MORE SNL cast members are LEAVING...

First, Tracy Morgan's leaving to do a TV series.

Then, Jimmy Fallon is rumored to be leaving after this season (see this week's PEOPLE magazine).

Now, Chris Kattan has officially resigned to Lorne Michaels earler this week.

SO NOW, we have such SNL powerhouses as Dean Edwards, Jeff Richards, and Fred Armisen to carry on the tradition of Belushi, Eddie Murphy, and Phil Hartman.
Yeah, right.

Flynn 05-08-03 11:44 AM

This show has not been funny for a long time in my opinion. I like Jimmy Fallon, and I wonder what else he plans to do. I could care less about Chris Kattan...

das Monkey 05-08-03 11:46 AM

Fine with me. Fallon's been phoning it in all year, Kattan can only play annoying characters and that got tiresome years ago, and Tracy Morgan, while HIHLAYRIOUS!!!, is a one-trick pony who rarely gets any screen time. Of the three, I'll miss Tracy the most, but it's not like he gets to be in many sketches. I'm tired of Fallon and Kattan. Let's see what newcomers like Armisen and Forte can do as full cast members. The show is in a complete rut. Time to shake **** up.

I still haven't figured out how Jimmy Fallon (well, maybe he made a deal with the devil) got to kiss Natalie Portman...

movieking 05-08-03 12:20 PM

Jimmy Fallon went from being one of my favorites on the show to being the cast member that I hate the most (with Kattan being a close second). I can't remember the last sketch that he was able to do straight-faced. Get some new blood in there.

I will miss Tracy Morgan however...

NCMojo 05-08-03 12:20 PM

Could not agree with das more. Time to shake up the cast and bring in new blood.

The most fearsome line to an SNL cast member?

"I hear Lorne Michaels is planning a barbeque..."

Josh-da-man 05-08-03 12:27 PM

Like rats off of a sinking ship.

B.A. 05-08-03 12:29 PM

Good news in regards to those three - there isn't anything new that they can bring to show. I wish Tina Fey was on the list, I have been hoping for her departure all season.

This is good news for Dean Edwards and Will Forte - they definitely deserve more showtime. They need more new blood among the men on the show badly. The women are in pretty good shape w/ Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler, though Rachel Dratsch is getting a little old...

Giles 05-08-03 01:38 PM

I think it was the most recent issue of Entertainment Weekly that was saying that Tracy Morgan is getting labeled as the "token black guy" and as a result his talent is wasted and underused.

big whoppa 05-08-03 02:02 PM

None of the new people do it for me. The gal who Donatella Versace can be funny at times but she can't carry the show. I like Kattan. His gay characters usually crack me up. Tracey is more of a "hee hee" than a "ha ha." Fallon is good with the news and his computer guy, the computer dorm, and his home videos with his "girlfriend."

AXP 103 05-08-03 02:14 PM

I would second Das's motion of new blood being needed, that said I would contend that the show does have a few players to build around. Amy Poehler has talent, Dean Edwards always gives me the impression that he could be funny given some air time, and Maya Rudolph is no slouch. Some of the cast members are rough, or downright unfunny, but I don't think there was ever a time that the show has featured a flawless cast.

The last time the show went though a major overhaul was around 1994/95, and it was better off for it. Now is as good a time as any to do it again.

calhoun07 05-08-03 02:14 PM

The only reason I have watched the show at all this season is for Maya Rudolph. The rest of the cast can stay or go, I don't care.

movieking 05-08-03 03:41 PM

I agree about Maya Rudolph. I think that she could easily carry most of the show by herself. Chris Parnell and Darrell Hammond are great as well (I like Amy Poehler as well), but pretty much everyone else is expendable, IMO (I am probably forgetting a few other talented people, but overall most of them are unimpressive)

Charlie Goose 05-08-03 04:41 PM

As has been proven time and time again, the show will survive the loss of the veteran cast members. Regardless of who leaves, there will always be someone to take their place.

They want to shake the place up? Forget about replacing the cast. They're all very good considering the material. Hire a new crop of writers.

Samuel 05-08-03 05:09 PM

Good news about Tracy Chapman, SNL seems to restrictive for him.

cineman 05-08-03 05:10 PM

Seems like a good time to bring back Joe Piscopo.

Well, she's got a fast car but her daddy's an alcoholic.

Tina Fey just signed on for 2 more years as head writer.

TheMadMonk 05-08-03 05:46 PM

Well, if Kattan is finally gone, then I consider this good news.

big whoppa 05-08-03 06:19 PM

Tracy Chapman! :D

He can't help it if they all look the same!

But did you see the kicker: at $2M per year.....

Rogue588 05-08-03 07:35 PM

..please let Jeff Richards be the fourth..please let Jeff Richards be the fourth..

as for Dean Edwards & Fred Armisen..well, i've liked Armisen so far..who's this Dean Edwards person..?

TheMadMonk 05-08-03 08:03 PM

I agree... Armisen has shown a good deal of potential. I expect he will be upgraded to "full cast member" next season. Seth Myers, too.

Dean Edwards is... well, the other black guy. He and Jeff Richards are both expendable (which means they'll be on the show for another 10 years.)

Darrell Hammond is hardly ever on anymore, either.

Jobronie 05-08-03 08:21 PM

Waste Jeff Richards.

Give Fred Armisen MORE to do; huge upside potential ("Aye Dios mio!!!!"). He was the highlight of more than one show in the past few months.....

But that also includes her developing a sitcom for the network, which she may or may not star in.

And BTW, an NBC spokesman called the rumor about Fallon leaving a "piece of ****," and that he still has a year left on his contract.

An NBC spokesperson dismissed the suggestion that Fallon was quitting as a "pile of sh--" and said that he still has a year left on his contract.
