No, I know he was an officer. Sergeant Major is an enlisted rank (the highest enlisted rank, but enlisted nonetheless).

It's major, I just watched the first few episodes of Season one. And according to "Aloha Slater" he is a major. But that doesn't mean it changed later, they weren't very careful with that at times.
