years back.

People are switching over to Survivor or are continuing to walk their dog. I love how the network execs. even joke about this.

As has been mentioned, some people actually turn off their TVs and read a book every now and then. :)

I know that NBC has put so much crap on in that slot over the years, 8:30 on Thursdays used to be my weekly "catch up on the dirty dishes in the sink" time.

Of course, ReplayTV has made all timeslots a moot issue with me now, but those are some reasons for the drop. A lot of people are glued to their sets once they turn them on... but not everyone.

tanman 10-15-03 10:03 AM

Then record survivor and watch NBC. Or the other way around. Or walk your dog during Friends (don't worry you'll catch the eps when they rerun it fifty million times during sweeps) but don't miss Scrubs! They hardly rerun them and it is the best sitcom on TV right now IMHO.

Red Dog 10-15-03 10:05 AM

Good news for fans of Las Vegas....NBC has picked it up for a full season.
