Without a Trace - 2-part season finale 5/8 & 5/15

Surprised that there wasn't a thread for this already.

Another solid episode. I wonder which hostage got shot.

movieking 05-09-03 08:34 AM

I was wondering when someone would start a thread. I was too lazy for it.

Anyway, good episode. I don't know if anyone got shot. The gun went off in the struggle, so it could have been an errant shot, or it could have hit the two guys struggling, or Sam, since she was going that way.

Did you see Martin's reaction when Jack was talking to his boss about his relationship with Sam? Seems like he finally figured out that they had bee together.

I have said it before, and I say it again now, this and Alias are the two best shows on TV now (Buffy and 24 have moved down my list after sub par seasons).

Goldberg74 05-09-03 08:45 AM

Tom Irwin as Barry Washburn was pretty cool... I remember him vividly from MSCL. The excahnge between him and Anthony Lapaglia made it seem like they were in the same room, not acting into a phone.

... and why in the heck didn't Sam disarm him as she came out of the bathroom? Isn't she a well-trained FBI agent?

I wondered that as well - she had him away from the rest - a perfect time.

movieking 05-09-03 09:54 AM

He still had the gun, so maybe she didn't want to chance it.

I watched the last half of this last night - and it was very well done. I think I will have make more of an effort to watch this show next season.

Oh yeah - Poppy is pretty. Did anyone see her on Jimmy Kimmel Wednesday night? Damn, she looked good.

MrX 05-09-03 11:36 AM

I thought it was good. A change of pace from them chasing down a missing person and they did it well.

Goldberg74 05-09-03 04:04 PM

... but MrX, they still need to find the missing person once they resolve the hostage situation.

But I do agree about the missing person taking the back seat for awhile.

That's true. I keep forgetting about that.

movieking 05-11-03 08:24 PM

Spoiler for the next show. Don't read it if you don't want to know!

Spoiler:
Stupid local TV guide! I was reading through it when I read that Samantha was actually shot, and they have to figure out a way to get her out. It is not written in stone, but it probably right

Patman 05-12-03 08:52 AM

I kept hoping Sam would use some Sydney Bristow moves and kick that dude into the stone age, but I do realize she couldn't risk the lives of anyone in that situation if the gun went off and killed one of the hostages.

mapson 05-14-03 11:20 PM

I particularly liked the code Sam used on the phone to give specific information.

movieking 05-15-03 10:00 PM

Great show. Anyone know who performed the song at the end? I know that it was Rufus Wainwright that did it in Shrek, but I didn't recognize this version.

B.A. 05-16-03 04:36 AM

Dammit - I actually went to bed a 9 pm and forgot to watch this. I taped E.R. instead, even though I wanted to see this finale more than that one. So stupid...anyway, would someone please give a recap? Thank you.

what was the title of the song? Love how this show uses music to wrap things up a few times a year, much like The Shield.

Denethor 05-16-03 09:15 AM

Just happened to turn to CBS last night after watching "Lantana" which stars Anthony LaPaglia (great movie) and caught the last few minutes of this show. I'm pretty sure the song was "Hallelujah" by the late Jeff Buckley off of his Grace album.

Goldberg74 05-16-03 10:06 AM

Great end to a solid first season.

... I would have liked to have Jack's wife jump out of her skin when she wakes up in the morning and sees Jack sitting there all dishevled.

;)

Red Dog 05-16-03 10:41 AM

I couldn't believe that he was eligible to receive $687K from the 9-11 victim's fund. $687K x 3000 dead = over $2B in the victim's fund. Did the victim's fund really raise $2B?

B.A. 05-16-03 10:43 AM

This is killing me - would one of kind people tell me what happened. Please.

Sam was shot in the left leg (lower thigh), but Barry wouldn't let her go or let anyone come in.

Finally, Jack talked talked him to exchanging medical supplies for a hostage. So Barry let Richard (called him "The Dick") they guy who went for the gun in the first place.

They got Sam comfortable for the most part.

Switch to Vivian at the grandmother's home where we meet Barry's kids. The daughter still loves her dad, but the son is indifferent.

Danny uncovers where the email was sent from and that another was recieved a few minutes later (after the ransome note was sent), it simply said 'Call me. ASAP.'

The email came from an accountant/attorney. Appearantly Barry was offered a check from the 9/11 victims fund for $687K, but didn't take it. The guy needed to set up another meeting so he could sign the papers and get the check.

Jump back to the bookstore where Jack walks up to the bookstore and demands to exchange places with Sam. He walks in uncontested, picks up Sam and sets her on a bench outside, and returns to the bookstore.

Barry wants to talk to his kids, and calls his mother-in-law. Vivian answers the phone and says taht he can't. He threatens Jack, and says let me talk to the kids or the (black) lady hostage gets it...

Jacks says to let the three remaining hostages go and he can talk to his kids. Barry says, two can go now, and the third one can leave after he talks to his kids.

His daughter talks to him, but his son tells him to "Go to hell".

Barry lets then lets the secretary go. She turns around and tells Barry that she is sorry for what happened to his wife.

They get hungry, so they ask for a pizza.

Now its just Jack and Barry.

Jack tries to talk him out of it, but Barry is unrelenting. So they start talking about family.

Jack talks about his girls and his wife and how they are seperated (for 9 mos). Barry asks him what went wrong. Jack replies that work and the kids got in the way.

Barry then talks about how his last moments with his wife that morning was nothing special, and how much he regretted that. He them accused Jack of not being with his wife becuase he 'couldn't love her enough' , when Barry will never get the chance to. and Sam gets in their somewhere, but I don't remember how. They get into an arguement and Barry sticks the pistol in Jack's forehead and pulls back the hammer.

He uncocks the gun and sits down.

Skip around a bit from the other archs, they find Barry's van by a subway exit, but no one is in it.

Then come back to the bookstore. This is the first time that Barry gets suicidal, he points the gun to his head as Jack tries to get out of him the location of the kidnapped victim.

Finally Barry cracks, Jack calmly takes the gun away from him and he finds out that she is in his storage unit.

Barry surrenders. Martin finds the missing lady safe and sound.

Its day break, Jack then walks back to his house. He goes inside, tucks in his daughters and then goes into his bedroom sits in a chair next to his sleeping wife and watches her. You can tell he's really thinking things through.

He sees a picture of the Trade Center Towers on the wall and then looks out the window towards where they were.

Fade to black.

Seasons over.

--- thanks to djbrown for the correction.

They get hungry, so they trade the scretary for a pizza.

actually, he allowed two to go before he talked to the kids, and agreed to let one go (the secretary) after IIRC. He let the secretary go, leaving just Jack and Barry. The pizza came in cause they were hungry I believe, not in any sort of trade.

Not that any of this makes a difference in the long run.

Other than that, nice recap.

That's what I was thinking when he sat sown in the chair by her bedside:lol:

I thought it was a great episode. The scenes with just JAck and Barry when they were by themselves were well done.

movieking 05-17-03 06:01 PM

Before watching this episode, I saw a rerun of Frasier with LaPaglia as Daphne's brother. It is amazing how he played both roles so well since they are almost at the opposite end of the spectre.

Lantana was a good movie as well.
