TV Idols who made the successful leap to Film

1. Johnny Depp From 21 Jump Street to matinee idol.

2. Molly Ringwald From The Facts of Life to John Hughes films. A little long in the tooth now, though. But it did happen for her.

3. Leonardo DiCaprio From Growing Pains to "King of the World!"

4. Mike Myers From Saturday Night Live to "Shall we shag now, or shall we shag later?"

#1 would have to be Tom Hanks

From Bossom Buddies to 2 time Oscar winner.

Technically, Hanks got his start in film. He Knows You're Alone (1980)

Disqualified.

Well, if we disqualify Tom Hanks for having a film career first, then we have to disqualify Jim Carrey for the same reason.

He was in all kinds of movies before In Living Color: Once Bitten, Earth Girls are Easy, Peggy Sue Got Married, etc.

Edit to add: he was in a very short-lived TV series called The Duck Factory before the above list, but still had a few movies under his belt by that time.

Tom Selleck

(This is kind of a ridiculous topic - I'm sure there a tons of these all of which could be argued ad naseum. More specific definition should have been stated in the beginning - e.g. definition of "idol"...)

Demi Moore.
Will Smith (UGH!)
David Caruso ( )
