threat matrix pilot 9/18 thread

I thought I'd give this a try, to see how it is (if it sucks in the first 10 min like I expect, I'll just put the friends season finale that I missed on)

B.A. 09-18-03 05:44 PM

I hope this show is better than it's name.

ClarkKentKY 09-18-03 05:58 PM

Well, its title did what it was meant to accomplish. Someone said to me last week:
"Isn't that based on the matrix movies?"

:whofart:

movieking 09-18-03 06:23 PM

I saw the pilot, and actually the best part of the show were the first five to ten minutes (you will see what I mean when you see the show). After that, it all goes downhill...

Tuan Jim 09-18-03 07:41 PM

It's really funny. I guess they filmed this quite a while back but

Spoiler:
The main villain Hambali was captured in Bangkok at least a month ago - real time. Just kinda funny considering how current they're trying to be.

Ian11 09-18-03 10:27 PM

I tried watching the first 10 minutes but Survivor Pearl Island lured me away.

I noticed one of the main "terrorists" was on Season 2 of 24. On 24 he played one of the drivers of the van with the nuclear device. Maybe they're hoping some of the magic of 24 will rub off on them.

Roto 09-18-03 10:29 PM

I'm barely paying attention. There is way too much of sitting in front of computers watching satellites, blah blah yadda yadda zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I agree the first few minutes before the credits were cool. Great production values with HDTV and surround sound, but it stands no chance against Friends and Survivor. I don't think I'll be watching it again. 24 with all it's flaws is much more entertaining.

Jeraden 09-18-03 10:38 PM

I really liked it.

ClarkKentKY 09-18-03 11:22 PM

If i can't find the time to watch 24 or MI-5, i'm not going to watch this. Especially opposite Survivor and Friends.

mrpayroll 09-18-03 11:45 PM

I enjoyed watching it and it was pretty cool how they took out the suicide bomber at the end. When they threw him and the bomb in the containment truck and it blew up and the truck kind of did a hop in the air. Pretty funny if you ask me.

This was the first program that I was able to see in OTA HDTV and it was pretty good. Of course ABC is only 720p, but the nice thing was, is that it came thru as 5.1 Dolby Digital Stereo. Some good sound effects. It's too bad I couldn't use my Tivo to watch this and FF thru the commercials. I forget what it was like to have to watch commercials! :( ;)

it's weird...I think this show might interest me, but i'm not interested enough to watch..

back in June/July I downloaded whatever ep was floating around and never got around to watching it and eventually ended up deleting it..

oh well..

hope you guys enjoyed it though..

immortal_zeus 09-19-03 01:16 AM

Well, there's an hour of my life that I'll never get back. The show sucked. They tried to do way too much too soon and it was hard to keep track of what was going on. Not to mention that it was quite boring and unrealistic.

I noticed the guy from 24 as well. Is he the only guy in Hollywood who speaks Arabic or whatever language they were using? Geez. Talk about being typecast. In this day and age of terrorism, though, I guess he has relative job security playing a terrorist.

Also, did that deaf girl remind anybody else of a grown up Avril Lavigne?

Anyway, I somehow don't see this show lasting very long against Friends (and I guess Survivor, though I don't watch the latter). I doubt I'll watch next week's episode.

First episode is ok. I will tune in for a few more episodes to see if it gets better.

Only 720p? Isn't 720p considered a higher resolution than 1080i?

About the show, I was disappointed. That whole videoediting sequence was beyond ridiculous. Good to know gay/jock from Buffy got some work after the show. Also I recognize the chick from the Vampire: the Masquerade show. I always thought she was hot, but that whole divorcee agents thing was very irritating. I may watch again, but I don't have any high hopes.

I've certainly always thought so.

As for the show: m'eh.

javanut 09-19-03 09:29 AM

Any series whose first episode shows a suicide bomber getting blown to bits in the back of a bomb truck is all right with me. I liked it. Definite potential here, especially to develop the characters as the season progresses.

Like that the show moves fast and doesn’t beat us over the head with the plot. There were a couple of moments where I was a little lost, but I thought that was a positive of the show – makes you pay attention.

Roto 09-19-03 09:39 AM

I quit paying attention after the guy called his ex-wife Mrs. Kilmer  I didn't really give the show a fair chance, but I figure ABC didn't either by putting it in that timeslot. They should've at least moved the debut up a week so it wasn't going up against Survivor. That show's going to die quicker than the guy in the containment truck.

movielib 09-19-03 10:02 AM

The only things I liked were the opening sequence, the guy blowing up in the truck and seeing "Dixie Cousins" from The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.

