TNN becoming Spike TV? Not so fast, says a suing Spike Lee
By Wade Keller, Torch editor

Filmmaker Spike Lee filed a lawsuit against TNN parent company Viacom attempting to stop the channel's namechange to Spike TV in two weeks, according to an Associated Press story.

Spike Lee says: "The media description of this change of name, as well as comments made to me and my wife, confirmed what was obvious - that Spike TV referred to Spike Lee."

Viacom counters: "(We are) confident that the court will reject any legal claims my Mr. Lee to the popular word and name Spike."

Sen. Bill Bradley and actors Ed Norton and Ossie Davis signed affidavits saying when they heard of Spike TV, they thought Spike Lee was associated with the network in some way.

TNN is the home network of WWE Raw.

If this is true... Lee's become insane with himself.

From IMDb:

Director Spike Lee has filed suit against Viacom over its plans to rename the TNN cable network Spike TV. In court documents filed Tuesday in New York, Lee asked for an injunction to prevent the name change from occurring. "I was extremely upset to see my name connected with a network when I had never given my consent to use my name," Lee said. Calling attention to the reasons Viacom officials presented for renaming the network ["It's unapologetically male; it's active; it's smart and contemporary with a personality that's aggressive and irreverent"], Lee said that those were all qualities "that the public, through media publications, had come to associate with me."
Um sorry Spike Lee but........no

This is SOOOOOOOOO pathetic I can hardly stand it. Excellent use of our legal system and resources...

ChrisHicks 06-04-03 03:55 PM

so when he wins his case what will the new name be?

bboisvert 06-04-03 03:58 PM

Wow, I didn't think it was possible for me to hate that guy any more than I already do. I guess I was wrong.

Morf 06-04-03 04:15 PM

I was at a party where this guy said he was going to spike the punch, and all of a sudden Spike Lee crashed through the window and threatened to sue. True story.

hotaru_san 06-04-03 04:22 PM

Not only is mr. lee sueing, I hear a certain vampire, an anime character and a lot of owners of dogs named spike will be knocking on Viacom's door.. TAKE THAT BIG COMPANY!!

-rolleyes- this guy thinks so highly of himself.

adamblast 06-04-03 05:05 PM

I was expecting their logo to look something like a dog collar with spikes on it.

Now I hope it looks like a short guy with a goatee, just to tick him off... :D

With first name like Shelton I can see why he prefers to be called Spike. When I see the name Spike Lee, I think arrogant, over-rated, racist, troll. Certainly not the positve adjectives listed in the story.

ClarkKentKY 06-04-03 08:04 PM

Wow, Three affidavits signed by his friends. rotfl

What an idiot.

Jason1973 06-04-03 08:05 PM

Yeah, the first thing I think of when I hear the word spike, is booze, and then volleyball, and then punk hairdo's and then Spike from Buffy the vampire slayer, and then..... Spike Lee is waaaay down the list...

resinrats 06-04-03 08:09 PM

"The Network for people who hate Oxygen/Lifetime"

From this story, I gather that Spike Lee has a huge ego and thinks that his name is bigger than it really is. Why would a network actually WANT to name themselves after him?

Bang!

ClarkKentKY 06-04-03 09:36 PM

I think they should call it "Stupid"

I think that says GUY more than Spike... Spike just sounds like it came from some network thinktank.

"Hey what are you watching?"

"Stupid"

"Oh what's on?"

"Bunch of Stupid S***. Star trek reruns, then Wrestling, then a couple of worthless cartoons, and then a show where asians hurt themselves and laugh."

:) *Patent Pending*

What about Spike Jonze?

Jason 06-05-03 08:03 AM

FWIW, I saw the Spike TV logo before I saw any of these news stories, and I did not think of Spike Lee at all.

C Roberts 06-05-03 09:03 AM

I wonder if they called it "X TV" if he'd have sued claiming they were ripping off his Malcolm X movie. LOL

GuessWho 06-05-03 09:04 AM

This Spike is also building a lawsuit

Hmm.. the network for men used to the The Nashville Network..

ChrisHicks 06-05-03 10:04 AM

Maybe he'll sue Fox next since they did have The "X" - Files.
