Phil Rosenthal's column, 4/14

This is the TV columnist for the Chicago Sun Times (where Ebert & Roeper are also writers.)

Besides a feature article daily, Phil also writes "What are you looking at?" - a usually funny look at that night's notable programs.

Here's some of the funny ones from today's column, hope you like them. If so, maybe I (or someone else) can post daily. I'll edit out local programs for you non-Chicagoans

What are you looking at?
April 14, 2003
BY PHIL ROSENTHAL TELEVISION CRITIC

"Married by America" (7 p.m., WFLD-Channel 32): More like "Ignored by America." This little watched, arranged marriage series is winding down with a two-hour finale in which those few people who care will learn whether Jill and Kevin or Billie Jeanne and Tony will go through with this foolishness. What kind of moron puts their fate in the hands of the network behind "Man vs. Beast"?

"Yes, Dear" (7:30 p.m., WBBM-Channel 2): Kenny Rogers cameo warning!

"April 1865: The Month That Saved America" (8 p.m., History Channel): The Civil War ended, but so did Abraham Lincoln's life. (Repeated at midnight.)

"Late Show With David Letterman" (10:35 p.m., WBBM-Channel 2): Loved this bit last week: "Do you have a spare 40-foot statue of Saddam Hussein? The city of Baghdad needs a new one to replace the statue that was vandalized on Wednesday. Here's your chance to help rebuild a nation. Send your enormous iron Saddam statues to: Iraq Mission, 14 E. 49th St., New York, N.Y., 10021. Thanks for making a difference."

"The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" (10:35 p.m., WMAQ-Channel 5): Who says "The Tonight Show" isn't funny? They're putting on last fall's "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson and pretending people still care? They're putting on Julia Louis-Dreyfus and pretending people are eagerly awaiting the return of "Watching Ellie"? That's hilarious.

"Nightline" (10:35 p.m., WLS-Channel 7): Ted Koppel's back in Washington, safe and sound and in a suit.

I love "What are you looking at"

Still, I miss Camera Obscura...nothing wrong with an attractive young female writer obsessing over the last Skinemax skin flick.