Otherwise it seems like The Agency except with more action but less interesting.

Well shows you how much I know. Isn't the higher the number, the better? ;)

Well you have to remember that 720p means 720 lines on the screen at one time. While 1080i means 540 alternating lines. It's why 480p is better than 480i, although these would be closer. I don't think I'm explaining it right, I think someone here who's more knowledgable could give you a better answer.

I did not watch Threat Matrix but I wonder why ABC did not just pick up The Agency. It was a borderline show in the ratings, but why not go with that instead of taking a shot in the dark with an all new show.

Kal-El 09-19-03 11:26 AM

Forgot to watch it, but if it's up against the farewell season of Friends, this is a no-brainer for me.

goLUCKY 09-19-03 03:13 PM

Is it exactly like MI-5?

If MI-5 sucks, then yeah.

Actually, I heard MI-5 was pretty good, so it's probably nothing like MI-5. :p

I think that MI-5 is bangin' and I haven't seen TMatrix yet.

Can anyone compare them?

How do you put a positive spin on a 5.1 rating/8 share and an average of 7.6 million viewers? By emphasizing that no matter how mediocre those numbers look, they're way, way better than anything you had going last year on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET.
Despite being critically savaged, "Threat Matrix" boosted ABC by 29 percent in both viewers and adults 18-49 over last year's average for the house. The show's 18-49 rating of 2.1 was actually good enough to top the numbers for FOX's "Temptation Island." The premiere was higher rated than either "Monk" or "Dinotopia" when they premiered in the same time slot last season.

Plus, it stands to reason that several of those electricity-free Isabel sufferers probably would have tuned into "Threat Matrix" as well. However, it remains to be seen how well the drama will stand up against new episodes of "Friends" once they begin next week.

Which one is better than the other is a controversial matter. 1080i has more lines of resolution, but it's interlaced.

In practice, they are both pretty comparable to one another. 1080i usually looks better than 720p on 1080i-native displays, but 720p usually looks better than 1080i on 720p-native displays.

Really, they're both good so there's no use complaining about either one.

theedge 09-20-03 08:47 AM

As someone who never has watched Friends or Survivor...

 I liked this show a lot.

B.A. 09-21-03 02:23 PM

I didn't think it was too bad. There was enough going on to stretch it out into a two-hour premiere, imo. I'll tune in again, at least for awhile.

huzefa 09-22-03 05:12 PM

Seems like they're going to have a lot of one-sided plots on this show. Are they going to show another sleeper-cell AlQaeda attack next week too? They should have had the guts in this pilot to show the terrorist actually succeed (like they do on MI-5 from time to time). That way, when the terrorist does actually get his come-uppance, it's more entertaining.

Patman 09-22-03 05:17 PM

The deaf girl was cute.

Threat Matrix is no MI-5, IMO. It's ok but I'm not going out of my way to watch it, especially if some other new shows this fall are more interesting. When it's on doesn't matter to me because of my 2 DTivos, but I agree this thing's dead quick in that timeslot.

PacMan2006 09-24-03 08:19 AM

Guys,

I never saw the guy get blown up in the back of a truck or anything. The opening shot of "TM" for me was the guys playing video games and bees coming into the compound...I guess I missed something?

At the end, they grab the terrorist, break his hand and I thought his neck. They bring him outside the building, where the bomb squad vehicle that is suppose to contain the bomb explosion is. He comes to and one of the guys socks him, cause time is running out. They throw him into the vehicle and run away as fast as they can. The guy/bomb explodes and the, probably 5 ton truck, hops into the air a couple of feet off the ground and falls back down. It was actually quite funny and I had a good laugh. They then went back to the truck and took a quick look inside the truck and you knew it was over.

I liked the show. Maybe I have a simple mind, not to notice all of the inconsistencies in the writing, but it was entertaining.

javanut 09-25-03 07:40 AM

I'll try it again tonight. Here's teh summary from tV guide:

September 25: Veteran's Day: A crystal-meth lab in rural Utah that's run by a former Delta Force combatant is the key to a terrorist bombing plot targeting the Veterans Day parade route in D.C. Complicating the case: a meth-using DEA agent with an old tie to a Matrix team member.

veloce 09-25-03 08:51 AM

MI-5 is much better than Threat Matrix and 24, but the best part of MI-5 is how it gets more and more compelling as you get to know the characters. Threat Matrix might deliver that, but none of the characters really made much of an impression on me (and the Agency never went that route either).

But hey, it's better than Whoopi!

I'll just stick with MI-5 (and Alias) for my spytertainment shows, thanks.
