Out of Order 6/1/03

It's off to a good start. This almost 2 hour season premiere had some serious comedic moments, and some comical dramatic moments with nary a transition scene. It's pretty amazing how much ground it covered in 100 minutes or so. I'll be tuning in for the rest of it.

FYI, if you missed it, you can catch it again tonight on Showtime at 10 p.m. EDT.

It's pretty interesting, though it does crib alot of scenes from different (but very distinct) films.

I thought it was pretty good. I liked the storytelling style it used. The premiere seemed kind of like its own movie in itself, so it will be interesting to see where they take it from here.

I watched the first half of this last night before I got pulled away.

I'll be tuning in tonight to finish it off.

Enjoyed it enough so that I'll continue with it, but at this point it hardly ranks up there with Six Feet Under, Sopranos, etc..

Spoilers below:

For some reason, I keep thinking Eric Stoltz is younger than he is (i.e. mid-30s when he's now over 41). Must be that high pitched voice of his.

Kim Dickens was like the only good thing in Hollow Man, so it was a treat to see her on this show.

Felicity Huffman seems too old for Stoltz (but too young for her real life hubby, William H. Macy, who's also good in this premiere).

I was busting a gut when Justine Bateman's character offered to tie Mark's (Stoltz's) shoe in Mark's kitchen, and Mark holding the bottle in that position was slyly intentional and indicative of the undercurrent of the scene.

And, the masturbation-interruptus scene was played for good laughs.

Wow!

This was a great series premiere (or movie) with my favorite, Felicity Huffman.

Edgy and sometimes over-the-top writing are what did it for me.

A nice supporting cast with William H. Macy and Justine Bateman (".

Can't wait for the next episode but I was sad to find out that this is just a 5-episode mini-series thing for Showtime.

I thought it was going to be a regular weekly show like the others.

When did Justine get those boobies? I think I'll just refer to them as her Mallories.

I finally got a chance to watch this, I thought it was excellent. I hope we see more of the Peter Bogdanovich character.

I think the characters are written very well, especially Stoltz. You really could understand he loved his wife yet you could empathize with his desire to stray from the marriage. So he didn't come across as a complete jerk, a la "The Mind of the Married Man".

Patman, if you like Kim Dickens, I highly recommend you check out Allison Anders' fine film "Things Behind the Sun" starring Dickens, Don Cheadle, and Eric Stotlz. It premiered on Showtime in 2001 (it skipped a theatrical release but it got great reviews at Sundance.)

Is that film on DVD, or just shown on Showtime from time to time?

It finally came out on DVD about a month ago. It is "full frame" but that's how it aired on Showtime so I still recommend it.

It has lots of great special features as well (commentary, auditions, etc.)

They didn't seem as large in the second episode.

6/23/03's episode:

Okay, in the home stretch. Mark gets cold feet about breaking off his relationship with Lorna, all the while his lover Danni is leaving her hubby and is yearning for Mark to do the same. I guess there is some sort of self-psycho analysis breakthru when Mark figures out the adult meaning of his dreams, and what he wants, and can't have, and it's not Danni.

Anyone know if that's a fictional actress (whose name kept being bleeped out) that Mark and Peter Bogdonovich's character were discussing (as being not sexy at all).

Enjoyed Justine Bateman's dare.

These past few episode are lacking the zip of the initial installment, but it'd be pretty tough to maintain that level of quirkiness and go where they've been so far.

Only one episode left for this "mini-season".

could someone please tell me the name of the ep. that played last night? I noticed it was on Show2 tonight and was going to watch it, but I might just try to find out when this show starts over in repeats.

It was something like "Follow the Rat" (it had "rat" in the title).
