ESPN to produce weekly drama series

Continuing its foray into scripted programming, ESPN has begun production on its first weekly drama series.

"Playmakers," set in the world of professional football, is scheduled to premiere in August. Production got under way this week in Toronto (presumably using American football rules, however).

The 11-episode series, produced by ESPN Original Entertainment -- the unit that's produced the network's two original movies and shows like "Pardon the Interruption" -- follows the on- and off-field lives of players, coaches and management of a fictional football team. Tony Denison ("Crime Story") stars as the team's coach.

Also in the cast are Omar Gooding ("Baby Boy" ), Jason Matthew Smith, Russell Hornsby ("Haunted"), Chris Wiehl ("CSI" ) and Marcello Thedford ("ER").

"Playmakers" was created by John Eisendrath, a writer and producer on "Alias" and a former college football player. He and Orly Adelson (ESPN's "The Junction Boys" ) are the executive producers.

The show will premiere at 9 p.m. ET Tuesday, Aug. 26, about a week before the start of the NFL season.

And mine.....how soon before we have to get Digital Cable and ESPN 12 to actually watch sports.

ESPN is also working on a Today type show for next fall.

I liked it better the first time I saw it, when it was called "Dream Team," and it was about a mid-level English soccer club.

I find myself watching less and less ESPN. And if not for carrying games I couldn't otherwise see, I doubt I'd be watching at all.

My thought exactly the first time I saw this. At least that show manages to include real teams and players. I'm sure this show will have a fictional league and fictional opponents.

Actually I remember the first time they did this when it was called 1st and Ten. And it starred OJ Simpson.
