Most EMOTIONAL Moment in TV History ?

has to be NON News and NON Sport, looking mainly at TV Shows

I thought Ellen comin out was pretty emotional

for me and this will mean nothing to all of you yanks, it was when Den Watts died in Eastenders, an english soap

recently the last episode of Buffy made me cry

I don't reckon too often, but if I were to reckon, I'd reckon the most emotional moment for <I>me</I> was probably the first time I saw 'Sleeping in Light'.

Of course, this doesn't include real stuff like the moon landing or reality-inspired events like Jon Stewart's speech after 9/11.

P.S. A <I>very, VERY</I> close second would be:

Bette Midler singing to Johnny Carson on his next to last Tonight SHow.

I thought the last M*A*S*H was pretty emotional.

As huge of a nerd as I am, I have two moments:

1) I seem to recall a Muppet Show episode where Gonzo was upset about something or other (Linda Rondstat might have been the guest). He's packed his bags and we get to see the rarely used backstage of the theater. Then either he sings a song or Kermit comes out and they both sing something and Kermit eventually talks him into staying. Very emotional for a kid.

2) For some reason I cried during the Happy Days reunion special back in the early 90's. They had a bunch of clips and when they showed the one where Fonzie read Richie's note taped on the door I sobbed.

I a geek.

On M*A*S*H when .

Two of you beat me to it:

The MASH episode when Radar reports the unexpected fate of Henry Blake (the behind the scenes story of filming that scene, by the way, is awesome) and the final few minutes of the final episode, especially when Hawkeye's helicopter pulls away.

The Jon Stewart commentary was also a good one.

Geez, I can't think of anything else right now.

Babylon 5: "Severed Dreams"



I actually stood up and cheered. Best f***ing hour of Television for me.

How about TV movies about sports? Because nothing beats the original TV movie BRIAN'S SONG....

I too cheered at my TV. It's hard to remember a time when I was more pumped up by something that was happening in a TV show. What a character, and what a moment!

I wouldn't call it the most emotional, but another Babylon 5 moment that gives me chills is courtesy of Ms. Claudia Christian in "Between the Darknesss and the Light":

When Bobby Ewing died on Dallas (before we all knew it was a dream)...that was pretty emotional.

When Jimmy Smits died on NYPD Blue...that was really emotional too!

I'm too young to remember it when it first aired, but having seen the HBO documentary on it, the TV reports re: Munich games and the athletes from Israel must have been pretty powerful.


Didn't see Jon Stewart's post-9/11 speech, but how does it compare to Letterman's?

Spooky: Yeah.. when Bobby sees the son that was never born as he is dying, that really got to me.

But the one NYPD moment for me was when Andy Jr. was shot. Seeing Sipowicz descend into hell was just heartwrenching. But on that same note, seeing him hook up with Connie was terrific for me. The two were made for each other.

Most emotional moment of TV for me = toss up between the Radar line in M*A*S*H mentioned above and the first shot of the Enterprise in the opening credits of TNG's "Encounter at Farpoint" (simply because Star Trek had finally come back to TV).

Rogue: Oh God, that was the first time I had ever seen Letterman serious and emotional. But he meant every last word... he is a New Yorker, just like Stewart. But what really got to me was when Dan Rather was on, and he broke down. This was a journalist who was not afraid to show his love for his country. I can't belive that he got criticized for that.

Bandoman: re: B5.. you're in for the ride of your life. As for Star Trek TNG, the one episode that stands for me is Picards torture by the Cardassians. Jean-Luc was this close to giving in...

On the Letterman/Stewart thing, taking <I>nothing</I> away from Letterman's classy and powerful return to the air (and I still get chills when I think of the Dan Rather interview), something about Stewart's monologue was so raw and emotional that it was at another level for me.

I saw the original broadcast (wish I'd taped it), but I don't recall Rather getting criticized for breaking down on Letterman.

But, I think he [and other journalists] were "Jeered" by TV Guide. In essence, I think they felt reporters should REPORT the news and not REACT to it. Again, I think it was TV Guide. But, I DO remember reading at least one negative thing about his appearance.

Of course, on the other hand, I remember a lot of people/press/media making a big deal about his break down. Not that he did it, but that reporters are human too.

How is it possible that nobody's mentioned "The Body"? Of course, I haven't watched Babylon 5 yet, so I'm not familiar with most of the moments listed so far.

"The Gift" (Season 5 finale of Buffy)

The last 5 minutes of the episode had me in tears. It was if as I just lost a close friend.

Even the reruns of the episode on FX still get to me.
