NBC Yanks 'Boomtown' from Lineup By Brian Ford Sullivan Props to Decker & thefutoncritic.com CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- NBC has pulled its struggling sophomore drama "Boomtown" from its Friday schedule after just two weeks on the air. The network hopes to jump start its performance on the night by returning former Friday, 10:00/9:00c time slot holder "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" to its old home, albeit in repeat form, beginning this week. In addition, the Peacock will swap the time slots of freshman dramedy "Miss Match" and "Dateline NBC" as the newsmagazine will now open the night at 8:00/7:00c. This week however, viewers can look for another rebroadcast of Bravo's "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" to fill the 8:00/7:00c hour, leading into "Miss Match" at 9:00/8:00c. All of the moves were announced via press release this afternoon. As for "Boomtown," NBC has at least four more episodes of the critically-acclaimed drama in the can. It's not clear if production resumed on the show's seventh episode this week after a two-week delay. For both of its airings, "Boomtown" has finished dead last among the three major networks in the Friday, 10:00/9:00c hour among households and adults 18-49, losing to ABC's "20/20" and CBS' "The Handler." |

Just about all of NBC's new shows are tanking so this is probably the first of many moves from them. Having Miss Match as a lead in for SVU is a real smart move. I'm sure all the people who tune in for a romance show are going to stick around for a show that deals with sexual assault and child abuse-rolleyes- At least I can save time by watching The Handler live now. :johnwoo:NBC |

NBC Studios and DreamWorks Television's critically worshipped Friday night crime drama will take an unscheduled two-week production hiatus once filming on the show's sixth episode of season two wraps later this week. Break is designed to give writers time to rethink episodes seven and eight, which had originally been linked together into an informal two-part arc. Peacock execs have asked "Boomtown" producers to make this season's segs stand-alone episodes, a request exec producer Graham Yost says he has no problem with. "A determination was made that, given the level of sampling that goes on in the fall, it was maybe better if all our (early) episodes were stand-alone... in case people didn't see the episode from a week before," he said. Yost said there was "a bit of miscommunication about the level of stand-aloneness" that led producers to think that a mini-arc for November sweeps would be OK. In the end, all parties agreed it was better to scrap the two episodes as envisioned -- at least for now -- and instead come up with two self-contained segs. "This is our shot," Yost said. "We want to make sure we get it right." |
This really sucks. Give it a decent time slot, complete creative control to the creators, and give it a chance to get word of mouth. I really hope it comes back on...

Ugh! Granted, I think SVU is a better lead-in for Boomtown and I'm happy that Miss Match is swapping time slots. All this moving around does not bode well for either show. NBC is just going to have to realize that most people don't stay home and watch TV on Friday's so just suck it up and leave the shows alone.

Really a shame. I hope they bring it back as a mid-season replacement or something. It's a shame to waste all that talent. As I've posted before, this show should have gone to HBO from the start : There are plenty of ties to HBO thanks to BoB, its challenging (original) format would have fit the HBO viewer better than NBC's, the limited run of 13-16 episodes would have created a stronger, more cohesive season one than NBC was able to put together with 22 eps, its gritty realism and dialogue would be a perfect fit for HBO Sunday night, and it's a hell of a lot better show than Carnivale.

This is too bad. I enjoyed the show, and it had some quality actors on it. I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the two guys who were also in Band of Brothers - Donnie Walhberg and what-his-name the other dude.

Neil McDonough, played David McNorris. He should have won the Emmy last month, instead he wasn't even nominated.

This is too bad, although I am happy they are moving Miss Match. That is a great show and it deserves another chance. It seems like it had too much of the same audience as the Joan of Arcadia at 8pm. I'd rather see it off Fridays altogether, but I think it might do better at 9pm than it has at 8pm.
Plus the NBC schedule was just weird, starting with an hour long light drama then flowing into Dateline, and then back into Boomtown. It seems to make more sense to put your fiction shows together than to insert a news-magazine show between them. |
