WB's Boarding House: North Shore 06/18/03

{from TV Guide Online)

Debut: Prolific producer Mark Burnett rides in the wake of “Blue Crush” and MTV's Surf Girls with a “lifestyle-reality series” focusing on seven pro surfers.

Filmed during last year's Vans Triple Crown of Surfing in Oahu, Hawaii, the six-part series is The Real World meets “The Endless Summer,” as cameras follow the dudes and dudettes as they hit the waves---and the party scene. The cast features five-time Triple Crown winner Sunny Garcia, reigning champ Myles Padaca and International Women's Surfing cofounder Holly Beck, along with Damien Hobgood, Danny Fuller, Chelsea Georgeson and surfwear model Veronica Kay. In the opener, Myles and Sunny compete to move on to the semifinals of the first event.

So did anyone else happen to catch this? I thought it was pretty sweet, especially considering they were able to get Sunny Garcia to do the show. He makes watching it worthwhile on his own. (At least to a flat-lander anyway.) I thought it was much better than a lot of reality crap put out there, since they were able to land actual professionals all w/ a common goal.

Hopefully it makes non-locals/visitors stop acting like asses when they get to the islands. Don't **** with the kama'aina, respect them.

It wasn't any of the three on the show, just a local girl who happened to be at that particular spot.

I totall forgot to set my Replay to record this. Fortunately, the premiere is being rebroadcast on Sunday night.

I have seen disrespectful tourists all over the world, is this just an already rampant problem in the islands or something?

But I know what you are saying, people - whether they are tourists or not - need to be more respectful of others in general - whether they are kama'aina or not.

In the previews for this show, I saw a clip of two surfers looking out at the ocean, and one guy just reaches out and cracks the other guy across the mouth. I didn't catch this scene in the show last night. Did I miss it, or is it a scene from a later episode?

I fell asleep right before this show came on so I missed it. Good thing WB will probably play it Sunday.

It must be from an upcoming episode, because Sunny Garcia didn't do it in the first episode.

Well, there isn't much love towards tourists to begin with in Hawai'i. Funny, isn't it? Since it's their main source of income. I had to watch over my fellow seniors during their grad trip to Hawai'i. I'm orig. from there and know the tendencies of the locals. Can't tell you how many fights I had to avert. There used to be an old tradition of "Kill A Haole day" where the kids would take their Senior ditch day to mug, beat up, you name it, to a tourist in Waikiki. Haole means non-Hawai'ian (foreigner).

It doesn't seem intelligent to ***** in the hand that feeds you. I can sort of see how they can get frustrated w/ tourists, but still...

Yeah, I don't get it either but the animosity is there.

fujishig 06-19-03 02:01 PM

What's interesting is that all the animosity is against "haole" people, which has come to mean "white" even though it really means "foreigner". And considering the very small percentage of 100% Hawaiian people that are left, isn't nearly everyone haole? But I digress...

I only caught the very end of the episode, and in the preview for the next one they showed that punch. I guess I'll catch in on Sunday... I didn't realize that it would be in Hawaii and have pros in it.

Sessa17 06-19-03 02:38 PM

I'm got scared b.c this is the first reality show (aside from I'm w/ Busy the night before), that I ever sat down & watched. And it frightened me b/c I kind of liked it. But it was almost totally b/c of Sunny. He is a very real & engaging person, reminds me a lot of my dad.

But except for Heidi (I think that's her name, the girl that takes everything serious, she is alos very hot) I cannot stand the rest of the cast. Maybe it's b/c I'm from Jersey & I just don't get it (my girlfriend surfs though), the girls & the one burnout dude drive me nuts. How many times can they say "radical", "rad", I didn't even know people still said that. I just can't stand people that act like they don't have a care in the world.

Well, the term nowdays really describes non-Hawaiians (those who aren't born and raised in Hawai'i and isn't reflected at the ethnic and native Hawai'ians still remaining.)

fujishig 06-20-03 08:49 AM

Ah, but you could be born and raised in Hawaii, and white, and still be called "haole"

Anyway, anyone else have any opinions on the show? I'll probably catch the repeat on Sunday, just to see Hawaii again... and Sessa17, you won't like the majority of people in Hawaii, then. We're all laid back... :)

Oh, not at all, I've been to Hawaii, I was probably an annoying tourist, but I loved everyone I met. I never said I don't like people that are laid back, I just don't like people that act like they don't have a care in the world. There is a huge difference. The two kids on the show that say "rad" every other word & just care about partying & then surfing second. That mentality is what annoys me.
